Use This Trick for Better Marker Blends & Coloring with Alcohol Pens!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Use This Trick for Better Marker Blends & Coloring with Alcohol Pens! This method will help you choose marker colors for coloring and blending and save you money when shopping for new colors. Best of all it will work with any brand of alcohol markers or a mish mash of different brands.
The first 13 minutes of this video shows my swatch guide method. The remainder of the video is a coloring demo.
You can find the swatch stamps I used here: shrsl.com/1ikkh
and here: shrsl.com/1ikkn
The set of alcohol markers can be found here (120 color Ohuhu) amzn.to/2YcOqVA
Colored samples:
Animals from Pawsome set: shrsl.com/1ilmf
Daffodils from Darkroom Door: topflightstamps.com/products/...
Space set from AC Moore (Love Nicole)
Paper: I use Neenah Classic Crest Super Smooth 80# in color Solar White shrsl.com/1imdc that is a link to a 25 sheet pack for $6, if you love it then you can order it by the ream of 250 sheets on amazon for around $40 amzn.to/2U4LJX2 (it is actually $36 right now!)
Here's what to do (as explained in the video)
1. Swatch out all of your markers noting the brand and color number on your swatch.
2. Sort your markers in groups by their color and undertones. For instance you would have pinks, pinkish reds, neutral reads, coral/orange reds, warm (orange) yellows, cool (green leaning) yellows, yellow-greens, teals, blues, purples, cool grays, warm grays, neutrals etc.
*Sort them as specifically as you like. If you are new to coloring with alcohol markers keep groups smaller (less than 6 colors) but no more than 12. *If you have more than 12 break them into two group that are more specific. Secure each group with a rubber band.
3. Swatch the colors on a strip of cardstock. *Always swatch on the paper you normally use for markers.
4. Punch a circle in the center of each swatch. *You can peek through the circle to help choose colors for projects or when shopping for new markers.
***Bring this swatch with you when you shop to avoid buying duplicate color and to make sure you are purchasing colors that will work with what you have. Update your swatch when you get new markers.
Coloring tips:
Choose a light, medium and dark version of a color for blending. I like to work dark to light but if you paper doesn't bled well prime an area with the lightest color first and then work dark to light.
If you have limited colors or you are not happy with your marker colors you can enhance with darker or lighter colored pencils.
A white pen is handy for bright highlights and shine.

I think the most important thing I learned from you I hadn't realized since swatching colors was to put a hole in the middle of it so you can put something underneath to see how it looks. Such a simple little tip that makes a huge difference. Thanks

Lindsey, I watched 50 seconds of your video and had to write this. I am of the opinion that education and learning is not possible in short bursts of 15 minutes; that's not education that's an infomercial. To understand a subject requires time, patience and some discipline. I would not worry so much about the complaints of people who are inpatient that a video takes a little time to explore an important subject. Especially since we are given tools to speed up the process (Play Back feature allows viewers to speed up the video from 1.25 to 2 times the speed making a one hour video 30 minutes) or, watch it in segments, a little at a time. Most of those same people have no problem watching a Marvel movie that runs 2 hours and 20 minutes. Lindsey, just keep producing quality content no matter what the duration and continue teaching us uncultured people that we can be artistic too🤓🤓! Lisa

Hi Lindsay, You should not pay attention to those people who say your videos are too long. For one, I and many other like the way you explain in detail how to do it right and rush through it. I prefer to have one take a hour and explain it to me, than to have someone take 5 minutes, show it real quick and I got nothing out it. Swatching takes a long time to do. I have the Ohuhu makers and I did my swatch, the same day that received them. The tag idea was great, I will have to do that when I get some time. I want to thank you so very much for taking the time to do what you do. You are one of a kind, with a heart of gold Lindsay.

You put the warning of the long video right upfront, so the Naysayers can go away. Personally I love a long video and I can always fast-forward if I want to, or come back and watch more later. I really got a lot out of the idea of bundling the markers in colour groupings. I have both Copics and Spectrum Noirs and it would make sense to mix the two brands this way if my storage system would permit. Great info in this video and we appreciate your advice and expertise. TFS.

I don't understand people complaining about long videos. Apparently they don't realize there's a pause button? If I don't have time to watch a long video, I either wait until I have the time or I start to watch, pause it, then come back later. Sometimes I actually save the longer videos for occasions when I'm doing stuff like folding laundry or other tasks that don't require my full attention. I'm sure this 45 min video took hours to film, edit and upload. The way I see it, I'm getting free lessons from experienced crafters. I'm certainly not about to disrespect the KZreadr or the hours of work that went into producing all that free content. Great info as always, Lindsay, and thanks for sharing.

EH, take the time you need to communicate the subject/topic. There are ways to fast forward a video if one is in a bit of a hurry. I watch most videos from start to finish then save to category appropriate for me and then later zip through if necessary to get to the spots I wish. 5. I never have problems with the length of your videos. You are one of the artists who fill them with important information that spells things out. The wordy ones that DO annoy me are the ones who include all of their personal off topic information which has nothing to do with their project. They drone on and on with lame personal excuses or apologies which don't matter to the task at hand. I almost feel like I am their counselor and they lack a best friend :) Their ideas are simple and should have been shown in 10 minutes, instead of 25. I am so glad that I view on a desktop, and that little gear icon will allow me to view them 1.5 through 2.0 speed, and I often do!

you will get it, there is a steeper learning curve with alcohol markers than other mediums and I think people assume that they would color better if they bought more expensive markers or that they will never get it. Anyone can learn, it just take practice and choosing colors that are in the same family:)

I never think your videos are too long. They are very informative. They can always speed up the video or skip around. I really don't understand complaints.

Hi Lindsay, I agree with the majority of the commenters in liking your in-depth explanations. I get the notifications via mail and it shows the length of the video. If I don't have the time to watch I mark the mail as "unread" to save it for later. You put a lot of work into your videos and in my opinion it's so rude to complain about the length. No one is forced to watch them, so why do those people believe they're entitled to complain? Especially taking into account that your videos are FOR FREE! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and please, don't apologize for taking the time you need to give us valuable information. Love, Tina

Thank you for taking the time to make this comprehensive coverage of using our existing supplies, and how to effectively expand our markers without duplicating existing colors. All art takes time, Never so uch as learning how to use a media. Please continue with sharing your expertise, many of us rely on teachers to expand our own abilities. Not having to reinvent the wheel is appreciated.

Lindsay I like long up loads. I watch Dede Willingham, Janet M. Young, and Barb Owen and they are going for an hour and a half up to 3 hours. So you know not everyone feels your uploads are too long, you are well spoken and your voice tones do not grate on my ears, you show enthusiasm for you topic/subject and you give honest opinions. Thank you for sharing and know that the nay sayers are not your only viewers.

Please ignore people crying about a 'long video'. It takes TIME to master a new skill. The in-depth FREE knowledge is well worth the time spent watching your videos. I've been in plenty of art classes where the instructors barley went into different techniques. Keep doing your thing, it is working.

Lindsey, first, thank you for the tutorial and the advice, second, please don’t ever apologize for imparting your considerable knowledge, on your own time, _gratis._ (I know this is part of your business but the point is, I didn’t have to pay for lesson.) I hope you don’t feel the need to alter your tutorials because of complaints about the length of them. As you rightly stated, you’re providing information that took you a lot of time and effort to learn. If someone doesn’t have the time to watch a particular tutorial, they have the luxury of pausing it and getting back to it when they have the time. If the problem is their own impatience, that isn’t something they should try to make _your_ problem.

Great video Lindsey! I like that you are very through with the information you are giving and if someone doesn't like that then like you said. It's not the video for them, but how else are you going to learn if not by looking at things thoroughly? Thank you, and just keep your videos coming😊💕

I loved every minute, you don't need to apologize for a comprehensive lesson. I am new to alcohol markers, so I learned a lot. Also I already swatched, but not in such an organized way. I love swatches! It is also fun to do. No stress, just filling in blocks and watching what colors develop. Never thought of making the swatch cards on a ring. But I do put embroidery flosses on a ring to match fabric colors, so it makes sense to me.

Another vote for longer videos. This one is excellent for a relative newcomer to markers, like me. Too many videos on markers are far too brief, too general, or they're almost self-advertisements, not instructional at all. In this video, the way you've grouped and swatched your markers (quite different from the way I've used), those "comparison punch hole cards", and especially the use of colored pencils to supplement a marker "painting" are all very valuable. I learned a **lot**. Thanks.

I LOVE this! The idea of the hole in the swatch is wonderful! I always bend paint swatches to put the colors together because the white border messes up my eyes...having the hole to put the color right against the other colors is great!!! Thank you so much Lindsay! This video was GREAT!!!

Many thanks for sharing years of hard work & learning with your public!

Huh. You know, I've watched dozens of your videos and I've never noticed if they're long or short. I just absorb the information. You pare it down to the essentials already and you impart a ton. So.....and about this one specifically, I think it's incredibly clever to punch a hole in the swatch! Why hasn't anyone thought of that before?!!! Too, everyone speeds up the coloring parts and if, like me, someone is trying to learn, it's difficult to see methods. I appreciate that you did this in real time. You do you and don't worry about the rest.
