We can get 2 ft one year and 10-12 ft the next year. Our wind is crazy to one winter we had 7’ -8’ drifts and we are on a farm. So I know how it is . Love your videos God Bless

    That’s what our nurseries do - sell plants for 1 or 2 zones warmer than the one I’m in - zone 7a. I think they bank on the beginner gardener or “gas station” gardener or spring & summer only gardener to make big bucks especially now when prices double every year. Yes, double.

    As to your comment that garden centers don't want to sell plants that are not compatible to your zone because the plant will die and, as you say, "they don't want to do that" - not true. Garden centers here in the northeast zone 5-5b continually sell plants that are not for our zone. They sell plants for warmer zones that won't survive in zone 5-5b. The labels/tags on the plants even have the zone they're meant for. If you don't read the tags carefully, you can end up buying a plant that won't last one season, and that gets expensive. I wish they wouldn't do that. Also, they all pretty much sell the same kinds of plants. Rarely does a garden center have an unusual or different plant or a different variety (genus?). Very boring always seeing or having to buy the same stuff over and over year after year.

    Laura, you encouraged planting 2 zones lower for hardiness in cold weather temperatures. I live in Florida (Zone 9a) and we are more worried about heat rather than cold. Would you suggest planting only for Zone 9 plants or are there theories about planting at a higher zone for the heat? I hope that made sense. Thank you so much for your videos. You have truly inspired me to plant a small vegetable garden of Roma Tomatoes, Green/Red Bell Peppers, Cubanelles, Jalepenos along with Tuberose bulbs, Kalanchoes and some Salvias and Gerbera Daisies.

    So the zones are more about winter hardiness is what I'm understanding from your video. Correct? Meaning I don't have to be too concerned about the summer heat? Or how do I apply Zone maps for summer...opposite thought process of winter? (Ex. if zone 9 I can plant zone 6 or 7 out of the afternoon sun and it won't die from too much heat?)

  • @benjicanter9106

    @benjicanter9106

    6 жыл бұрын

    USDA Hardiness is mostly about the cold but the zone cut off (on the upper end) should also be considered as a cut off for perennials because the sun can scorch more cold tolerant plants pretty harshly (you could remedy this however by planting perennials in part shade and making sure they are staying moist). Also as mentioned in the video some plants need to die back in the fall and go into dormancy in the winter and obviously that would not be possible if the area you live in does not have winter temperatures below freezing.

    Sadly, our "growing centers" willingly sell stuff that will die in our areas. It's atrocious that they do this. Angers me to no end that they do this to people that haven't a clue at all about that sort of thing. It took me awhile to learn all of this sort of stuff, the USDA Map says I'm a Zone 5b when I'm actually a 5a.
