A *lot* of Shonen anime have this trope. The main duo is rivals but best friends at the same time. They’re very protective of each other even if they deny it to others but they also wanna compete against the other and succeed, and if the one gives up or doesn’t put in effort, the other usually snaps them out of it because their passion for whatever it is they’re working to succeed at is part of why their bond is so strong. It’s called the Stock Shonen Rival trope on TV Tropes

That conversation was groundbreaking for kageyama because when the point gap began to widen in the first set he shouldered all the pressure of closing it on himself instead of believing that his teammates could help. Some fun symbolism with Daichi, Suga, and Asahi. Their numbers are 1, 2, and 3 which not only reflects their seniority as the oldest members, but also the order they usually touched the ball when they all were starters. Daichi, 1, would dig, Suga, 2, sets, and Asahi, 3, spikes.

In terms of getting his hitters hitting at 100%. Kageyama doesn't gauge his hitters as he tends to sets where he thinks the ball should be instead of where his hitters like to hit or where their most optimal at hitting the ball. Suga, adjusts his sets to put his hitters in their best positions for hitting while Kageyama makes his hitters adjust to his sets hence why they aren't hitting at 100% majority of the time.

the reason that hearing "if our spikers can hit at 100% capacity then they can compete with most blocks in their way" is like a groundbreaking thing for kageyama to hear is because he tries to do too much when the going gets tough. as seen in the last episode, he kept speeding his sets up and trying to break through seijoh's blocks with his talent rather than give sets that make the most of his teammate's abilities and letting them carry more of the weight in a game.

I KNOW WE ARE ALL APPRECIATING SUGA BUT I WANNA ADD MORE INTO THAT. He’s so reliable. Fyi, Vic, he’s the oldest member of the Karasuno and the vice captain. He’s not strict like Daichi but he for sure is someone you’ll respect as well because he respects you first. It’s just so emotional how he takes care of Kageyama, which is the youngest member, and how he makes sure that he’s not there to take away anything from the latter, but to be a support, a pillar. Suga is the kind of senpai that Kageyama has needed since then. The one that will guide him to a better direction as a player. Our first year setter just needed someone and im so happy that they got each other’s back. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

Plus, if you do a watch-along style thing, you can't pause it and talk since it'll fuck up the timing for everyone. The conversation between Kageyama and Ennoshita on the bench was groundbreaking for Kageyama because it was the tipping point in his shift of perspective as a setter. From back in middle school to this game, whenever Kageyama was pressured during a game all he could think of was what HE could do individually as a setter to turn the flow of the match around - and his main solution was to go for speedy, hard to hit sets that most of the Karasuno hitters aren't able to hit very well (other than Hinata). Ennoshita pointed out to Kageyama that if Kageyama instead fully trusted his hitters and just focused on giving them the sets that complemented their skillset the best - they'd be able to get past the blocks because all the hitters on Karasuno are talented in their own way (Asahi's power, Tanaka's tooling, Tsukishima's height). This is something that Oikawa also pointed out last episode or the one before that - just to further highlight how good of a setter he is to be able to notice what was going on despite not even really knowing the Karasuno hitters very well.

At this point in Kageyama's game, he likes to put the tosses in the place he believes is optimal with the least blocks, or highest chances of hitting towards an area that is open on the other side. The conversation is groundbreaking for because Ennoshita is driving Kageyama to the conclusion of taking the hitter more into account, accommodating them so that they could "fight in mid-air" with sets they're more comfortable with. He's dictating where they should hit, when Ennoshita is saying he needs to give them some freedom and that they're all pretty advanced and can make some of those decisions.

My interpretation of the 100% comment from Ennoshita is that Kageyama is recognizing that Sugawara is bringing out that 100% from the other players through means of communication and overall positive energy. I think that line will be much clearer in the next episode (which btw i’m so excited for that reaction bc episode 22 is my favorite of season 1) but basically Kageyama is realizing that Sugawara is pulling out potential from the other players in ways that Kageyama had never thought about doing before. Like you said it’s the IQ vs EQ thing and this is what Kageyamas realizing in that scene. It also goes back to the whole “king” mentality thing with Kageyama, he’s realizing that he needs to give his hitters the tosses they want rather than doing what he thinks is best for them. (also this is just my interpretation based off of what i know so i could be completely wrong here)

During the last substitution when Suga is talking to Kageyama, Suga was about to say "Go win this", but he catches himself and instead says "Lets win this". Basically, it's almost like Suga mentally is about to give up on the setter position, or knowing that he's being replaced/outshined, so he passes that role to Kageyama entirely: "Go win this instead of me" or "Go win this with Karasuno, I'm not the main setter anymore". However, as I said, he doesn't say "Go win this" out loud. Instead he says "Lets win this", [we] [together], which is a more inclusive statement. They as a team should win this. Suga says it in a way that shows that he's still part of the team, and he's not giving up on his position.

It's groundbreaking for Kageyama because he's never thought about what best fits his hitters. He's always analyzing and *deciding* in the moment what the best set for the situation is, even to the point that he's deciding what kind of hit should be made, thus robbing his hitters of their own agency. Basically, he sets the ball to the place *he* thinks will best result in his hitter getting the kill, rather than considering the idiosyncrasies and preferences of his spikers (which is what Oikawa does so expertly). If you remember, there has been - and will continue to be - a lot of talk about how Oikawa makes his hitters their best. Oikawa gives them the ball that will best maximize their skillset, rather than demanding they hit the ball to a specific location.

I think this episode has had the only translation issue that I’ve personally had upon rewatch so far... when Suga talks to the coach after switching back with Kageyama, it’s sightly more accurate to say that Coach Ukai uses the words “next time” and Sugawara was super happy to hear that he would likely get to play again. I kind of worried that the meaning might not hit the same way. But judging by your reaction, I think the feeling got through after all 🥰

When they are talking to Kageyama about Suga helping everyone hit at 100%. I think he’s referring to the fact that Suga isn’t just worrying about passing to the attackers for the best outcome, but he’s considering everyone on his team and their position and how to help them. This is a big thing for Kageyama because before joining the team his world was very small, he only ever really worried about himself. After joining the team his world got a little bigger, with him taking into consideration for Hinata and all of the attackers on his team. Now, after watching Suga interact with the team he’s starting to understand the benefits of communicating and considering everyone on his team. This shows great personal growth for him and it always made me so happy to see that he’s understanding the value of having a team. Ok, long paragraph later, I just wanted to say Congratulations on the new channel! I subscribed as soon as you said too 😁 I love your reaction videos! Watching them every Tuesday puts a smile on my face. Also it’s my birthday and getting to watch a new reaction video made today a great birthday!

“Only one of them can actually get what they want” -> that about sums up most of the games in this show :(
