The Spell is one of the most beautiful tunes in the world, if not the best one. I have a cassette with this 1 minute masterpiece over and over all 30 minutes. Some times I take my guitar and playing it like 20 times in a row. Just a masterpiece. Created by genius. Thank you!

I'm hooked on this video. This is one of my favorite Heep songs. I didn't know for a long time who the guitarist/keyboard player was in this video, until my heart was refreshed when I discovered that it is who it should be, Ken Hensley, the writer.

They actually did a pretty good job on this one. Better than Circle of Hands at the same concert. Bernie Shaw is no David Byron, but then again, who is? David Byron was one of the best male vocalist I've ever heard. Shaw deserves some credit here though. So do the others. This is an awesome video.

@mysticradio I'm a huge fan of UH of the early 70's and the more I listen to them, the more I come to appreciate Gary Thain. Probably the greatest bass player of all times. (Many say he would have outplayed Jaco Pastorius if he hadn't died too soon). Though looking infinitely bored, Trevor Bolder does a good job playing Thain's tunes.

(I rather not, or I will offend my common Heepsters) Actually both Gary Thain and Trevor Bolder had/have pretty good vocals. Bolder sings on "It ain't easy" from the Conquest album and does it well. Thain did some vocals with Keef Hartley - check out "You say you're together now" on KZread to hear him sing - interesting voice.

I saw UH during their tour for Demons and Wizards. Wish they had done Paradise/The Spell for that concert. While the music is superb in this vid, I miss David Byron's strong vocals. They might have tried harder to find a vocalist closer to Byron's timbre and range. That being said, still, I thouroughly enjoyed this vid. Wish it was coupled with Paradise, as it should be. I've always felt if released as a single, Paradise/The Spell would have been bigger than Stairway to Heaven...

@genxxxersize Oh no, don't get me wrong! Paradise/The Spell is an AWESOME suite. Top 5 suites I've ever heard. But this performance is blasphemy compared to the original. The vocals are 20358 miles off and the bass is nowhere near what Thain did. This is not Uriah Heep in my ears, only a tribute band with special guest Mick Box, and in this case Ken Hensley as well. Heep went into a coma after Thain died, was kept alive artificially when Byron left and completely died when Hensley left.

  • @mauricemorning

Probably Bernie at his best. He sounds better without the sharp distortions. The song is way too fast and I don't know why Trevor insists on playing a bass solo through every passage of every song! His lines are awesome, if somewhat predictable, but he never gets out of the way. Gary Thain was the same but his tone and lines were inferior. Nice to hear and watch though. Thanks for the upload.

@janicescoles Yes, that's Kerslake. I've never liked his drumming, it just doesn't flow like it should. He was a very cool guy, but I still don't like his drumming. His drumming here is a tiny hint better than the original, but there is still FAR too much "stumping", and little flow.

God, this is close to blasphemy. Let Hensley sing his parts, he's got the undisputed best voice in that line-up! Hensley is really the only one who does a job worthy of Heep here, Box does almost nothing, Bernie Shaw just shows off and is nothing compared to David Byron, Trevor Bolder tries, but is NOWHERE near Gary Thain. Lee Kerslake is the same as always, just stumping away. Phil Lanzon isn't too bad. But in the end: A billion miles away from the original.
