if i want to build a dedicated game server that have ability to host at least 1000 game match, what will it cost and what type of mb or cpu i need?

sometimes as a backup just in case the GPU fails, you have a failsafe to go back to keep working until your GPU is fixed, most people use their computers more than just for gaming so having a backup is a must. Some applications also make use of the integrated GPUs to accelarate some works without using the primary GPU if you need the performance of the primary GPU for something else. But primarily I would say it is because most Intel CPUs come with it out of the box so people just wing it without a thought

ok, e5 1650v3/v4 for easier workloads and gaming, e5 2670/2690/2697 v3/v4 for much higher workloads and gaming. the e5 26xx processors can be used in a dual x99 setup, like the hp z620 if you wanna just go ahead and buy one of those, generally for a $200 price point for a dual cpu setup. you'll be looking for the lga2011-3 socket as the v4 chips will also fit that socket. that's pretty much it guys

I got an X99 Motherboard cpu combo from ali express for 50 bucks E5-2650 v4, paired it with a Xfx 5700 xt and 32 gb of ddr4 ram.. runnin at 2133mhz sadly.. but i'm from the 90's so all this is still fast compared to dial up.. I havent found a game I cant play at ulra presets.. 60+ fps built all in all $482

I am hooked on xeon ..running a 2667 v4 8 core 16 thread cpu on a z 440 matched with a gtx 3050 no issues. My only slow down is my hdd that came with the pc , think i will go with nmve drive . Gonna have to re load everything on it because i dont trust a cloning .

Xeons are great, if you’re building on Haswell or X99 and older. Newer desktop chipsets don’t support Xeons.

Got an old Xeon workstation from 2011 for free that was used for CAD and I put a Gtx 1070 in it so now able to game at 1080p medium/high settings for $120.

Even though 4th and 5th gen Xeon Scalable Workstation and Server CPU's share the same socket (LGA 4677) they are not compatible in each others motherboards. For example, the W series will only work in a W790 chipset motherboard and will not work in any motherboard with a server chipset. And if you really want a modern Xeon as your daily driver, I would recommend getting the W series. Preferably one of the X SKU's so that you can overclock it, since Intel was rather conservative with the clock speeds. You are also very unlikely to ever need any of the special accelerators inside the server oriented Xeons for your homelab.

2680 V4 will bottleneck. 2690 V4 is a better cpu but i'd rather go i3-12100F

Idk why lots of people hate on xeons cheap build, they offer good performance for low price. Sure you cant upgrade it, but if you want best performance for your low budjet this is by far the best option. Not everybody are capable of buying new and shiny stuff, if someone manages to build a fairly decent xeon gaming rig with low budjet, i can respect that.

I paired a Xeon E3 1280 v2 with an R7 360 for my first build, I hope it would serve me well

the w-2135/45 xeon's with quad channel ram are vicious gaming rigs and they are cheap too.

yes, significantly. slap quad channel ram on it and its a monster. it will have more cores/threads, and crushes it everywhere else, including clock speeds. the 2135 is 6 core 12 thread 3.7 ghz to 4.5 ghz boost, vs the 4 core 8 thread 3.6 ghz to 4.2 ghz boost. the quad channel ram is icing on the cake.

well you can buy a barnd pc for like 150$ with a 685w psu (in my case, and it was a t5810) then 16gb ddr4 2400mhz ram 20-30$ ecc, then a xeon e5 2696 or 97 v3 cpu for 75$ and then your gpu can saty. all of them with 1 year warranty. i mean tahts how i got mine. Thois xeon cpu is at around the same level as a 19 10900k but it has even more cache

Intel Xeon do sometime shine as the most “cheapest” CPU in grey market. My CPU is E5-2650v2 which cost $10 and until now still works like a charm. Combining with ECC RAM which is also ironically also cheaper than Non-ECC RAM.

Xeon's are amazing. If you have a great combo. You are able to beat a regulair Ryzen 5 5600x or an regulair i5 11th gen. 😁 But to be honest. They might be amazing for budget build but be aware, they eat electricity like it is nothing. 😂

I used an older Xeon E series. Had 16 Cores and worked fine. Was still worse than my Ryzen 5 5600

You should talk about used workstation gpus. Depending on the architecture, It could easily compete with video encoding (streamline gpus) with an extremely low wattage.

Have you found a best xeon for gaming? According to my research e5 -2667 v3 is good for gaming but it has like 145 watts tdp too much for me tbh. For me e5-2680 v4 look good for me but it has low frequency with base clock of 2.4 but good enough tho with turbo boost it can have 2.9- 3.3 GHz. And this one has tdp of 120 watts. What do you think ??

i have a 1620 v2 paired with an rtx 2060 and it does 1080p gaming very well

dont use xeon cpus for minecraft servers, use ryzen cpus for it

Do you need ecc memory for most xeons or any xeons never gave em much thought. I’d only ever take one if I got a working platform already and just slot in a few parts 😂

They support ECC but you can use any standard memory. Avoid buying registered memory that is always dirt cheap.. because its most of the time tied to some specific platform and wont work in any other pc. Usually HP sells this

I'm literally about to buy a rig thats got a w-2145 (8c16t) 3.7 ghz boosts to 4.5 ghz, 32 gb quad channel ram, 2 tb nvme and a 3080 for 700 bucks. It will destroy many newer gaming pc's.

Look up the socket type when shopping for a cpu. They're categorized by an LGA (Land Grid Array). So match the Socket Name with the cpu and board.

Don't waste your time on alternative CPU designs from Intel or anyone else, because many times the combination of CPU/motherboard setup provides a better value over selecting a CPU that can only access certain motherboards that may not have the options you wanted on it specifically for gaming or for entertainments and streaming purposes.

Way too low clock speeds.

Using an 8 core 3.7GHz Xeon, released early 2012. Cost $10 and runs modern games no problem with an RTX 2070 and 128GB of decommissioned DDR3 server RAM ($0).

back in the day it was way easier. i had a z77 (socket 1155) asrock board and a xeon e3 1230v2 as a cpu which was like i7 3770 equivalent at the time with about 100€ saved on the cpu side. just that you couldnt overclock it, otherwise it was a banger cpu and even ran very cool (maxed out in the mid to high 50°C on an 120mm tower cooler)

I have two dual Xeon gold 6128 but I'm not sure to keep or sell.

My first foray into a gaming PC build was with a $24 Xeon X3440. If you don't give a damn about playing the latest games, an old Xeon paired with a GTX 10 series is a great start.

Found a xeon e3 1270 v2 for only 7 euros, its litteraly the same as i7 3770 just without igpu and higher clock speed by 0.10 ghz, so i use this for gaming and it hold up well

Xeons are waaay batter than icores to me
