US F-35 Firing Hidden Missile from its Super Advanced Weapon Bays

Welcome back to The Daily Aviation for a feature on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, a 5th generation stealth multi-role aircraft that packs a lethal punch from it’s internal weapons bays. Currently in use by the US and several allied nations, this aircraft should see service for decades.

In 1959, Dawon Kahng and Martin M. (John) Atalla at Bell Labs invented the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) as an offshoot to the patented FET design. Operationally and structurally different from the bipolar junction transistor, the MOSFET was made by putting an insulating layer on the surface of the semiconductor and then placing a metallic gate electrode on that. It used crystalline silicon for the semiconductor and a thermally oxidized layer of silicon dioxide for the insulator. The silicon MOSFET did not generate localized electron traps at the interface between the silicon and its native oxide layer, and thus was inherently free from the trapping and scattering of carriers that had impeded the performance of earlier field-effect transistors. Following the development of clean rooms to reduce contamination to levels never before thought necessary, and of photolithography and the planar process to allow circuits to be made in very few steps, the Si-SiO2 system possessed such technical attractions as low cost of production (on a per circuit basis) and ease of integration. Largely because of these two factors, the MOSFET has become the most widely used type of transistor in integrated circuits. Dr. Dawon Kahng was an inventor in field of Solid-State Electronics.

Dr. Dawon Kahng was an inventor in field of Solid-State Electronics. Dawon Kahng was born on May 4, 1931 in Seoul, South Korea. He studied Physics at Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea, and emigrated to the United States in 1955 to attend Ohio State University, where he received a doctorate in physics. He was a researcher at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey and he invented MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor), which is the basic element in most of today's electronic equipment, with Martin M Atalla in 1959. He, along with his colleague Simon Sze, also invented the floating gate memory cell, the foundation for many forms of semiconductor memory devices.

He also conducted research on high frequency Schottky diodes, ferro-electric semiconductors, and luminous materials, and made important contributions to the field of electroluminescence. He also invented Floating Gate non-volatile semiconductor memory in 1967. After retiring from Bell Laboratories, he became the founding president of the NEC Research Institute in New Jersey. He was a fellow of the IEEE and a fellow of the Bell Laboratories. He was also a recipient of the Stuart Ballantine Medal of the Franklin Institute and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Ohio State University College of Engineering. He died of complications following emergency surgery for a ruptured aortic aneurysm in 1992. There inventions were left out of History for several reasons . National Security and of course racism. It was after all 1959? These 3 are the Fathers of Modern Solid State Electronics and need to get the Nobel Prize for bringing us out of the STONE AGE!

Did that one AIM-9 get hung on the rail a bit and go stupid there? Or was it just tracking a target off boresight which required the weapon to initiate a rather drastic correction right off the rail? Idk I'll have to slow it down to get a better look, but it appeared to immediately engage in a somewhat steep climb off the rail while going into a hard bank before maneuvering out of frame. I know that weapon is capable of some pretty extreme and rapid maneuvering, but I guess I wasn't aware of just *how* extreme those capabilities were regarding the latest iteration of the platform ('AIM-9X' if I'm not mistaken).

  • @Mishn0

You don't need stealth all the time. You only need it until your opponent's anti-air capability is neutralized. Even then, if you have a stealth air fleet, you can hang ordnance on the wings if the mission doesn't require stealth, or carry all of it inside if the mission does. You can even mix and match components of a single strike mission with stealthy aircraft leading the way with SEAD loadouts and the rest of the package non-stealth with the big stuff. But, if you don't have stealthy aircraft at all, leaving the external ordnance off doesn't do anyone any good. See? Options!
