USB 3.1 & Type C - It's finally here!

Ғылым және технология

USB Type C is something I have looked forward to for a LONG time... Will it and the new 3.1 standard blow us away with performance gains and quality of life improvements?

I wouldn't say "It's finally here" forreal until it's common on motherboards (versus having to dig to find a mobo with it) and there's more than 1 port on a motherboard. ATM it feels the same as when motherboards started coming with Thunderbolt - only like 1 at a time, rare, then they disappeared.

gamerpaddy The standard defines 100 Watts power delivery only at 20 Volts. Which only results in 5 Amps. Which still gives you a warm plug but you should be fine. Quote from Wikipedia: "Devices can request higher currents and supply voltages from compliant hosts - up to 2 A at 5 V (for a power consumption of up to 10 W), and optionally up to 3 A or 5 A at either 12 V (36 W or 60 W) or 20 V (60 W or 100 W)."

hpekristiansen Pure copper maybe, but do you really think there is pure copper in a cheap wire? It seems to be pushing the electrical resistance of cheaper alloys used in most wires. Silver would simply be an insurance of low electrical resistance, as long as you can trust *its* quality that is :P

Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support ONLY USB 3.0 at 5 Gbps. Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support BOTH USB 3.0 at 5 Gbps and USB 3.1 at 10 Gbps. Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support ALL USB 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 (Thunderbolt 3.0 at 40 Gbps) When you buy a new computer, you make sure to look for the right USB-C ports speed you want for your needs. USB-C is backward compatible to old USB 2.0 & 1.0.

If it has a C port it can not be USB 3.0. The C port is introduced with USB 3.1 which also adds the protocol to negotiate who is the master and who is the slave. USB 3.1, gen 1 has the negotiation protocol but does not increase the speed over 3.0. USB. The MacBook is USB 3.1, gen 1 with the C port. USB 3.1, gen 2 adds the higher 10 Gbps speed. With a type-C port you must have at least USB 3.1, gen 1. You may have gen 2 and you may also have other protocols such as thunderbolt 3. display port, or some future protocol. I believe USB 3.1 also allows the type-A port to be used on the host computer and fully supports a type-A to type-C cable. I believe without USB 3.1, a type-A to type-C cable is only supported with the type-C being used on a slave device, like a disk drive.

I know this video is really old but let me just point out another draw back to TB is that it's PCI-E which is a HUGE security risk. You can literally plug in a malicious piece of hardware and do a memory dump because direct system bus access. Among other things. People have found ways to inject rootkits via TB because again...direct system bus access. It basically is the same problem firewire had all those years ago.

No one copied apple, Apple along with Intel, Microsoft and others were all working on Type-C, USB & Thunderbolt invented by Intel will use the new connection as well as Apple's display port will also use type-c as and guess the reversal design was Apple's contribution, and HDMI will follow supporting type-c on TVs. Type-C is all about one connector to rule them all.

One thing that I think will be confusing is the power thing. I looked it up a little while ago, and the 100W happens at 20V. I think it has a few different voltages that it operates on in order to deliver 100W. I still find it hard to believe that a connector that small can deliver 5A at 20V though. Unless they are using many pins for power, I don't think that 5A can pass through that thing without melting it.

pcfreak1992 Having it reversible is just a common sense addition. Mini and Micro B both suck pretty bad, with Micro pretty much being worn out within a couple of months. There are literally a dozen reasons why Type C is better.

SpoonLinks well yeah, I agree with you. It's a nice little new plug, but most people just praize it for its ability to be plugged in both ways, which for me wouldn't be THE killer argument.

enginesnblades I don't know how you use your devices, but I used to have a Nexus 4 with Micro USB that still had a solid connection before it died due to a different reason. And I am not saying the old standard is better or anything, I am just saying that the ability to be inserted both ways is not my killer argument, why I would want a new standard.

USB-C speeds vary depending on the Mac model you choose: Some computers, which have USB-C ports, support ONLY USB 3.0 at 5 Gbps.

Non C usb plugs are pretty easy to get right first time. with horizontal ports hold the cable so that the usb logo (the tree with the circle, triangle and square) is facing upwards. with vertical ports twist the cable so the logo aligns with the top of the motherboard. not having to look for the logo is an advantage - but you don't have to make plugging in earlier USB cables any more painful than it has to be.

Type C is crap. Really only 1 advantage. You can put it in any way. Standard (real) USB can do anything it can, and it's speed will continue to progress. Type C is only good on a phone, but is crap on the other end. A ton of adapters are a pain. And what's wrong with the Samsung USB 3.1 thing? It is completely backwards compatible, and not that bad if you ask me.
