Liberation of Berlin 1945 - Trümmerfrauen help to rebuild the Capital

This is an excerpt from the film "The Spirit of Liberation": • Spirit of Liberation -...
Berlin lies in ruins after the liberation by the Allies on 2nd May 1945. Months of air raids have destroyed most of the city and the population slowly sets about rebuilding their beloved city. So called "Trümmerfrauen", paid clean-up workers, prisoners of war and conscripted former Nazis were involved in the reconstruction.

Christiane Koerber aus Danzig war meine Mutter. There is a British Red Cross footage trying to reunite families dispersed in Germany. A group of children briefly talk into a camera, their names, where they are from and for whom they are looking for. I cannot remember the title of that documentary. My mother actually found her father through the British Red Cross.

In the Berlin underground stations there were posters with pictures of children and whatever was known of them to identify them. I met one later in Frankfurt who had grown up in a Russian orphanage. He was let out as an adult later when his identity was clear but he never really took root in West Germany. My mother in Berlin had a friend who never wnet into the cellar when the sirenes sounded but took her backpack and went into the underground station. The building came down, she was the only survivor.

When we see black and white newsreels of the wreckage that was Germany in 1945, it's easy to imagine that this was another world. The color film reminds us that we live in the same world as these people did 78 years ago. Now with daily videos from Ukraine, we see that savagery still exists, and civilians still suffer.

Yes but you have to remember that the majority of Germans fled Berlin by the hundreds of thousands while the city was under siege by the Russians. What you're seeing here is the return of those same people who fled their homes in the weeks and months after the wars end. All those returning Germans were registered and quickly put to work by the Allies in the cleanup and rebuild of the city. You can see too from the face that one woman makes towards the camera when she turns her nose up that not all Germans were happy about the presence of the Allies.

The last people from this time are gone now, but I now understand why my grandparents never could speak abaut what happend. They was folish enough to follow this crafty Adolph Hitler. But they did' nt had a chance to change anything. It' s heartbreaking to learn this about our forfathers. I' m grown up in former GDR. But it seems to me that we has the better half of Germany. I don' t can remember any such stories about the russians except for the rapes, which there were on all sides of the allies. It' s schocking and I'm pretty shure that I will have a few nightmares about that. Nether my grandfather nor my granny was fighting in the war. They only was born in the wrong place to a wrong time. And I want to remember that still were jews between this people who was able to hide and survive. They were all treated the same now, like subhumans. Those people in this time did' nt understand anything about human and human rights...

When WW I ended, the Allies felt Germany should pay in many ways for what had happened. They applied reparations that were almost impossible to pay, took away territory from them, and forbade them from ever arming again. German currency became worthless and the country sank into financial abyss. Almost 16 million people had died, and farmland and cities had been destroyed across Europe, and the Allies put the blame squarely on the Germans. It set the stage for Germany to look for some way out, to regain a successful financial footing, and national pride. A decade and a half later, enter Hitler, who defied every tenet of the Versailles Treaty, building a strong military machine, and preaching the superiority of the German people. All this, while the French, British and USA looked on and never raised a finger. Some said that no one had the heart for another fight, so many had died just ten years before. And, they thought that Germany was soundly beaten and would not rise from the rubble. No one foresaw that a personality like the diabolical Hitler would galvanize the Germans into a military machine and Europe would face devastation yet again. It is historically interesting that Germany has been reunited, and has become one of the most successful countries in Europe, 70 years later.

Or the hundreds of thousands of German soldiers who were systematically tortured to death in Russian prison camps or the hundreds of thousands of German women raped or forced into prostitution to survive. Paton was right. We refused negotiations with many German military members who were ready to turn on Hitler including romel and instead brought on the problem of communism for the world. Fact is we should have let the Germans surrender then turn to the east and defeat the communist with the help of the German army instead we killed hundreds of thousands including civilian population and plunged many millions to death and poverty under communist rule.

Yes, that's right, because contrary to the arrogance of the British, the Russians never treated us like subhumans. I don't know such stories from my grandparents. My great-grandmother also spoke respectfully of the Russians. Even if you weren't a 100% communist, you could live well in the zone. We had enough to eat and we were not humiliated by being mistaken for wild animals. In contrast to West German schools, we had no mercy in history classes, so that no one could shirk what had happened. You can't force regret, but you can confront people about what happened. No one in my family glorified that time, even though it was hard to understand how it all happened. The civilians never wanted this war like this. They were tricked by their beloved leader and they all paid for it in blood. They were punished enough that they all lost their homes and starved. To me, kicking in the face of a defeated opponent who's already down shows a lack of character. Christ-like - is nothing in it...

The irony is that (West) Germany was rebuilt very, very quickly, while the cities and towns that the Nazis destroyed in the East were still rubble and ruins for decades afterwards. Many thousands of the destroyed villages were never rebuilt at all. Most of the estimated 20 million innocent civilians who were murdered by the Wehrmacht had no heirs to rebuild anything.

Kodachrome (at least in 35mm, not sure when 8 and 16mm was introduced) was introduced in 1935. There is color footage shot by Eva Braun at Berchtesgaden dating back to 1937. So, footage shot in 1945 could very well be shot in color.
