In this tutorial, I demonstrate how to compose your pedal artwork in GIMP, the free GNU Image Manipulation Program. I'm running GIMP 2.8.2 on Windows, but it also runs on Mac and Linux.
I start with an overview of my Under Pressure compressor and Speed Racer Overdrive artwork, and then show how to compose your own pedal artwork from scratch.
I cover the basics of project setup, layout, working with the rulers and guidelines, the graphics and text editing and selection tools, sourcing artwork and fonts, retouching and removing blemishes, extracting components from a larger image, layer compositing with masks, and more
In previous videos in this series on building guitar pedals, I demonstrated how to model the enclosure in Sketchup, drill and paint it.

You have no idea how helpful this series has been. This has been a true step by step. I'm hoping to have my pedal done by the end of the weekend. As this is my first DIY decoration, it won't be anything super, but it will be mine and it will be unique. Thank you so much for taking the time to document this process!

No problem. I had always shied away from Photoshop and GIMP because I missed that whole thing when it first came around and never really bothered to learn it. Every time I tried to mess with either it never made sense to me, and so I would just end up giving up. But your tutorial was SO clear and SO informative that it made it seem easy. I loved how you added all the little details like "I'm going to pan down here by holding the space bar as I move the mouse." Those little helpful hints were very appreciated. After viewing the video, I decided to install GIMP again and give it a try. And it was really easy. The best part of all is that your tutorial just happened to be dealing with the (relatively obscure) subject of designing a pedal enclosure, which is exactly what I'm doing! Thanks again! New subscriber for sure!

thanks a lot John . i was wondering on the border that you did at the. end im using a black pedal how can I make the border none black? i am all ready to print. Your video was very helpful although the new version of gimp is different . also as a noob it took me a long time . i have several issues with layers. and font. i tried to change font and when i click to type it reverts back to the oriinal font no matter what. try it keeps reverting to sans font. any suggestions? one last, question how can i change the background color to black its white and if i try moving the layers around everything gets jumbled?

edit: I left this comment before watching the video all the way through lol sorry about that!! great tutorials on your channel here, I've got my first kits on their way and I think I'll be revisiting your videos a lot during the design process! can you do a more in depth tutorial on how you edited the image for the speed racer drive? right now i'm thinking of drawing a design and then scanning it so that I can print it out instead of painting on the enclosure. interested in how you did the colour correction etc
