USB microscope 1600x from China - review, footage and modification

First thoughts after a few attempts to use it. Had to make my own stand to get any picture out of this. Should have chosen a lower magnification model...

    In case anyone wonders, the divisions of the grid are 0.1mm x 0.1mm, i.e., 100 microns per division. That means that this microscope is good enough to see the details of the edge of a dime, but not good enough to see the details of a red blood cell, which has a length of 10 microns (0.01mm).

  • @randomtronic

    The magnification is what you see, thats why I showed the graticule card. In reality, it is not near 1600x. It is the highest magnification available out of all those cheap microscopes. But 1600x is out of reach. This would require VERY expensive optics. 1600x would on borderline of what is possible optically due to visble light wavelength.

    You can get sticky arrows to put on the spot you want to focus on. The other thing is, you can use a toothpick or Bobbie pin to move the item by putting pressure on the toothpick on the table surface right next to the board and gently nudge the edge. I used to solder chips that were the size of glitter on small circuit boards and you have far better control than using your clumsy unsteady fingers.

    I got one of these super cheap usb microscope with great stand (copy of celestron microscope stand with metal pole and fine height adjust). It cost only few bucks more. In addition, I found that if you push focus all the way to low magnification, the clearance beneath microscope is huge - about 5 inches. You can also remove the transparent plastic at end for better clearance. So there is no problem here. Only bad thing I found was that microscope has only 0.3MP sensor, which is unfortunate.

    The stand supplied with this camera is USELESS! The arm is very short and it moves in a 45 degree arc which is very limiting if you need height. To get useful vertical adjustment I suggest this: 1. Place scope and stand on a flat surface like a table top. 2. Hold the base of the stand and push the scope down so the front ring is flat on the table and the arm is parallel with the table top. 3. Tighten the screw on the arm so it's firm and cannot move. 4. Place the stand and scope on top of a pile of thin books or wood pieces and adjust the height by adding or removing books/wood pieces.

    Curtis Porter what problems are you experiencing? this should get detected as USB pnp device, it was rather problem free under windows. Is your mac detecting it but struggling with driver? It should technically work as a cheap webcam from computers point of view. I doubt you will get that software to run on mac though, but that should not be an issue. I personally don't use it at all.

    jpmvidal has already said it, but I will repeat my own version anyway: Each division on the grid on screen at 11:26 is 0.1 mm, and there are 5 divisions on the screen representing 0.5mm accross the width of the screen in landscape mode. Now, the smartphone screen width in landscape mode is about 10cm (the height in portrait mode), which is 100mm. so how many times does 0.5mm fit in 100mm? 200x. What you have mr randomtronic isn't a 1600x microscope, but a 200x microscope that is intentionally mislabeled as 1600x. This thing doesn't have the CCD nor the optics quality for such a high magnification. You'd need to spend hundreds of dollars to get a true 1600x microscope.

  • @randomtronic

    @randomtronic

    7 жыл бұрын

    +Inimbrium Absolutely agree. By no means I am claiming that it is 1600x - I am just calling it by it's name on the box. I have purposely showed the division and image from it so you can see for yourself the picture and judge if it is what you want. I also said, that it all depends on what screen you view it on, so on a small screen the magnification will be smaller than on big screen. But in reality even on a tv size you will not see more detail, because it has a very poor sensor with low res. Now, in terms of if it is re-badged 200x - here I must disagree to a degree. So there are many variations of this, some 50x, some 200x, some 1200x and so on. Highest one I found was 1600x, and bought it. Each one of them is different in terms of optics (all are poor, but higher mag models really do have higher mag than lower mag models.) If you compared side by side the 200x model and 1600x model, than the difference would be clear. In reality, the 200x model does like 50x or maybe less. And the 1600x does as you said about 200x. Also, the 1600x has only 1 focal point (and very short) while the 200x has about 8cm or more of focal length and 2 focal points (1 higher and 1 lower mag) Hope this clears it out: no, it is not 1600x, it was labelled 1600x. As far as magnification you can see for yourself in the video. Take care! :)

  • @Inimbrium

    @Inimbrium

    7 жыл бұрын

    So what I'm alluding to is that there's no point in you buying a similar microscope with 'less' magnification. They're all exactly the same, but when sales decreased some wiseguy in china decided to create a variation of 'magnifications', all higher than the original in order to boost sales. I bet all of these microscopes are 200x, even ones looking slightly different as they would replace the outer casing, again to boost sales. I've come to notice this phenomenon a lot in cheap ebay china goods, especially electronics. But maybe I'm wrong. If you get another and it truly has a different magnification, post another vid :D

  • @randomtronic

    @randomtronic

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi, no, you are not correct. Although in reality none of them has the clamed magnification, the optics are different inside in different models. I will try to get one that has 200x and show this on vid. Sensor and case are identical though. But it's not a case of simple re-badging. 200x when you do same calculation for divisions visible on phone screen will be a lot lower than 800x for example. Also, as i mentioned before, all models except 1600x have 2 magnification levels (focal points), while 1600 has only 1, very short one. With 200x you can have as much as 10-12 cm distance from object, with 1600x its not possible, you have only about 1 cm max. Hence they are not the same. Hope this explains it better.

  • @Inimbrium

    Inimbrium yep, that's exactly that. you have high magnification with one shorter focal length, and lower magnification, wider angle at greater focal length. this microscope has only one, very short one.

    Don't let this review, or the comments underneath put you off this type of digital microscope. I have a 1000x model from amazon that cost about £20.00. And the image quality is much more clear than the one shown in this video. Also I didn't have any issues with the stand. It is sturdy and I have always managed to get it into the desired position. Great video though, I found it very insiteful.

    It seems, they dont know difraction theory of microscope - in optical range can't be magnification above 100. Easy to understand - niked eye allow to see 100 um object, but if object shorter, than wavelength, you will see only diffraction picture. Since green light is about 0.5 um, it gives magnification 200. But need to take into account, to see object about 0.5 um, you have to collect ALL beams in 2 pi steradian, what practically cant do.. Yes, you can multiply numerical magnification, but this is only mathematics. Physics says no such magnification until you use X-rays.. 1600x can give only electronic microscope

    if you want to buy one of these microscopes, you need to purchase a separate actual stand like your makeshift one. But i think you missed the whole point about that microscope. The way these USB microscopes works is that you put them at some distance from the object and then use the wheel to focus. The major issue on this particular model is the extremely shallow depth of field. On the other hand, its extremely cheap stuff, so dont expect miracles.

    Sachith Amarakoon that is part of the problem with this - at high magnification can't touch the microscope. Even floor vibration can take things out of focus. Touching the microscope would probably take object way out of view.

    is this true it magnifies 1600x ?

  • @randomtronic

    @randomtronic

    8 жыл бұрын

    That is a complex question. Technically yes. But also no. Let me elaborate :) There are 3 factors affecting how much it will magnify: 1.Optics (limited due to diffraction, max about 1500x) 2. Sensor resolution - in this case 640x480, so not that great, but does the job. Higher resolution sensor would provide more detail, so you could "zoom in " further 3. Most importantly - the screen you are watching this on. On my phone the magnification will be much smaller compared to when connected to 60 inch TV screen. So technically, you can get 1600x from it. In practice, I have not actually measured this, but probably it is somewhere close to the number. Maybe I should measure this, but then, what screen do I use? On the phone it will be maybe 300x measured on phone screen and compared to the sample. but then the same image later on youtube on 21 inch monitor may be somewhere around 1200x. So... you get the idea :)

    Just a word to the unwise. These Chinese USB Microscopes have a real magnification of 25x to 40x only. They are in essense single lens webcams. they will NOT magnifiy to 100x, 200x, 500x or anything above. It is false advertisement. As proof, even the most expensive professional compound optical lab microscopes, costing thousands of dollars are able to reliably magnify to around 1000x, due to the restriction imposed by the wavelength of light itself. Physics itself limits optical magnification. Search "microscope" on Wikipedia for full explanation.
