[TRANSCRIPT (Partial)]
One of the things you see with people, all the time, is that maybe they’re trying to stumble forward, towards their ideal, as poorly defined as it might be, but then they’re afraid, right? They’re afraid about what they might encounter, and that stops them, because fear does stop people. It freezes you, like a prey animal. People move ahead, but then they get afraid, and then they stop moving ahead, and that’s not so good. Negative emotion is a really powerful motivator, so we’re more motivated by negative emotion than positive emotion, quantitatively speaking. Quantitatively speaking, you can measure that. That’s, I think, because we can only be so happy, but we can really be suffering and dead. You have to pay more attention to the negative, and that’s bad, because the negative can stop you.
...
So then you think, ok, ‘I’m trying to make this decision. I’m going to try to do something difficult, and isn’t that terrifying.’ And then you think, ‘yeah, but wait a minute. What’s really terrifying is not doing it.’ And then you think about the cost of not doing it. In the Future Authoring Program, we have people do this little meditative exercise, which is, ok, think about your insufficiencies, by your own definition, the way that you don’t do what you know you should do-about the things that you do, that you shouldn’t do, that you know you shouldn’t do beyond a shadow of a doubt. There’s some things like that. That’s bad habits, and poor aim, and resentment, and hatred, and aggression, and unresolved conflicts, and all those things that are dementing and warping you. And then think, ok, those things get the upper hand, man. They get the upper hand, and they take you to the worst possible place you could go in the next three to five years. What exactly does that look like? And so you sketch all that out, and you think, ‘hey, I don’t want to go there.’ The next time that a temptation comes up, you think, ‘well, it’d be a lot better for me if I didn’t succumb to this temptation.’ That’s kind of weak, eh? You’d look a little better if you didn’t eat like a cheesecake a day, or something like that. That’s something, but it’s not the same as, I’m going to have diabetes, and I’m going to lose my damn leg in five years if I don’t get my eating under control. That’s motivating. So then the temptation comes along, and you think, ‘oh, how about no?’ Seriously-how about no? Not just because a higher good would be obtained if I avoided it, but because a terrible catastrophe would be averted if I didn’t.
Well, so you want to get your fear behind you, right? You want to get it behind you, where it’s pushing you forward, instead of in front of you, where it’s stopping you. You get your fear behind you, pushing you forward, by actually thinking through the consequences of not putting your life together, and that the least of those is that you waste it, and suffer. You’re going to suffer anyways, man, so you waste it, and suffer. That’s a bad deal, because, maybe, if you’re going to suffer, you could at least do something noble, glorious, upright, powerful, honourable, admirable, helpful, and difficult. That’s just so much better, and maybe that’s good enough so that you think, ‘hey, a little suffering; it’s basically worth it. At least it’s a way forward.’

@THE REAL L.C Well, Im in the system (UK) for depression and other things, but teally it's not a chemical imbalance, just a bad life circumstance - hence why I did the future programme so as to plan a way out towards a better life. And in that sense it worked - I definitely have a clear plan of action to get to where I need to go. However, my real problem is insoluable - and, yes, I was brutally honest - what I truly desire is impossible, and the next best realistic option is depressing because it is not good enough. Good enough so that I am willing to strive for it, but not good enough for me to ever believe I will be truly happy or he really motivated to obtain it.

I have noticed that the fracking of the moment? Is where you are able to better see threw things. As it goes in repetitions you realize that now you are making less and less mistakes. Wisdom is born. Just practice give it your best shot with out the fear of failure. It will make you! God bless Dr. Peterson

I'd recommend be careful of using fear. For me, coming from whatever you want to call my upbringing. I pushed myself for fear of going back to where I started. In all honesty, I was maybe also afraid of what success would be and to lose that. I feel that fear of having to go back to where I started kept me from taking risks. I just did my very best to get by. Not to blossom or make something of myself. I ain't shit and I know I dont come from much. My sister was murdered and I lost 3 brothers to drug over doses. Alexander the Great said that the chain of love is an easy chain to break. It's broken on a whim, for greed or jealous. The chain of fear is the strongest. Men who fear you will not cross you for fear of what you may do. It's high time we talk about fear and love and how to use then to motivate, not just be a feeling. Thank you to anyone hearing this. I appreciate you taking a little of your time.

The problem with using fear as a motivator is that it increases anxiety and sometimes limits the potential outcomes.

What i really like about Dr. Jordan Peterson are his hands gestures and body language that he does when he's speaking or telling a story! It makes him more interesting to watch.

This was such a great choice of a concept to make into one of your videos! Solid, solid choice. I think it's one of the most important concepts or ideas he discusses (and honestly I needed to hear this!). Thanks again for your great work. Looking forward to the future ones!

I used to think fear was a bad thing until I realised fear is your friend, it is a tool you must utilise in order to push yourself forward and use as motivation, you need to be scared in order to get yourself to work, fear builds resilience. Now the only thing I’m truly scared of is God🙏 kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZXqVqbxwidLTaNo.html

Thank you for uploading this exerpt from Jordan Peterson's speeches and AMAZING VIDEO TITLE by the way ! I suffer from Severe anxiety & chronic depression (dysthymia), I take meds : THEY HELP (but my expectations were far too high : I expected them to solve all my mental problems and 100% free me from pain.. I was soo naïve, but that seems to happen often when someone is in severe pain..)
