WFH BONUS CONTENT: The voice you hear during the "Macropad 101" infomercial was created when I trained an AI voice model on a certain kids commercial from the 1990s... The commercial? ZOOBOOKS! (hopefully some of you remember lol) However, what I didn't realize is that the AI model also included the sounds of wild animals, and if you listen closely you can still hear a bit of those screaming lions and tigers in the background of that part of the video. I know this is not relevant to the macropad featured in the video, but I had to tell somebody this story lol. This concludes my bonus content, thank you for watching this video. ❤

Hey, thanks for the tip! I wasn't able to get it cuz out of stock, but I think they're replacing it with this oned: XPPen Mini Keydial ACK05 Wireless Shortcut Keyboard! You should make a video on that one cuz your complaints were being met with the new one. Doesn't look cheap, Meshed black, better jogging dial from what I could see, rechargeable battery, 1 more button, so 10 buttons x4 I guess. Because of your video, I just bought it on Amazon, and definitely looks like a better product than the old one. You should check it out!

Why does it feel like the entire world has forgotten about rechargeable AAA/AA batteries? I personally greatly prefer them in devices such as game controllers over plug-in rechargeables but every time I've seen someone mention AA batteries in the past few years they time travel back to 1999 and their childhood gameboy.

I've noticed that too. All my user replaceable batteries are rechargeable and much prefer them to built in batteries some devices have. What is the point of having a wireless device when you have to keep them hooked to a wire all the time to keep them charged?

Having used AA/AAA with my camera gear since forever and carrying/charging 24-36AA to every shoot, I personally loath it. I'd much rather have something that I can plug in to charge and probably still use while it's charging, especially if I can keep it charged till I need to use it/travel. It beats having to carry spare batteries and a bulky charger vs just a few cords and a wall wort. Of course user replaceable lithiums are king, but ultimately I'd still rather have something I can just plug in and top off every night/throughout the day than juggle a bunch of battery sets and a bulky charging station. Especially so while traveling.

Exactly, this is my feeling as well when people complain about devices having AA/AAA batteries. Especially because AA/AAA batteries are a standard and we can very conveniently extend the lifetime of a device when the rechargeable battery dies because we just need to get a new one. The devices which come with the lithium rechargeable batteries simply die after their battery has gone bad and can't retain the charge anymore and there is nothing we can do about it (unless the company offers a battery replacement which is unlikely for niche products or find a similarly sized battery and try to adapt it for the device which in itself can be a safety hazard).

@@EddieBarksdale The problem is, most electronic device manufacturers nowadays make their integrated batteries NOT REPLACEABLE. So if your battery gets weaker after 2-3 years, you have to send your otherwise still perfecty working device to repair, or buy a new device.

As someone who has been switching to Linux, software being open-source usually means it also runs on all platforms. So, while this device sounds great and all, it does suck that the software is proprietary. However, since it wasn't mentioned in the video, they do support Linux, and actually include a wide range of ways to install it, including Deb packages, RPM packages, and even just the end product.

Yep, "What about Linux" was my first thought :D /edit: Meanwhile i bought it and i think on linux it still is not ideal. I wanted to add bash commands to the keys, but it seems this does not work pretty good as it sends the single keys. And this produces onforseeable results, probably depending on the delay of the remote server. e.g. a Shift + ; (geman key layout) Should result in a ";" but often i just get a "," because the Shift is probably taken too early or too late.

I have used about 4 macropads, this was the first macropad I bought about 3 years ago, I changed it for one from Huion that has more buttons. The macropads that I like the most are the ones related to artist and it is because its software makes it quite easy to configure and very versatile. In fact there is a new version of this model that looks much better and you can create 4 different profiles per software, it's like 5 dollars more expensive so it's definitely worth more than this version which is quite old. Also Wacom and Xenlabs have macropads, they are a bit more expensive and the design doesn't appeal to me but there they are if anyone wants to look.

Google linked to some ads for the ACK05 as well as the Ac19 when I searched, and I ended up buying a used one off Amazon. The deciding factor was that it supports Linux as well as Windows and Mac. I realize it's not a requirement for many, but for those who it is, it helps. In any case, for others searching, it looks like Mercari (retail service?) doesn't honor user specified cookie limitations. (Forces advertising cookies on you. Maybe that will change, but no option visible to disable that.) Up to others to decide if that is a deal breaker or not given that they have it up for $15 with $6.99 shipping, so $22 as a deal. Not for me. Ali Express has the Ack95 for $32, but you're buying from China, unless the seller on that service has staged shipping in the US, expect it to be 3-5 weeks before it shows up. The Google results showed the Amazon offer at $35, but once there it was $44.95 for used, or $49.99 for new. Pretty sure that the last time Google sampled the site, there was a seller who had some for $35 used, but they sold out. Now to wait for Friday to see if it's going to be useful for me.

Printed custom keyboard labels on sticker paper and have been using the device a wireless handheld cheaper StreamDeck. The software meets my needs great and was able to map the buttons to F13-F22 (and map those to OBS features) and the wheel as my volume control. Fits great in phone holders too. For the price and battery life, it's a big winner. Sucks it was discontinued, but can be found cheap on some old-stock retailers

For example windows + shift + arrow keys will switch the currently active window to another monitor and windows + arrow keys will resize a window to take half of either side of the screen or to maximize it

Great video on this macropad! I've been using the AC19 pretty much daily for a couple of years now, both on my desk and I've traveled with it to use with my laptop. I know the build quality is a common gripe about this device, but I have a Logitech wireless keyboard that has much worse build quality than the AC19 and that's from a really well known brand. When I travel with the AC19, I just put it in a small, soft fabric pouch and put it in a relatively safe spot in my bag and it's held up perfectly well. Take care of it and it'll take care of you too 😺👍 Oh also, I use rechargeable AAA batteries in mine and I think they last like 3-4 months or so, which is pretty fantastic, imo.

You can and should use rechargeable AA/AAA batteries. These pads sound cool but as a developer, tools like reshaper mean you’ve really just need to learn the key combos because there are so many useful ones, a pad with 9 keys feels so restrictive it’s pointless. Be interesting to give it a go to see if it sped me up a bit, so cheap.

Really informative video, genuinely thinking of picking one of these up, but I have to say, not having price be part one of the segments when it comes to scoring is a little bit ridiculous. Don't get me wrong there will be Macro pads that will be amazing, and others will suck no matter the cost, but if you compared the AC19 to the newest Stream Deck for example, it's going to get mostly blown out of the water on raw specs, but in terms of price to performance the AC19 is an amazing deal! So I just wanted to comment to say, please, in future, make this it's own segment. If the worry was more to do with a fluctuating price, I think just a "At $x.xx this is a Good deal" would be more than suitable!

I sold my 15 button streamdeck to get the ACK05. It makes my life a bit more easier, as elgato does not support linux. I was using an open source SW (streamdeck UI) for linux and streamdeck's native one for Windows. But everytime I switch between PCs, I have to unplug/plug to other one and also the extra cabling is just annoying to see on desk. Now my work is streamlined as ACK05 has native windows and linux support (Yes, mac too) and is wireless with a clean look on my desk. 10 buttons instead of 15 buttons is a tradeoff, but I never used more than 7-8 buttons in a page per application. In that case, ACK05 is evern more useful with the profiles as I dont even have to move around pages (like streamdeck).

The Amazon link takes one to the XPPen ACK05; the AC19 does not seem to be available.

You can get rechargeable AAAs. I'd much rather that than a built in non-user replaceable battery that will make the device e-waste within a couple of years. I'd love to see companies bring back AAAs and AAs for all this kind of stuff!

I just got it. Same software, a bit more pocketable, bluetooth support, and a rechargable "300 hour" battery charged over usb-c, I'd say worth it.

Seems the AC19 is no longer available - they've replaced it with the more expensive ($50) ACK05, wondering what your thoughts are on that one

If only as a 360 Link remote, it would be useful. And with a price like that, it's a no-brainer.

Is it no longer available? A search on Amazon and their website shows what looks like a newer updated model.

I replaced a macro pad with a custom floating menu in Better Touch Tool. Just assign a global hotkey and then you have a virtual macro pad on the screen with a click.

Do the macros save to the device itself? Can you program it on a different device and connect it to another to use it. Or do you always need the software running on the machine you are working on? I have an off network machine I use for setting up my other macro pads as I cant run software like this on my on network devices due to work security policies.
