US troops capture the Rhine bridge at Remagen and liberate Cologne from the Nazis (1945)

This is an excerpt from the film "The Spirit of Liberation": • Spirit of Liberation -...
The Ludendorff Bridge, also known as the Bridge of Remagen, was named after General Erich Ludendorff and commissioned in 1916 during the First World War for military reasons. The double-track railway bridge led across the Rhine between Remagen and Erpel and was the first Allied crossing over the Rhine at the end of the Second World War. In 1945, during the retreat of Army Group B under Field Marshal Walter Model to the right side of the Rhine, all Rhine bridges were to be blown up according to the will of the Wehrmacht leadership. However, not enough explosives were used in the blasting and the bridge was only briefly lifted out of its bearings. Thus the Western Allied troops succeeded in advancing towards the Ruhr area. On 17 March 1945, the bridge finally collapsed, probably due to the failed blasting and the fighting of the previous days.

The Allies captured Cologne. It was enemy territory and not liberated.

@@josephknecht8258 Oh absolutely, here's what Churchill said about this: "We will force this war upon Hitler, whether he wants it or not." - Winston Churchill (1936 broadcast) "Germany's unforgivable crime before WW2 was its attempt to loosen its economy out of the world trade system and to build up its own exchange system from which the world-finance couldn't profit anymore". - Winston Churchill, The Second World War (Bern, 1960) "Germany becomes too powerful. We have to crush it." - Winston Churchill (November 1936 to US-General Robert E. Wood) "The war wasn't only about abolishing fascism, but to conquer sales markets. At 1:04, you see a Jeep named "Toluca." That was director George Stevens' ("Shane," "Giant," "The Diary of Anne Frank") personal ride all the way through Europe while he was on active duty with the U.S. Army. He and his family lived in Toluca Lake, CA. He was one of five top U.S. film directors (Frank Capra -- "It's a Wonderful Life," John Ford -- "Stagecoach," John Huston -- "The Maltese Falcon," and William Wyler -- "The Best Years of our Lives," "The Big Country," "Ben-Hur") who put on the uniform to serve for the duration, making films for and about the U.S. military's operations in Europe and the Pacific. Many top writers, cinematographers, editors, and script writers did the same and served with and under them. Stevens' team filmed many of the scenes of horror at the concentration camps that were subsequently used at the Nuremberg Trials. What you're seeing is Stevens and team doing their work!

The scenes in the camps were taken by Billy Wilder (Some Like it Hot) and back in the US Alfred Hitchcock collaborated to the editing and did some narration. It is said that those scenes were a setup meant to cause indignation in the American public, is it true? I don't know.

I live in Germany near the Rhine and rode my bike past this place last summer. The distance between bridges at this point is around 40 km, so you're out of luck if you want to cross over to the other side, unless you find a ferry. Too bad they didn't rebuild the bridge. Would make life easier to travel to both sides of the river.

The destruction of cities meant that the target was not military but civilian, and that's always been and still is a war crime. More Germans died after the end of the war than during the war, and that is also beyond tolerable and a crime against humanity..

So in your mind what Germany did during WW2 was fine? Look at civilian casualties across Europe and UK. They burnt alive people in furnaces, millions died in concentration camps and they were deliberately eradicating jews, romani people etc. They were nazis man. This evil had to be eradicated.
