Glad you liked it! Yes, the Somaliland system with political parties is really interesting and has worked reasonably well. There is a problem now, I understand, when new parties have won the right to take the old parties' places. But the model has been successful enough that it was used by Puntland last year.

I am very proud to say that I was born in Somaliland and a citizen of the United States of America. Very informative video and simply the truth, thanks for sharing. In Somaliland the political parties are open up every ten years, though limited to three political parties at the end, it allows new parties to come out and that process is actually happening right now.

So many countries in Africa had political systems imposed on them by colonial powers, and I think it's great to see a successful, truly African system emerge. Somaliland is not a perfect place - I don't think anyone thinks that - but I've been impressed by how committed everyone I speak to is to having strong civil institutions and a democratic government. If those can be put in place, there's no limit to how far Somaliland can go!
5:43 I'm interested to hear your reasoning here. My understanding (admittedly just what my high school teachers said) has always been that the United States of America were conspicuously and intentionally modeled after the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic seems to have been a true republic by just about any reasonable metric. While the Republic was a total sham toward the end, it didn't start that way, and even improved steadily with more rights being granted to the poor over time before eventually declining again in what we call the Late Republican era. That said, as I wrote this I can't help but remember Women's Suffrage which I don't think existed in the Roman Republic and only forget about because of how uninterested most Roman Historians were in it so they don't talk about it. EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I loved this video in every way. I only ask this question specifically because I want to hear more. I'm not intending it as an argumentative point, so apologies if my wording came off that way.
@FredoRockwell
Жыл бұрын
So glad you liked the video. Since Rome created the Republic I guess it was arguably first. The Roman Republic wasn't really a democratic republic as we tend to think of today though. There wasn't a king, but it was more rule by powerful families than a democracy. Ancient Athens it's arguably a better example of democracy, although it too was far from perfect. I guess when I wrote that line I was referring to modern times (as in 1600 onwards). I should have considered my wording more carefully!!
Masha allah somaliland guul iyo gobanimoo lojojin mayo ciid kasta oo kasohorjeda qadiyada iyo qaranimada qaranka somaliland Somaliland waxay ledahay haal cadowuu wayo wa somalikushega konfureed Xadudaha somaliland wa muqadiis wa lamaa tabtaan Ciidanka qaranka somaliland waxan leyahay guul iyo qaranimada habalyo habalyo habalyo habalyo habalyo

The UCID party from Somaliland may be my favorite political party in the world, not because it is the most similar to the policies I support, but because they apparently got influenced by the Finnish Social Democratic Party. They took the position that good ideas know no borders and that they can take many ideas from a party from a completely different country and apply it somewhere else in the world. That is objectively a good thing as they don't try to lie to people that ideas from other countries are bad or contra to the values of Somaliland.
Great video fredo. Be weary of any people claiming to be from Somaliland but against its self governance and path to recognition. Mostly trolls from the other side.
