I started to pay very careful attention to what I was saying. I don’t know if that happened voluntarily or involuntarily, but I could feel a sort of split developing in my psyche. I’ve actually had students tell me that the same thing has happened to them after they’ve listened to some of the material that I’ve been describing to all of you. But I split into two, let’s say.
One part was the old me that was talking a lot, that liked to argue, and that liked ideas. There was another part that was watching that part, just with its eyes opened, and neutrally judging. The part that was neutrally judging was watching the part that was talking, and going, that wasn’t your idea; you don’t really believe that; you don’t really know what you’re talking about; that isn’t true. I thought, hm! That’s really interesting! That was happening to like 95 percent of what I was saying, and then I didn’t really know what to do. I thought, ok, this is strange. Maybe I fragmented, and that’s just not a good thing, at all. It’s not like I was hearing voices, or anything like that.
So then I had this weird conundrum: which of these two things are me? Is it the part that’s listening and saying, no, that’s rubbish; that’s a lie; you’re doing that to impress people; you’re just trying to win the argument. Was that me? Or was I the part that was going about its normal, verbal business? I didn’t know, but I decided that I would go with the critic. And then what I tried to do-what I learned to do, I think-was to stop saying things that made me weak. I mean, I’m still trying to do that. I’m always feeling, when I talk, whether or not the words that I am saying are making me align or making me come apart. I really do think that the alignment is the right way to conceptualize it, because if you say things as true as you can say them, then they come out of the depths inside of you. We don’t know where thoughts come from. We don’t know how far down into your substructure the thoughts emerge. We don’t know what process of physiological alignment is necessary for you to speak from the core of your being. We don’t understand any of that-we don’t even conceptualize that. But I believe that you can feel that.
It’s a shock. You might think, well, do you really want all of that to burn off? Well, there’s nothing left but a little husk-5 percent of you. Well, if that 5 percent is solid, then maybe that’s exactly what you want to have happen.
It’s not self-destructive, because it’s like the diagnosis of an illness. It’s like, if that does happen to be the case for you, to some degree-maybe it’s only 10 percent of you, or maybe it’s 90 percent-well, then coming to terms with that is excellent, because, maybe, you can stop doing it. What would be the downside to that? You’d have to give up your resentment, hatred, and all of that, obviously. That’s annoying, because those emotions are easy to engage in, and they’re engaging, and they have a feeling of self-righteousness with them. But you’re not doing this to put yourself down: you’re doing this to separate the wheat from the chaff and to leave everything that you don’t have to be, behind.

About 13 years ago I wondered what I would sound like if I said nothing negative about anyone, any thing, any event... and I soon had nothing to say! How awful must I have been before that! More recent years have seen me try and say less negative stuff about my own self and it does feel better.

That's not exactly what Jordan is talking about. He's pointing out how one should tell apart the voice that comes from our "monkey mind" (or "racing thoughts") from to the voice that comes out of the depths of our real soul. It's not a difference between negative and positive -- but between what's fake and what's authentic.

I did the opposite to become more useful. Positivity in overdrive made me ignorant of the shadow in myself and others. I became meek, lacking ambition and making excuses for others. These things must be balanced and used constructively. Both have potential to destroy.

You have a friend, and you know exactly how she'll react to ANYTHING you tell her? You know someone who always relates every story back to themselves, or their military service, or some celebrity they once knew? We think of those people as simple and repetitive, but we think each pronouncement from our own lips is utterly fascinating. We can't all be right.

Not to the point that he couldn't socialise, but I remember when people were talking he just sat back and listened until he just straight out said over the table to no specific person. I don’t remember where I heard it recently but the gist was that everything you do or say by choice is a vote for the person you will become. Do you want to be negative or even mean? Do you want to be a procrastinator or even lazy? Or do we want to “burn off the chaff”? It’s always up to us. But every choice we make moves us another step down a path.

It exists whether you believe it does or not. You cannot create any reality that doesn’t already exist unless it is a false one. There is an absolute truth. That is the reality we all live in wether you believe it or not. We don’t get to play God and create “reality” through our thinking. That is not how it works.

Thinking that we create our own reality is bogus. You are deceiving yourself. The Bible is truth. the Bible is not open to interpretation. There is absolute truth in it. This phenomena happened to me this year. Started immediately after I learned about Carl Jung’s collective unconscious (about 2 months ago) As soon as I read about the collective i had this indescribable feeling of “HOLY SHIT THERES MORE TO LIFE” and it almost resembled an acute period of enlightenment/revelation/alignment/some gnostic type vibe. Ever since then I have been able to slowly rewire my very essence. First I observed my words/actions, then I observed my thoughts, and now im observing the observer. Hard to describe, phenomena. Huge thanks to JP for keeping me conscious in this mentally liber stage of my life.

I believe that anxiety is the core reason for our negativity. Although we need cortisol during times that require us to react swiftly in an emergency the every-day stresses of life can be debilitating and it is caused by worrying which is a by-product of anxiety and then we project that anxiety on to others who are also anxious and so it spreads.

"Energy flows where attention goes" Mr. Peterson experienced a lift in his consciousness as he obserbed his thoughts as a neutral judge. This is some 3000 years old vedantic method to notice what is really true and what is just your mind's false conviction. Analytical meditation or in other words the "neti neti" (not this not that) process is very useful to get a clear picture of yourself. Mindfulness practices and meditation could help to improve this ability. "In the mirror of your mind all kinds of pictures appear and disappear. Knowing that they are entirely your own creations, watch them silently come and go. Be alert, but not perturbed. This attitude of silent observation is the very foundation of yoga. You see the picture, but you are not the picture." - Nisargadatta Maharaj

I love JP, and this is (like all of it) fairly brilliant. It's also, in my opinion, tragic and not a sustainable long-term solution. Fighting through the weak chaff and coming up with only the things that make you feel strong is a defensive state, a threat response to a hostile will (or wills) in your environment. It's a state that's necessary to have access to, but exhausting to maintain. I think it's equally important to secure an environment in which you can be freely vulnerable, which is to say honest about the parts of you that are actually weak. Who can live peacefully in an environment in which people are constantly valenced on a scale of weak to strong?
