Using 3D printed tool to replace Valve Stem Seals on N42/N46 BMW engine

This 3D printed Valve Spring Compressor Tool is specially designed to change valve stem seals on a BMW N42/N46 engines. Changing worn valve stem seals will greatly reduce oil consumption and blue smoke coming out of the exhaust after idle.
Check out my DIY guides for more detailed information on how to change valve stem seals:
• BMW N42/N46 Valve Stem...
• BMW E46 N42/N46 Valve ...
Symptoms that require this repair:
Engine suddenly started consuming a lot of oil (6 dcl/1000 km). I had some substantial oil leaks, so I first had to replace:
- oil pan gasket,
- valve cover gasket,
- Valvetronic motor gasket
- Valvetronic sensor connector flange,
- vaccum pump o-rings,
- VANOS solenoid o-rings.
I also replaced the CCV system, but nothing fixed the oil consumption problem. Replacing the valve stem seals was the next step...

Just finished mine today using your 3D printed tools. Tools were perfect and very good quality, job was indeed fiddly, but all seals are now done. Mine had shrunk quite a lot making the hole in the old seal much larger than the hole in the new seal. Its no wonder the car was smoking. Hoping to shove the rest of the engine back together tomorrow and test it Saturday. Thanks for the video and the tools.

I removed the spark plug using atf oil and wiggle it a lot. Thread seems to be still working but in case; I ordered a self tapping spark plug thread maker which doesn’t require you to remove cylinder head. Anyway I finish the job and result is 0 smoke. I want to say so much thank you to you. This complicated work became easy with your videos.

Hi BimmerZen, I just dropped a valve on 3rd cylinder, the motor was secured by pin in flywheel. I removed the old seal and wanted to install a new one. As I applied pressure to the spring, it loose the compression and I turned off my compressor to see what happened. I know it's stupid situation, but how can I get the valve back in place without removing cylinder head? Or if it possible to remove the cylinder head without lifting the car? 😩 N46 e91

Hi is it absolutely necessary to dismantle Vanos? There's a video in which guys in Africa are changing valve stem seals on N46 engine in same way but with Vanos units and the timing chain still in place. Asking cause might be even faster and maybe safer taking only Valvetronic and exhaust camshaft leaving Vanos units with the chain as it is. Only asking is it possible to remove Valvetronic without taking Vanos apart.

  • @BimmerZen

VANOS impulse sending gears are held in correct timing with the VANOS bolts and when you remove them, everything rotates freely. Maybe if you mark everything precisely... It's just easier and safer to retime the engine with the special tools.
