USB 3.0 Drive Group Test

Ғылым және технология

In this video I compare three 64 GB USB 3.0 drives - with surprising results! The drives tested are a Corsair Flash Voyager GT, a Transcend JetFlash 700, and a HyperX FURY.

    It comes as absolutely no surprise to me that the Corsair wins. They've used that same design for many years, and for good reason, because it works! Back in the day I purchased a 512MB one, and it was hands down the FASTEST flash drive I had even seen! I even emailed the company claiming I lost the cap and they mailed another one right out to me. Corsair has always, always made great stuff, and this comes as no surprise. I've also got you beat, I have a 32MB flash drive. It's so old it actually (since it was based off of the SD card standard) has a write-protect switch on the side. I have not just one but two!

    Moore's law has been surprising us for over 20 years in home PC use. USB drives are no exception. One of the most useful usb drives I've had was one that had an additional micro sd slot on the case that allowed the micro SD to be read as an additional drive. Made file transfer/sharing so much easier.

    Although I've had USB 3.0 ports for some time, it's only relatively recently in the past few months I've invested in 16GB Sandisk USB 3.0 drive (the model escapes my mind). It's more or less because it's still surprisingly not that well-adopted. I have other devices that are still only 2.0, and have had a few clients who only have USB 2.0 ports on their computers. I recently bought a cheap 2.5" 3.0 external enclosure off of Amazon when I bought a Samsung 850 Evo 500Gb to replace my HyperX 3K 240GB, which works perfectly fine--didn't see the point in throwing it away. You know, it was annoying when I worked for Jobcentre Plus, and having a lack of access to cloud storage. I used to have to pull together resources for marketing materials at home, and email them to my work email. Even access to USB storage was restricted. Still, I'm a huge proponent of optical and flash-based storage. I don't like putting all of my eggs in one basket with regards to storage, and that's why I think those who say such things are dead, are a little short-sighted.

  • @ExplainingComputers

    @ExplainingComputers

    8 жыл бұрын

    +joey serenko A good resolution, in both senses! But it may mean I would have to shoot in 4K! :) I have become so to used to cropping 1080p Prores in 720p post, especially for table top shots. And then there is also the issue of what resolution I would grab computer screens at -- 1080p would clearly work, but I am also aware of the people watching my stuff on smartphones and 7 inch tablets. But the direction of travel here has to be toward 1920x1080 . . .

  • @ExplainingComputers

    @ExplainingComputers

    8 жыл бұрын

    +joey serenko I still really like 1280x720 as a resolution -- it has lots of benefits (as I kind of hint at above!), esp for the web, and in terms of file storage and editing on a lower spec machine. I currently edit on a 1280x1024 monitor, which full-screens 1280x1024 very well indeed. You will see this in next week's video. People forget that many cinemas still project 2K (ie 2048 pixels horizontally), so we really do not need 1920x1080 for TV and web use! I always prefer good 720p to bad 1080p footage -- and there is a lot of the latter online. Most consumer cameras and smartphones that record 1080p footage do also not actually resolve 1080 lines of resolution (ie the format is 1080, but the footage certainly is not). As you have probably guessed, this issue is a hobby-horse of mine! :) We must also not forget that what really matters is content, regardless of resolution. It is not that many years since all KZread footage was 320x240 pixels . . .

    The chip speed also depends on if it's single layer bit storage, double layer or triple layer bit storage. Single layer is the fastest, but takes up more space to layout on a chip, double layer is a bit slower because it stacks bits on top of each other but you save space on the chip which gives you more capacity for the same size chip and a single layer, but can also limit life time of memory and if a double layer chip fails in a bit layer then you lose access or corrupt data in larger quantities where a single layer bit could be compensated for with parity bits, double layer bits can cause a larger amount of bits to be lost. My terminology maybe a little off but I hope you get what I am trying to describe. More layers, slower access time to write and read.

    To me the next exciting thing is the M.2 which will replace those sata drive cables slots (bottlenecks) on hard disk. There are a lot of speed advantages here too! Thank you Chris! Rich

  • @Kevin-wo3kp

    @Kevin-wo3kp

    8 жыл бұрын

    +MrMoonpie001 Yes and No. M.2 and U.2 will use an pcie lane and therefore share its bandwidth with any other gear on those pipes. I had to decide between having a video card by itself on the pcie slots or sharing it with a U.2. It's hard to pay top price for a decent video card - only to have its processing input/output power halved because another device shares the bandwidth. When we can buy a motherboard (mobo) that has a dedicated pathway/pipelines for each slot can we can get the best out of our kit. As yet that's not possible.

  • @MrMoonpie001

    @MrMoonpie001

    Good and relevant points Kevin. It would be nice if all the techknowledge improved at the same pace but that will never be the case. There are also large swings on the performance end on the M.2 compatible peripherals, things that can take advance of the speed and others that show no performance gains. That is the big dilemma at this moment with much of the technology. It seems harder in someways to upgrade without rebuilding everything and then it is still questionable of the results. Video cards are a really good example of this. Thanks for your comments. Rich

Nice video though I have three comments (i) Only three brands were tested which is far from being close to what already there in the market (but it's fine with me since I have the Transcend one, with only 32GB though. However, if I show software running in 1080p, people viewing the videos at 720p, and certainly 480p and 360p will not be able to read the text onscreen/etc. So I would welcome wider views on this one.

    This is a good, well produced, cautionary tale typical of many things in the computer world: not everything is created equally - so buyer beware and do your research as Christopher shows how! For what it's worth - and not every device can be tested in any group test - my preference for solid state storage is Samsung. I remember USB3 coming out 5 years ago (see Christopher's video of that time) and now USB3.1 is out but it appears it is not economically viable for computer suppliers to produce/sell. Maybe it will take another 5 years.... Storage technology is a lot slower than Moore's law. However, it is my prediction we will have generous storage (2Tb) built into wrist-wear with password-protected Near Field Comms (NFC) for data transfer in the next 5 years. Christopher makes an important comment about the convenience and security of having your data with you - and a brief comment is made about storing on the cloud as well. Professional photographer's have a mantra which states anything not stored in three separate places is not stored at all. The agony of lost data is unique so don't buy cheap! If your data is your income then you can't afford to ignore Christopher's other video on security storage/tough stick drives. Over this Christmas holiday I did a personal data audit and reduced my storage needs from 6Gb to 1.5Gb. Not only am I saving money but time as well. Suddenly it has become easier to file new things away, too.

    8 жыл бұрын

    +ExplainingComputers Actually, as personal as a clear-out always is, it might be useful to have a video on how to do a personal data audit....? I haven't seen anything similar yet on YT. As a brief guide, my policies/procedures were: - All family photos to be stored in 3 places - All saved websites older than 2 years binned regardless - there's newer, better stuff out there - All pictures (not photos) less than 35kb gets binned - then a physical look-see to determine if I really need the rest of the pictures and sorted into folders - All duplicate MP3s are binned and the MP3 repository is backed up - Software not used in 3 years gets binned - Everything of dubious nature gets binned (pirated, virus, trial software) - All bought software is duplicated separately with serial number notes etc - All my legally owned pdfs are stored in a Library Classification folder system (yes, I have this in empty folder format - it's legal) So the end result is that everything I have is legal and filed in a system that makes sense to add to. Next year I will do a similar audit to remove mainly old website files.

But this may be because you can feel the heat conducting through the rubber, whereas there is an air gap between the circuits and the outer case on the other two. But I have also know USB 2.0 drives get warm too. If you have Sandisk speeds from a real-life test, please do post them here. The more info people have, the better. :)

    I bought a 128GB Sandisk for £20 on amazon uk. I was moving 100gb of movies from an external harddrive through my z97 motherboard to the usb stick. Only got 5.6mbps transfer? it is a usb 2.0 but it was painful.

    +Winstan USB drives can be soooooo slow as you note. This is why I did a real-world test on these devices.

    ExplainingComputers Yeah I enjoyed the video. I think my transfer was bottle necked by the external hdd. Still better than using the cloud for anything!

    I don't want my stuff on the Internet... I want to have a physical copy in my hand. Also on the USB drives you have, I have seen ALOT of them that says USB 3.0/2.0 BUT you have to be careful look on the back because alot of them in SMALL print say drive is USB 2.0 but compatible with USB 3.0!!! I went Thur looking at about 20 in Wal-M**T here in US and all said USB 3.0 but on back in small print said drive was USB 2.0

    Mike Flynn They are backwards compatible, they are 3.0 but they can work on a computer/laptop that has only a USB 2.0 Port.

    Bm_508 yes they are backwards compatible, but you didn't read what i said, they claim to be USB 3.0 when they are only USB 2.0 devices, yes they will work although slow on a USB 3.0 port, but do not support the USB 3.0 speed,. manufacturer's are tricking people into buying older hardware with new packaging and saying USB 3.0 but if you read the small print on back it say it's a USB 2.0 device!!! now that not fare to people who don't know better and see USB 3.0 on the front and just assume thats what they are buying. BTW I've been working on, building, programming computer for 35 years I know hardward at the base level down to the electrical leavels, use to build computers from chips on breadboards. i find it very upsetting how companies have reworded computer terms to meet thier selling needs, like a megabyte, it's 1024 not 1000..... gigabyte you buy 32 gig memory stick or hdd ssd, it's only 28 gig... due to rounding numbers they say... ripoff.

    I have to add, Not ALL USB 3.0/ Manufacturers are USB 2.0 most are USB 3.0. you have to look on back unless stated on front of package to make sure it is indeed USB 3.0 and not just 3.0 compatible. i have a very nice new USB 3.0 32 gig stick i just purchased for $14 U.S. made by PNY.

    You need to also test copying small files (4K random write). For instance, try copying all the files from inside an XP ISO to a 'fast' USB 3 drive. Sandisk Extreme 64GB (rated 245/190MB/s) - 1:45 minutes Lexar P20 (rated 400/270MB/s) - 45 minutes!!! Copying large files to the Lexar is faster than the SanDisk, but when you need to copy lots of smaller files, then the Lexar is very slow! rmprepusb.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/beware-of-this-fast-usb-30-flash-drive.html

    it would be a good idea to crack them open and see which nand flash is actually fitted. There are far less nand manufacturers - the outside lables don't manufacture the actual flash. I doubt if they are responsible for the firmware at all...

    +ExplainingComputers Agreed, but for the learning experience one has to take some things apart sometimes. I'll try and search if someone else has done it. The web is full of people dropping brand new phones for zero knowledge gain. Education for what specialy to look would be great. is there any hint from outside or the USB descriptors which could tell this differences in advance? SD cards have the class rating - which if not faked should tell. comparison are only worth if the model - exact part number - is available. i have seen it India that Samsung SD cards have 'in' in the product code. this invalidates all tests others may have done. with such a small change even a genuine manufacturer can change the contents. not that they do, but they could.

    I prefer the corsair since it doesn't show the capacity on it. It reduce the temptation to get it stolen from you... 64 gB is not cheap you don't want to scream how big it is straight on the very package :P

    This is bullshit comercial. It is trick. If you had formated your USB in NTFS file system you will know that the speed the windows is showing is not real and when it comes to "5 sec remaining" time you will wait that "5 sec" a while. On NTFS USB speed windows actualy shows the cash of the HDD or SDD at the beggining, but if you transfer a video file sized od several GB the speed will slowly decresing and at the at the end will shows the real speed. Real speed test is when your USB is on default format FAT32, then Windows shows the real speed. Also you can do test with "h2testw" program for USB testing, it shows precisly the real speed. ;)
