Liberation of Paris after four years of Nazi occupation (June to August 1944)
This is an excerpt from the film "The Spirit of Liberation": • Spirit of Liberation -...
Between the 19th and 25th August 1944 during the Second World War and in the course of Operation Overlord, the liberation of Paris took place. The capital of France had been occupied by German troops since June 1940. In mid-August 1944, a general strike set in motion the events of the eventual liberation, and an open revolt by French resistance fighters followed from 19th August. Allied formations advanced towards Paris in support, and soon the German city commander Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated in defiance of explicit orders from Adolf Hitler.

My great grandfather, who was wounded twice, said WWII was the best thing to ever happen to him. He met my great grandmother in Germany after the war.

My Father was there. Thank you, so well done. Bravo.
those german POW were smiling because they knew they would eventually go home. the ones captured in the east by the soviets would either be slaves or dead
keep up the great work. best restored and colorized footage on the internet unlike many other attempts where the color is constantly glitching back to mono or that the only colors in it are glitching blue and orange. this channel's got the best i've seen so far.

It's not 'colourised' footage. It's actual colour footage, shot on colour film of the time.

@@kevinindublin now is it? wow, from what I know, coloured footage at the time was quite rare and expensive, hard to come by, like they were only saved for super or delicately significant or important events, political or religious though I suppose footage of the final days of ww2 in Europe counts as quite significant...
Please don’t block anything with a blurry box. It is important for people to see the actual carnage of war.

My father in law piloted barges into Toulon harbor still mined. This video gives no hint of those mines. He said the French were starved. I'd like to know about those mines.
"Cherbourg streets are a shambles" - Chelsea Football Club's season, mate!
I wish they wouldn't blur the wounded, I know it sounds barbaric, but it is important to see the realities of war and the destruction it causes.
George Stephen's films were already very good but imagine these have been enhanced to HD as well. So fascinating! Makes 80 years ago look like yesterday! We all need to remember though Nazis are back in 2023 within America itself this time - trying to take over. Hitler Tojo and Mussolini would be proud.

15:48 Ernest Hemingway!
The invasion and advance into France might have been much harder without the French Resistance I think.
The veterans on our side said the enemy uniforms were grey. But these seem to be quite green.
I'm guessing most German soldiers were greatful they had been captured and were in camps behind barbed wire, it meant the war was over for them, they'd live through it.
Thanks
But how is Paris and France doing now -all these years after the liberation?
The occupation was obviously carried out by the Nazis but back then and until quite recently the French used to call it “the German Occupation”.

Only the Russians are blamed for the death "missing" of over more than 1 Mio. German POWs. Not to mention of the Mio. killed civilians (starvation) after the unconditional surrender. This is denied history of the winners who "take it all", as the American song states.

Color is so good here really could have been made yesterday. Does make one think - and there's scientists who confirm it now - that we can go backward and forward in time - as time is circular and not linear as we thought. Government knows it's true.

Why do people feel the need to come to these videos and talk about what their family tree did in WW2? Lol.
@sassycat6487

Because it's why we feel such a connection to the war almost 80 years after it ended. Most people who didn't have family in it don't ever think about it or care.
