Using an iPad for Sticky Notes in my Desk Setup

Ғылым және технология

I like using sticky notes, but they need a modern upgrade. In this video I'll show you how I repurposed an old iPad, to create a digital sticky note system for my 2022 desk setup.

I don't use real sticky notes in my personal life (for the material waste that you bring up), but using digital sticky notes wouldn't work for me either -- it loses the spatial context from being able to place them in certain spots since it's limited to such a small (2D) screen. For a few years I used a program called Stickies (from Zhorn, IIRC), and it was a step forward just by having more screen reale state, but it also made your desktop pretty cluttered (not to mention the avoidance anxiety of going to my desktop because I didn't want to see to-do items - I got very good at opening programs via key commands so I wouldn't ever have to go to my desktop, lol). It's also just so much easier/more efficient to grab a physical object and move it in three-space that digitally will never quite capture. And the dopamine from finishing/quitting something and tossing the note feels so good. The "advantage" of digital items like this is being able to search, copy and paste, add links/pictures, archive, etc. But honestly, I feel like the limitations of physical notes are actually the greater benefit in this case. When I make a note at work, I keep it brief and to-the-point, whereas with digital notes I'll feel inclined to overload it with all of the info "because I can." Ironically, the ability to archive and search digital notes actually brings on a fear of loss - you're constantly reminding yourself "it's ok to do X action to this note, I can undo it / find it later / etc."; with physical notes, however, it's not something you ever think about, it's more like "if I lose this note then whatever, life moves on". Regarding archiving, I find myself categorizing and archiving so many notes that over a decade later I *never* reference again, and the few times I did I would have been just fine going by memory or Googling - having the note honestly didn't help much. I guess this video made me realize I'm physical-sticky-note pilled lol. Big Sticky didn't pay me off for this comment, but I'll take a free pad of sticky notes 😂

Every time I think “nah this one isn’t for me” you make a point where I’m like “but maybe.” I have a Azio Foqo pro. It has a knob to switch between usb and Bluetooth profiles. I can just picture myself using that knob more often for notes now in Zoom meetings or whatever. I can see me moving pieces of my to-do list. My only problem is that my iPad is potentially too big for this use case I think.

The ability to connect to multiple devices with one keyboard/mouse wirelessly is known as "multihost". Quite a few wireless mechanical logitech keyboards are able to multihost. They come in a variety where they might use one USB wireless adapter + 1 bluetooth connection, have three bluetooth connections, and some, 2 bluetooth connections. For those trying to split their wired equipment between multiple computers, it's just a KVM switch. But for tablets and phones, more often than not, you'll have a better time with a multihosting keyboard/mouse than using a docking station+KVM. It's probably worth noting that some android phones have a "Desktop mode" that activates once they are connected to a docking station with an HDMI out. This gives you an entire computer monitor that is dedicated to your android device, already sized correctly and not just a vertical bar in the center of the screen. Do what you like with this information and enjoy making your ideal setup!

"huh, weird" but thats not the end of it. because when i opened the article, do you know what was the last keyboard talked about? yep. the keyboard i was just about to image search. we live in a simulation folks.
