    This lady has got to be the sweetest Urologist I have ever seen! It was almost like I was watching an elf on a Christmas special or something of the sort! I really lack the possibly correct way to put it; due to my lack in vocabulary, but her mimics, facial expressions, voice (And choice of words) and her all in all general presentation was just so sweat; SO like-able. Which makes my gratitude for the in-depth dive in ever greater. Ms. Maura (If you happen to read this)... I have come across your video in my basic search for "when" the test would be of most valid as since I am in a month of a sort of dry-fasting (from a few hours prior to dawn til circa: dusk). And even if only visually (in the lavatory); I can see a rather serious difference between the time of the day I happen to urinate. I have to underlined that it is very noticeable. May I please ask you if this condition would require an urinalysis per different hours? Or is there an optimal time of day that would best give a summary of what is needed to be taken from it? (And no worries if you do not read this in time... I shall be asking around prior to my testing on Monday. I just like investigating forehand) I currently have no idea why I would have need for your expertise in the long-run share of videos; but this video has won you a subscriber... Bless you!

    Thank you for your comment! I have been compared to Tinkerbell before, but I'm not sure about an elf 😂 I'm wondering what the difference is that you notice between the times you urinate? I would assume dry fasting would make you more dehydrated, and therefore, your urine would be concentrated, and more amber in color versus closer to clear when you are consuming liquids. If there is another difference than that though, I would think that could be concerning.

    @@MedicalMaura ; firstly: THANK you for your surprisingly speedy reply! And as to reply: You are just too sweet in general, and any patient in need of you in person assisting is very fortunate for too many reasons... I would consider "Tinkerbell" such a better fitting description than my unsuccessful wordings: had I not been so annoyed as a child to how jealously cruel she was able to get. I can't (and don't want to) envision your person in such tantrums. You are just such a beautiful person (Have watched a few more videos and I can now certify that it is not a fluke). But until your reply (As SERIOUSLY hasty as it was) I did a little more research, concluding that I may be required something called (Correct me if I word the terminology wrongly) "24 hour urinalysis". Thus, it is better I visit the doctor on Monday rather than the lab.... Because I have made the dire mistake of not telling my MD of this simple fact in our appointment. Shall you have developed a case related curiosity: ______________ My initial thought was also that it was due to dehydration or nutrition differences per times/hours I urinated... But interestingly, there is a noticeable difference in not just the value of the colour but the hue as well as its saturation (Yes: I am into visual arts professionally. Ever more validating my certification stated above regarding your person). A brief background is that I had a long series of months with both polyuria and polydipsia (massive amount of it sadly being; coffee) and had a detox round of 72 hours (To be clear not through my doctors advice but sort of against it) of dry fasting where I had for the first time seen colour in the urinal for a VERY long time (That was in fact this Tuesday)... But the variation has had changed from "slightly different to "surprisingly different" until today. I have sadly experienced other rather unfortunate symptoms for some time that dominated the duration of our consultation session... Hoping to conclude ""diabetes of some sort": my doctor has requested a blood test and an urinalysis. His clinic having facilities for taking a blood sample; he just gave a long list of "what I want checked" to the nurse that took three tubes... But sadly not having any urinalysis facility: he asked me to go do it elsewhere with results in by Wednesday (the Blood analysis is due then) when he shall (as I understand) consult someone. Now, I am currently not doing a OMAD fast… I do eat prior to my fasting and break my fasting with both different meals and supplements (Dietary). So most possibly (or wishfully) there is little to be concerned about the variations... Nonetheless: my thinking the matter was pretty much down to a specific hour when it is more "tell-tale" for the results... I have ignorantly not even thought it's necessity to mention this difference in Hue/Saturation/Value to him. I am now relatively educated enough to appreciate how ignorant/benighted I am... Thus, I have decided it best to request an appointment firs thing Monday. Everything stated in your reply was pretty much spot on. As a result: my ignorance led me to discover a very luminescent individual; if nothing :) Thank you SO much for the time you have already spent for me. Please do not feel any obligation to right-back; diagnose etc... You have already been over-helpful (is that a word?); and managed plant a smile on my rather upset mood of my day. Thank you dearest and bless you and yours!

    @@BlackDidThis yes a 24 hour urine test will give your doctor a better idea of daily protein and creatinine output (most commonly, but there are actually quite a few tests that can be ordered on 24 hour urine collection- which sound fancy but really it's just peeing into a container for a full day, us mixing the jug all together, analyzing an aliquot and then multiplying that by the total volume). If you are diabetic (which it seems like your doctor is leaning towards because of your previous symptoms) you would probably have these abnormal results: Glucose in urine (would just be tested from a single specimen, not a 24 hour) Could have a high microalbumin / creatinine ratio (which can be from a single urine collection or 24 hour- shows early signs of kidney damage before more overt protein is seen). High hemoglobin A1C (blood test that is the average glucose or sugar level for the last 3 months) Current High or low glucose level Insulin level or C-peptide blood test Also there are autoimmune antibodies that can be checked to confirm type 1 diabetes, but they aren't as routinely done.

    @@MedicalMaura Thank you SO much for your time in such detailed an explanation (lol; I can actually even picture you saying them!). I have noted all down onto a text file on my computer, since I tend to assume I would get these lab reports prior to going to my appointment on Wednesday. Knowing myself, I would be surging the internet wondering what any of it may mean. You are too considerate/thorough.. THANK YOU! There are some abnormalities in my case that got him worried. But since some of them seem explainable through diabetes: the probability seems high, and this would pretty much simplify my case (I would hope). I sort of feel obligated now to post an update here after his diagnosis Wednesday due even though I fear I have already taken so much of your time and comment space. Thank you so much for who you are and what you are doing. Please do have a WONDERFUL weekend!

    Hey! For a school assignment, we are doing a urinalysis, and for the steps in the lab report, we need to find what we will use. The teacher says that there is the basic answer (the dipsticks) and a more precise answer, which are harder to find but are better. We need to find substances that react to some elements in urine or what are the chemicals on the dipstick that react with the elements in urine. We need to find these chemicals for carbohydrate, nitrogenous wastes, proteins, vitamin C and glucose. For example, I found Fehling's solution or glucose oxidase for glucose (not sure yet). I was wondering if you could help me with what were these chemicals/substances? Tks a lot:)

    Hello, I bought some cheap strips from online and i'm unsure whether they're faulty or me and my dad are nearly the same as per the read outs on the strips. Both of us was showing +++200 RBC/ul . I'm unsure by what that means?, but every test that was taken at home shown the same for blood " +++200 RBC/ul", but no blood/ red or brown colour can be seen in the urine, is there something i should be concerned about? the colour on the strip was darkish green after the 60 seconds what the instructions tells me to wait. S.G/Densite is 1.020 is that a concern? It's gotten both me and my dad worried. thanks

    Hmm not sure on the validity of the strips without knowing the brand or anything. But you can have red cells in your urine without it being overtly red. Looking at tons of urines a day I can eyeball them and tell, usually a slight pink tinged to a normally yellow colored urine. But I think it's best if you visit a primary care provider with your concerns and get a proper urinalysis test, with microscopic would be best. It could indicate a urinary or prostate problem.

    After a certain amount of time (maybe a few hours) since there’s several colours in each tab that could possibly react with the urine to produce the result, will the remaining colours try to bleed through? Or will the result colour, and only the result colour, bleed though more prominently?

  • @MedicalMaura

    @MedicalMaura

    6 жыл бұрын

    Srry just saw your comment. No the results aren't valid after the 60 second time frame, That is why you must either read it at 60 second, or have an analyzer read it then, because the colors will become "darker" or a stronger result as time goes on. After a few hours, though, the colors fade as the reaction is all used up basically!

    First of all, you are talking about a drug screen I assume, so check out my video on that if you wish, that is not this video. Secondly, nicotine is separate from a drug screen, but is usually also off of urine, it is it's own test. Lastly, you cant see nicotine under a microscope, or any drug in a urine in a clinical setting.

    Hey there, I have a rather specific question. I'm trying to track my creatinine levels because I've begun using creatine supplements as well as eating more red meat, and I want to know how to measure any changes in my creatinine levels as I use more creatine. From what I understand, higher concentrations of creatinine affects gravity and ketones, though I'm not entirely sure (this is sort of new to me). If you know a specific test I could purchase to measure those levels,that would help a lot. Anyway, thank you for any help you can give me. I appreciate it as well as this video!

  • @MedicalMaura

    @MedicalMaura

    7 жыл бұрын

    Colin Fitzgerald First of all, to check creatinine levels, there is a blood, a random urine test, and a 24 hour creatinine where you pee in a jug for 24 hours to check how much creatinine you are eliminating (which I assume would be more due to the influx of creatine, so most likely less important than the blood levels). However, I have had this conversation with a co-worker and had found some research articles that acted like as long as you have normal kidney function, your blood creatinine levels would be normal from reasonable creatine supplementation. I have found direct correlation from lack of water consumption and increase in diuretics suck as coffee and tea to cause an elevated blood creatinine, though, in an otherwise young healthy male. So drink lots of H2O lol In the case of ketones, you can purchase ketone strips similar to these dipsticks, not sure where, but I know they are out there, for people on the keto diet, or their original purpose; for diabetics. I eat a somewhat ketogenic diet with an increase in protein and meats and I do see ketones in my urine if I don't pair with a carb ( Im also gluten free).. but my blood creatinine levels have always been fine. The first tests I mentioned you would most likely have to go through a PCP or one of those any lab test places (not sure the validity of them, however), but the ketone strips should be over the counter or purchased online easy enough. Hope this helped! Maura

    Also specific gravity of urine could be increased due to a lot of things; mucus, protein, red blood cells, white blood cells, bacteria, so that wouldn't be as a reliable test to check creatinine. Plus you'd need a dipstick or go old school with a refractometer lol

  • @MedicalMaura

    Actually I have found a medtox pdf that has some interfering substances listed for each type of drug, and what can cause a false positive. Since Suboxone is made up of Buprenorphine and naloxone I looked them up. It does have naloxone listed as a possible false positive for oxy at a pretty high concentration of 1O,OOO ng/ml when the cut off for ocycodone is normally 1OO ng/ml of oxycodone. So not sure how feasible that is, but it is a possibility. It's at www.medtox.com/resources/images/6817.pdf

    Positive Nitrites means your urine has nitrite producing bacteria, like E. Coli, so it can be very serious, especially if it migrates to the kidneys. Best to be seen by a provider and get on antibiotics for the infection.

Basically i peed straight into the cup, i was only able to pee like 3 to 5 table spoons. They said i have large amounts of hematuria. But i took it a week ago and it showed moderate. I don't smoke i don't drink. But i have the cold/flu. And i originally went in because i had epidymitis. Now they want to do a cystoscopy??? Im 27yrs old. I really don't want to do the procedure....

    +Hustlas Story it could if the small amount of urine is concentrated, but it could go the other way too, that theres actually more blood in the urine.. hard to say when you arent sure if the small sample size is indicative of the whole or not. Regardless, there really shouldnt be hardly any blood in a sample, unless a woman is on her period and it's not a clean catch.

    This was very helpful! Thank you very much for the detailed explanation and breaking the parameters of the test strips down. I have a guinea pig who had bladder stone removal surgery on August 1/19 and I'm using the strips to detect blood as an early indication/prevention method. I'm aware that I need to expect different results on the other parameters such as a very alkaline PH being normal for guinea pigs. I'm also going to be looking at the leukocytes and protein levels. In humans are there any other parameters that I should be watching for that could indicate a possibility of a urinary stone?

  • @MedicalMaura

    @MedicalMaura

    4 жыл бұрын

    Well I'm not sure what kind of stones Guinea pigs get, but with humans and calcium oxalate, the pH is usually quite low like 5 or 6, so I would watch for change in pH from the normal depending on what type of stones they get. Or even getting like a kids microscope, or cheap version for at home, because I checked my dads urine when he had a kidney stone, and although it was much harder to tell what I was looking at than the ones I have at work in the laboratory that are thousands, I could still visible see crystals from the stone he was trying to pass with it, and it was a national geographic one I got from Aldi's for like $20 lol

  • @jenniferhislop7007

    @@MedicalMaura normal Ph for guinea pigs is 8-9. His stone was a calcium carbonate stone, something I'm sure doesn't occur regularly in people. That's interesting that you mentioned a microscope because that was my first instinct. My friend who is a vet tech said that I probably won't see crystals without a high power microscope. I'm glad you mentioned it. I'm definitely going to try it. Thank you so very much for your response. I'm doing my very best to have that be his last stone.

    @@jenniferhislop7007 yeah calcium carbonate I believe is pretty rare in humans, but crystal wise it doesn't look that far off from calcium oxalate (monohydrate), as they both can look like dumbells/ hourglass/ or slightly safetypin- ish. But there are even different types just of calcium carbonate, all pretty recognizable, IMO. Also this article says it would turn more cloudy and brown that normal, so those would obviously be good indicators. eclinpath.com/urinalysis/crystals/calc-carbonate-equine/#

    I have a question for you, so I had a uti for 2 weeks and was on antibiotics, finished those and a week later tested my urine again and I had a lot of leucocytes and blood in my urine still!? But my Sample comes back from the lab with no infection! I feel stuck and dunno what to do now 🤷🏼‍♀️ having a lot of white blood cells in my urine I didn’t think was a good sign?

  • @MedicalMaura

    @MedicalMaura

    5 жыл бұрын

    So your sample comes back from the lab with no infection from the first urine or the week later one? Yeah it's not a good sign, but sometimes you can still have an immune response once the bacteria is no longer alive, meaning there could still be white cells and blood in your urine without an active infection. Are you still symptomatic of the UTI? Also, there are some infections that don't necessarily grow well when cultured. Like if your UTI is now due to yeast (which can happen due to killing all bacteria, good and bad, and it has the opportunity for an overgrowth) instead of bacteria, the yeast sometimes doesn't culture well. So a lot of people when they get put on antibiotics will request anti-yeast medication if they are prone to that happening, like diflucan.

  • @MedicalMaura

    It sounds like it could be a yeast infection now, if you call your doctors office and tell them you think you have a yeast UTI after being on antibiotics for so long, they usually will send a prescription in without having to see you again. Yeast won't burn like most UTI causing bacteria will when you pee, but can cause the urgency. It's worth a shot, and then you'll know it's something else if the diflucan doesn't work.
