I am Kurdish myself. But Kurdistan unlike somaliland, is not an independent state. We kurds just wanted autonomy, to be part of our respective countries but as an autonomous region. But after the US invasion of Iraq and The massacres committed against our people by our own government. We want independence and have fought for it for a century but it has increased the past 17 years. I hope Kurdistan can become one day an independent Muslim state. InShaAllah it can happen. But I am sceptical.

When he talks about somali government he making it seem like the somali people had something to do with. If me the percent or amount that was involved in the suffering of somaliland. The somali people have suffered under the somali government not just somaliland. If you want to talk about who suffered the most we can agree to disagree. Suffering is suffering. This man is making it seem like all of somalia was involved in their suffering or all somali people have to do with it or wore complicit if the death of the somaliland.

So what is their claim to independence? That the whole south plotted against them during the civil war? Yes, Siad Barre was a power hungry mad man who killed anyone and everyone to remain in power, but that doesn't mean all of the southern clans favored Siad Barre' s regime. As of matter of fact, the SNM(now known as Somaliland wasn't the only clan who fought against and sought the overthrow of Barre' s regime. The SSDF(Maajertan), USC(Hawiye), SPM(Ogaden) rebel groups all fought against Siad Barre s regime. The SNM wasn't a major force in the civil war, they were easily crushed by Barre s forces. All Somalias agree that it was primarily the USC rebel group, led by General Aidid, that ousted his regime from Mogadishu. Do you know which clans were favored in Barre s regime and held the highest ranks within his government and military(this was after the Ogaden war, when people were critical of Barre s government. Barre in turn, was very paranoid of everyone in his cabinet. During the early phase of his leadership, he was non partisan when it came to clan selection in government and military positions.) They consisted of mainly three clan groups, Marehan, Ogaden, and Dhuulbaante>(keep this clan in mind, as this will show the hypocrisy of the Somaliland government). During the war, those three clans were the majority in his army and led the battle against the SNM movement. The leveled Hargesia to the ground, but you can also attribute that to the rebel group hiding amongst the population. Their were also heinous crimes against humanity committed by the Barre regime against the people of Hargeisa. Now let's fast forward to the current state of affairs by the Somaliland government. Somaliland wants independence from the South, they claim all of the South plotted against them during the civil war. They claim and rightfully so(although under suspicious circumstances, such as Al-Shabaab leadership top leadership consisting of those of origin from Somaliland, hence why they may never attack them) , Somaliland is peaceful and has a stable government(you can argue that it is in fact corrupt, due to two sub clans uniting, keeping one sub clan(Geeljiire) from power.), and checks all the marks for independence. Ok now let's show their hypricosy. Somaliland is now claiming origin to the region of SSC, Sool, Sanag, and Cayn. Have you asked yourself, which clan mainly consists of that region? It is in fact the Dhuulbaante clan, which were overwhelmingly present along with Marehan in Barre s army. The very same ppl who were supposedly slaughtering innocent Somalilanders. Now because it's convienent, they welcome this very same clan into their government, and call for its people to integrate into their government, all in the name of land grab. If they claim succession and win succession, this will encourage regional semi autonomous such as Puntland, etc to claim succession. This is a dangerous precedent that will further divide the country. You know nothing about Somali history and yet you champion a cause you know nothing about. Stick to the affairs of your country.

This is BS. I have lived in somaliland for years learned in its schools and worked in its society. And i kow there is no reason for its independance. Ethnicity and culture are the same to Somalia. That land has unityed longer then it has been sperated(so siting the breif period of independance when it was still colonizes)So it has little to no history of independance. The "state" barely has enough reasources of its own like farm land and freash water sources, thats a big problem especially with the fact that global warming is only gonna make the droughts worse.if it was independant it would need to import everything and in return only have their small pocket of oil to export (maybe the fish exports might help but somaliland is too weak to protect is water borders). It would make Somalia's even worse and might lead to more seperatist movements. Worse of all this might weaken Somalia to the point where alshabab might be able to regain some stregnth. If Somaliland has benefited alot from being a defacto state.

Somali Republic means five regions of Somali an ethnic group. these are the five regions - British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, French Somaliland, the Somali West in the Ethiopian Empire, and the Northern Frontier District in the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya at the present day know as Republic of Somaliland, Djibouti, Somalia, DDSI, and NFD-Garissa so when the mission of Great Somali Republic was failed after the several years of the unite in the early 1960 . The Republic Of Somaliland in 18th May 1991 return back their freedom so we must say " Somaliland return back their freedom so even if we are respecting the international world borders rule because this a right . Nobody can hide the fact and Somaliland is Nation.

This reporter lacked basic critical and objective questioning of the issue! He was sold a bill of goods! Somaliland is a case pushed by one Somali clan. Somalis are one ethnic group inhabiting large area from now Djibouti to N.E. Kenya to large part of now Ethiopia. This was their undivid land before foreign colonies. While it's true that Somaliland derived from a British protectorate of Somaliland It voluntarily jointed the Italian portion of Somali region as soon as two regions became independent few days apart. Whether it was legally or appropriately done then is simply irrelevant since both parties willingly went ahead with it. People of Somaliland never fought for independent country they fought seeking to overthrow Siad Barre regime, who also fight them so he could keep the power. Yes he was bad dictator and killed propably thousands in both Somaliland region and Eastern/central part of the country where he suspected a tribal based opposition, there was no "genocide!!!" Parts of Hargeisa was briefly bombed in 1988 when SNM rebels entered the city but Hargeisa was not "flattened!" Somaliland authorities repeatedly claim genocide, rape and destruction to gain sympathy and independence but it's fabrication! Siad Barre regime fought with the SNM fighters in cities and areas like Hargeisa, Burco, Berbera many civilians and fighters died and a lot of people where displaced, but both sides understood this was a civil war between government and rebels this was NOT south Somalia invading Somaliland! Somali union was not like Senegambia or Syria-Egypt union These where rather loose federations between two fully independent countries not two regions if same people joining to form one nation right from birth!. State of Texas in the USA was it's own republic for whole 10 years before it joint the US, many now want to get their independence back but can't. Seperation is not something you can do simply by declaring it. One good question reporter failed to ask should've been: Since you have a fully recognized autonomy why do you need independence?
