My grandparents actually considered getting one of these and I showed them just exactly how easy it is by pulling out one of my identical SanDisk 64GB sticks and dropping Xubuntu on it. I can appreciate whatever mild scripting they did and setup that they included (which most distros already have anyways), but the absolutely extreme markup they do for nothing but their own Linux distro and a cheap flash drive is insane and absolutely predatory. I also feel that this is basically an ethical violation of what Linux was built on to just charge for completely non-transformative versions of Linux

I've been giving grans elementary OS lately, and they absolutely love it. I charge $69 for in-home backup/restore, install and training, and my customers have been super happy about it. elementary OS is so clean and user friendly, and super low on resource usage. They feel like they've got a brand new pc. The difference is that I'm with them through the entire process, and I'm only a phone call away if they have any issues. SSDs are nothing now like $20 brand new, I mean sure you're going to be limited by SATA II, but in a use case like this where the computer is newer than 06' there's an upgrade path that would be dirt cheap and fine for normal grandma use cases, especially if you're going to have to help anyway, at least you can do the labor so she can keep using the same software she's used to, hypothetically speaking. There was an older lady I used to work with who had an all in one with an AMD E2 that she bought I put her together something like what I just stated above and she loves it. If I were setting up linux, I would charge for the service and not the OS. Also, they are taking advantage of the elderly who don't know anything about computers. Thus, for instance, you must make the source code available to the users of the program as described in the GPL, and they must be allowed to redistribute and modify it as described in the GPL." If he had just created a Live USB with persistence (I would have done that, though I didn't know about the disadvantages), then yeah that shouldn't have taken that long. But instead he tried to match Xtra PC's setup, by going through the installation process and choosing the USB stick as a target... which depending on the speed of the drive, can be very slow. Though the drive he was using _was_ -a high end GPU- probably decently fast. Eh.

I suppose Linus' argument was that an older person or someone not tech savvy wouldn't know how to go through the process of making one, or setting up a linux distro. Or just not have the time to do so. But considering I just bought a 64Gb usb for £11 [$15] and this 'product' is likely a preconfigured linux distro with preinstalled apps that you can get and do for free, you can imagine how much they're making in profit. There's also that this is quite literally a scam. The way it's advertised is to make the hardware run better, not install a new, less taxing operating system. Besides, if you bought this for gaming - unless you know how to use wine and the like, you're games are going to run equally slow, or slower anyways. A scam is selling a product that is advertised as doing something it doesnt do and quite simply, this exorbitantly priced product does not do as advertised - improve the performance of your hardware. It simply reduces the load on that hardware a bit.
