Ciao Maha! كيف الحال؟ I have a question: is it culturally accepted/practiced in Palestine to reply "honestly" to this kind of question? I'm currently living in west Africa and I'm noticing people tend to always say they're doing well even if they're not. I feel small talk is like this in many other places in the world and I am wondering maybe in Palestine it's more frequent to hear someone replying they're not so well or زفت Just a curiosity 😉 Thanks and congrats for the contents you propose!

That's a good question. You only have to be in the Middle East, say Saudi Arabia. When people greet each other, it's like a whole process, like language ping pong, with phrases that complement other phrases. Now, It's an Islamic thing to always count your blessings, as things could be worst right. Even in that situation, you may still say 'Alhamdulilah' - All praise is due to Allah. If you're asked and you reply that something is wrong, most likely the person will make a 'dua' supplication to for you. So if your car got stolen they may ask Allah to grant you better car than that, of if you weren't feeling well, they may ask Allah to grant you good health, etc, etc. One thing to note/that I found, Arabs are the most hospitable people, something that I miss being back in Europe.

@@SA-cloud thanks for the insight! I agree with you that indeed religion plays a key role and shapes greetings, among other things. I find it to be fascinating and beautiful that people approach each other by focusing on their blessings machallah, instead of complaining of what could be better. I think this approach is contagious because, after all, why should you be the only one who complains while everybody else is grateful ?

There was also Arab Palestinians before the Islamic conquest. The reason why Arabic took over, is the same reason Akkadian, Amoritic, Aramaic and Greek took over. Arabic became the lingua franca, for Palestine it was easier because Palestine had already a majority Arab speaking population in the Levant, so when the Muslims came they could already communicate with the Palestinians like a Texan can with a Californian.
