The HX300 has three levels of HDR, but all of them pop quite a bit. There's no in-camera way of toning them down, but I'd imagine it wouldn't take more than a few seconds in an editing package. There is a B&W HDR mode that makes everything look very classy.
Mano, I just love your reviews! Interesting, informative and honest... I miss you when you go on holiday..
I always enjoy your reviews. You inspired me to actually dtart using my cameras and your reviews have actually helped me with a few decisions And also thank you for always providing links your reviews are by far some of the best i seen
I love all your videos Techmoan! even if it's something i'll probably never use, i still loving watching the videos. Keep up the awesome videos!
Great to have you back, Mat. I trust you're well rested. :)
Hope you had a wonderful holiday!
I'm in the same boat. The closest thing I found to a superzoom with all the features I needed and a mic-in was the Panasonic FZ200. In the end I gave up trying to get a do-it-all camera and bought this for my holidays and a different camera with a mic-in for making my future youtube videos.
Very nice. I've been considering getting a new camera that has a 50x optical zoom just because of what I thought they'd be capable of doing, but now seeing a 50x zoom in action, it makes it that much more of a must have.
Thanks Techmoan for another useful review. The Micro Muff works really well. Love that zoom too. I paid £60 for a used Sony HX60 that takes great shots, x30 optical zoom and slips into my pocket. Great for traveling.
Hilarious video. I just couldn't stop laughing, not sure if it was the fluffy thing or your deadpan delivery! Please let's have more funny things...
Gosh darn it. This is ingenious. I only say gosh darn it, because I had this idea a year later than when it came out. Darrrrrn. :D
Thanks a lot for this clip!!! You got me on this one. Keep em coming.
4:20 : WOW! At first I thought the Micromuff was pretty useless, because the wind was very noticeable, but then when you removed it... It's unbelievable!
Another top tip for those on a budget: I found a pice of old bath sponge cut down to size, shaped and stuck on with velcro in the same way works really well. You just have to be good with the scissors.
Mainly because I prefer Flip-up to Fold-out screens...but there are lots of other personal preference reasons....and I got it cheap from the Sony Refurb store.
YAYYYY .. Yer Back ;) Glad you had a good time on your break...
It's a full size lego man who was sitting on a bench in a Chicago mall on the Magnificent Mile. The original uncropped picture was of me sat next to him.
I was looking into the sony HX300 for when i go to canada for my gap year. seeing as i love the wild life there, instead of having an oversized and expensive lens i could get this little camera instead. i do plan on making videos as well while im over there and it would be really awesome if you could do a full length review of it. Thankyou -Will
Thanks for the info, very useful. I own the Sony HX400V which has the same sort of built-in mic. I have also got a Sony external mic that goes straight on the hotshoe, which is great.
That picture of the cruise was in Cartagena! We have a holiday home near there.
Excellent video!
It is a nice feature to be included in-camera, and yes, a bit of touch-up with an editing program will make for stellar photographs. HDR certainly has its place...appropriately used, of course. Thanks for the heads-up about this feature in the review...
Works very well for its size. It's not even meant to eliminate all wind noise, it just prevents the billowing bits of wind hitting your mike and eliminates the loudest "krump" sounds, turning them into a smoother, more natural hum sound. If you want better windproofing than this, you'd need to put your camera mike inside a hollow Rycote blimp with a furry 'dead cat' wrapped over it. The empty space between the mike and the fur would eliminate the small bits of airflow that still make it through
In case anyone wants to know...my next video will the long delayed 808#26 camera review. I'm working on it now. I wanted to get this quick video out in the meantime to give me a bit of breathing room.
It's easy enough to get a price of fluffy material, attaching it to a piece of Velcro in such as way so that it doesn't come apart easily is another matter. I'd suggest spend £15 and save yourself a lot of time and hassle. A few clicks of the mouse and a ready made solution gets delivered to your door.
It's always good to take a holiday.
Wow, impressive footage from the HX300, gives my a35 dSLR a run for its money.
I'm always thinking about the next video...
There's nothing wrong with my old HX100V, and I'm still using it at home - because it can be powered and record at the same time (something the 300 won't allow out of the box). The HX300V is snappier all round - I can switch between video and photos a lot quicker which is useful on the go. It's quicker and more reliable at focussing and the novelty effects I show in the video are all only available on the HX300. It has a 50x rather than the 30x zoom of the HX100V. It also accepts filters.
I'm glad you're back Techmoan! I've already bought SJ1000 and Mobius actioncam from your reviews. I'm wondering whether you'll do a review of the 808 #26? I'm looking forward in buying one too.
It's been a good break. I wanted to try something simple to see if I remembed how to do this, before attacking the 808#26 review head-on.
Well... thanks. You'll be glad to know I've no more holidays planned and will be able to devote more hours to making these videos from September.
I did, thanks.
That little hairpiece works great!
Would've been nice too see some footage from your vacation, maybe a commentary on the things you got to see and do. I know it's a tech-channel but maybe sharing some other interesting stuff you do wouldn't hurt. And you're so good at presenting, it's bound to bring more crowd in... That cruiser pretty awesome, btw. :)
Thanks for the hard work :)
A video about effective wind noise reduction would be excellent. Always having problems with my GoPro 2 and Ego camera with wind noise on my motorbikes.
That Sony camera is very nice!
Matt, you can desaturate the HDR shots to make them look less garish and thereby take advantage of all its other positive attributes. Thanks for the nice 50X shots, too.
more of Sony HX300 PLEASE :D
They call it Store on the website.
Interesting product.
Amazing I will to buy 2 for my video camera
Nice sunglasses, what make & model? Thanks, oh, great video but thats what I've come to expect with you! Thanks for your wind muff critique, how did you know thats what I was looking for?
Matt,,Just wondering is there a setting on the HX300 camera to cut out wind noise...and how do you find it works...Thank you again for these gems...
I love the comparisons you used for who the Micro Muff looks like. Got say £15 for a bit of Velcro and Fluff is a right rip off though. £2.99 is about the right price :)))))).
Fantastic website and great reviews. Love your work mate. and awesome cruise too by the looks of it. Lucky you! Just a dumb question: i'm sure you love having the different cameras and things to review and play with, but regarding your 50x zoom-equipped sony camera, would it not be better to but a DSLR or a mirrorless wich have better sensors and of course better pic/vid quality and then get the different lenses to add on as desired (but a 50x zoom lens could cost more than a dedicated camera?)
They are prescription lens glasses with transition lenses.
The lens goes nice and wide...24-1200mm
l asked for something like this in a camera shop and they didn't know of any so l used cotton wool .l think l will wait until l see one in the £ shop ,l had a small tripod stand from there . Thanks Techmoan.
How do you do the color thing? Where you take out all colors except one.
Where did you get your sunglasses from? I can't find any that suit me and yours look like they will.
how much would youre new camera cost (us) and is it common to find? i like it. also im looking for a camera like that. good optical zoom yet compact and all around decent, but for a reasonable price depending on the quality stills and video.
Btw you can eliminate much of the wind noise that still remains by using a graphic equaliser. Most wind noise is low down, around 100 Hz, so it won't affect vocals.
Is there an external microphone for this camera? And where can I buy it? And how would I connect it?

No, Nowhere and You can't.
Do you by chance have an Amazon link for this?
Hey there! Nice video...i just bought this camera and can't figure how to take HDR shots? also is there anything like HDR Video? Please help!
Will you review the camera itself?
I edit in iMovie.
Where can I get this? I need it for my Sony HX350
When are you in Croatia
I see (hear...) quite a difference between "with" or "without micro muff" on the motorbike. Because with the muff you can at least hear a bit of the engine's sound to determine the rpm and switching gears. whereas without you just hear the wind noise.
My mate got the same camera, takes surprising great shots, little laggy. The lower light isn't great and no raw, jpeg only, which is why I don't own one. I really want a massive zoom but on my nex it would be a massive lens
CLICK THE LINK in the video description.
A 30x zoom equivalent for a DSLR costs about £500 (Sigma 150-500mm) and it's massive. I'm not sure you can even get a 50x equivalent.
where can I order it? thanks from Berlin Germany . For my iphon 4s and 5!
I cannot locate mic on my Sony A68 ... please help
Heya Mat, I was wondering what editing software you use? Thanks -Arthur
Why did you choose Sony HX300, not Nikon P520 or Canon SX50?
The glasses are just own-brand prescription transition lenses from a highstreet optician.
Man... What a name...
There is...like most cameras...they never work very well though.
You sir need to make more videos.
Have you tried the Micro Merkin? It dampens my GF echo.
What's the problem with the hx100v
Is there a bigger muff?
Not one for me....1280x960 & MJPEG.
How was the break from KZread?
While I appreciate your videos, I feel sorry for you not having any other holidays planned ;)
That HDR mode is ridiculous on that camera. Haha. I kinda like it.
Those micro muffs look a little like the hair on those troll dolls. :P
I really should of been watching this while sitting next to my cat.... The end of that tale looks like it could save me £15
Is this or anything similar available in the U.S ?

yeah, for under a dollar at the fabric store you can get velcro and for a buck or so at a thrift store you can get a furry stuffed animal. No reason to spend the $25 they charge for this!

Is on holiday... still does his job :D
Thing is, that's around £13 -£20! I was looking for something around 1-2 PENCE, for my drift stealth 2 camera.

tristram gordon Just find the same material and stick it on, be carful not to get glue in the mic though!
On the Contour camera (if I owned one) I'd just put a piece of tape over the microphone hole, since I wouldn't care about the audio quality while driving the motorcycle, anyway.
They are in on the joke....you can tell when you see some of the other names they used for different sized versions on their website
The wind still enters through the velcro
ive been on Azura, Oceana And Britania
I will now buy 50 of those Micro Muffs and stick them to my bald head!
Think i'll just get the wife to grow me one down below then trim it off n use that LOL... will save 15 quid.. was looking at getting the HX200v yesterday as its got some very good video reviews didn't know the 300 was out yet. will now have a search for that.. cheerz.
I don't upload holiday videos to youtube.
Didn't you have hx100v
thank
