    “Why do they call him Noya-san?” -> a guide to Japanese honorifics! (if I make any mistakes please correct me in the replies) -san = a term of respect toward peers, people older than you, or adults. If you’re a teenager talking to an older teenager, it’s to show that you acknowledge that they’re your respected elder. If you’re a teen talking to an adult, like it’s like saying “Mr/Mrs/Ms” or “Sir/Ma’am” -kun = a casual and kinda affectionate way to refer to a boy, like saying “Kageyama-kun” would show that you’re his friend. I think it’s primarily for your peer or someone younger than you, not someone older. -chan = like -kun except usually used for girls, though young boys (middle school & younger) will use it for each other. You’ll hear Oikawa (the amazing server on Seijoh aka Aoba Johsai) exclusively call his teammate Iwaizumi (#4) “Iwachan” and it’s used to show how long they’ve known each other & how close they really are. From what I know, I think it’s considered pretty cutesy and affectionate. But when Oikawa calls Kageyama “Tobio-chan,” he says it to be patronizing. It’s like if you knew a kid named Jonathan and you mockingly called him Johnny like he was a little kid. -sensei = teacher! -senpai = upperclassmen/older colleague, not always used and sometimes replaced with -san to be more formal/polite; some people (like Noya & Tanaka) really love being called senpai. You can either call someone just “Senpai” or you can call them [their name]-senpai, like Nishinoya-senpai. It can also be used as a collective noun, like referring to Suga, Daichi, & Asahi as “our senpai.” -sama = someone in great authority, like president/majesty/highness/lord/lady

    Mild correction: -kun is not exclusively to address males, although it is certainly most often used for males. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT for people who have a higher position than you (ex: elder, your boss, etc). It is also a common honorific for someone to address their subordinate in professional settings (ex: a boss to their employee) regardless of gender. For example, if you watch Detective Conan, Inspector Megure uses -kun for his subordinates, even to Sato, who is a woman. He also extends it to Ran, calling her "Ran-kun", because she is Kogoro's daughter and Kogoro is his ex-subordinate. Also, even though it's a much more casual honorific than -san, there's still a degree of formality to it compared to -chan. For example, boys would more often just address their peers with their last names rather than adding -kun (ex: in the times Hinata used -kun to Kageyama or Tsukishima, he often switches to polite speech, even though the intention is to tease them). The fact that girls use -kun more often than boys also added to this politeness, because there's an unspoken expectation for girls to be more dainty/delicate and well-spoken than boys.

    To add on to your definition of "chan" and how it can be used in a patronizing manner, the same can go for "sama". For example, when you want to make fun of someone who acts full of themselves. I'm sure it will come up at some point in this show.

  • @draked6830

    @draked6830

    I'd like to point out that it's common for men to call girls (even ones younger than them) -san. As in, an adult male may call a younger girl (say, 10 years old) -san. This is because using -chan is very informal and affectionate, as you mentioned. Women can use both for girls younger than them - that is, -san and -chan - depending on who the woman is as a person. As an extension to this, my 4th grade chorus students will call me D-chan-sensei (or sometimes just D-chan) because we're close. I'd also say it's more common for boys to call each other -kun here, period. In my time here, I've heard -kun most and -san secondmost. There's a lot of weird nuances and "exceptions to rules" for -san, -kun, -chan, particularly with schoolkids, but I won't go further into it unless asked.

    “ボールがズシっとくる感じ” is what Shoyo says when it gets translated to “sloshed”. The translation here is difficult because it uses an onomatopoeia, which aren’t used nearly as much in English as they are in Japanese. 「ズシ」is the onomatopoeia of something heavy putting its weight against something else, so that’s what Shoyo is describing here. TLDR: “The feeling when the ball feel heavy against your hand” is the best translation I can think of

    In addition, this "ズシっ" may include not only the actual weight but also the psychological importance. For example, "Someone's words touched my heart." Even in such a case, Japanese expresses that the word felt "ズシっ". shoyo has the joy of hitting a ball set by someone, so I think it's a meaningful word in a double sense. It's just my interpretation.

    He was afraid to face Suga because of his kindness. Think of how it would feel if you let someone like Suga down super hard and disappointed him in a major way. Him being kind and forgiving just makes you feel like crap even more. Also remember these are all developing hormonal high school teenage boys, they do not always have an adult understanding of their feelings and what is going on with themselves or others.

    Fun fact to remember. This moment when Noya confronted Asahi and pushed the vice principal back, causing a vase to break is (most likely) the reason he was suspended and banned from volleyball practice. This is why Tanaka and the others said Noya isnt a troublemaker per se, just very passionate. Because it's the truth. And I love that. And that is why we love Nishinoya. Also a "quick" rundown on the honorifics: "-san" is gender neutral and used usually for older people/ people you respect (Ukai-san, Noya-san, Sugawara-san) "-senpai" also gender neutral and used directly for seniors or people in the same field with more experience (not necesarily older, but more experience or time in the field is important.) usually a sign of deep respect and almost a medal of honor. That's why "upperclassman" usually fits. Can be said by itself and is in anime a big trope as the "Senpai" are usually cool characters people look up to and idolize because they are cool and.... Mature and stuff. "-kun" USUALLY reserved for guys, a polite way to adress someone, especially younger than you, CAN HOWEVER be used by older men adressing younger girls (dont ask me why) "-chan" a cute addition (mostly for girls or old close friends. Remember Hinata was called "Shou-chan" by one of his middleschool friends) "-sensei" can stand alone like Senpai and is used usually for teachers and doctors. Tanaka has a lot of respect for Nishinoya, so he calls him "noya-SAN" even tho they are both second years. Kageyama generally speaks EXTREMELY polite to anyone (at least a year) older than him so he says their last name fully i.e. "Sugawara-san", "Nishinoya-san", "Tanaka-san". Takeda (the teacher with the glasses) calls most of the students "-kun" bc well they are younger/students and boys "Nishinoya-kun", "Kageyama-kun" Takeda is a teacher so you will hear the coach refering to him usually by "Sensei" Generally calling someone by the first name is INCREDIBLY impolite or shows that you are very close. Noya calls Tanaka Ryu (bc his first name is Ryunosuke) bc they are both second years and great buddies. He also calls the other second years by their first names, bc, well they are the same year and have been playing VB together, so why not, right? He also calls Hinata by his first name (Shouyo) bc Hinata was the one to call him "senpai" which basically means "okay i love this lil guy now he is my buddy", but in japanese culture first name with no honorifics is seen as rather impolite.

Asahi quits, Suga stays, but is hesitant, and Noya doubles down on training and gets better. It really shows how mindset matters!! Interesting character moment for Tsukki that he believes Kageyama encouraging Suga to set to Asahi after he's tried and failed to be sadistic... this show is great at seeding his mental state, before openly exploring it. The charm of Haikyu is the story of a team that is called a fallen powerhouse and who is about to be separated from the setback, and grows up with the addition of first-year students such as Hinata, Kageyama, and Tsukishima. It's not just about growth, it's about achieving revenge after major setbacks and changes. The conflict that each character had in it, overcoming it, and achieving and growing will overlap, and the team will become stronger. That's the point of Haikyu that creates excitement.

    Regarding the "Slosh" translation: Japanese is a language that uses a lot of onomatopoeia. In the episode Hinata is using the sound "Zu- shi" to describe how it feels when the ball hits his hand. 15:39 we understand that about mistakes because of our western culture where it's ok to make mistakes, but mistakes don't exist in Japanese society, they really are such a big deal for them, they are a true reason for shame. They rather not respond to a question they are unsure about in class than taking a chance and see if they get it right. That's why they have such a high success rate on absolutely everything they do while having such an incredible suicide rate unfortunately. The society puts so much pressure on people not to make mistakes that way too many can't handle it. That's why this is pictured like this in anime, half for the drama, half true story.

    East Asian cultures are group oriented societies, so each person’s efforts is supposed to benefit the collective. Compared to the individual oriented society of western cultures, it allows less agency and emphasizes selfless sacrifices, aka taking sole responsibility for mistakes and feeling intense shame as a result. However, this is why Japan is so safe, and certain crimes such as petty theft is nonexistent. People think of others rather than their own desires.

    when hinata says that the ball “sloshes” into his hand, the best translation I can think of is something along the lines of “I can feel the ball’s weight in my hand”. asahi’s name is pronounced like “asa-he”. also when it comes to learning names, don’t worry about taking a long time to learn. if I remember correctly, you said that this is your first anime, so remembering names on top of those names being in a different language is totally normal :) speaking of names and titles, “san” can be added to the end of someone who you respect’s name. There’s also a few other titles you’ll hear such as “kun” (takeda the supervising teacher sometimes calls coach “ukai-kun”) which is often used to address men who or younger or the same age as the other person, or “chan” which is often attached the name of someone who you are close to such as a family member or significant other. i’m really looking forward to the double reactions! there’s a specific character I’m excited for you to meet in episode 11 👀
