Industrial archaeology from this early and mid Cold War period should be preserved so people can have an understanding of the mindset which drove the paranoia of both the Wastern and Soviet ideoligical mindsets. Another great video guys, well done!

We are currently heading in a similar direction, the difference is that people aren't taught about or remember the dangers of the cold war. Now people go about with their heads in the sand rather than being mindful of the possibilities.

@Tobi Gibbons yeah that partial ignorance is always frightening... it was necessary to have emergency comms centers that might somehow survive due to danger, not due to paranoia. to give a chance to the normal people, if and where they survived, to still have a way back, to survive as a nation. And not because of paranoia or for the lone survival of the comms crews. so sleeping in a corridor might have sucked, but they'd have known this smaller bunker would be more pressure resistant and less likely to be flattened along with them. at least in the early years when it was planned. it wasn't even paranoia that drove the arms race. it was IDIOCY - and still is - to not arrive at a peaceful agreement and just letting the other "block" be. But the risks were real - the weapons aren't just made of styrofoam.

@@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath Thanks, you guy's obviously know ! I live in the UK and my age and mobility stops me doing what you guy's do so the next best thing is to watch and enjoy what you and other explorers share on line. Most of the large bunkers here are known and security is tight but we have many WW 11 bunkers and tunnels that have been abandoned and appear to be forgotten by the M.O.D. Looking what explorers are sharing here I cant help but get the impression that there are far more underground structures (decommissioned & live) than anyone ever imagined. The shared videos have got me very interested and I sometimes see buildings that "don't look right" and one I have noticed recently is a supermarket with the usual glass doors at the front and a heavy steel door at the rear whilst on the roof there are far too many air inlets and outlets and a car park far too big for the supermarkets size ! Keep sharing the great videos guy's and stay safe.

Oh, and I recognize all those wires and protection coils - very similar to what we have in the US. I believe they retained the manual switchboard because it's almost impossible to break!

@5:55 So doing a calculation on the readings given on the electrical panel, 50amps 3ph * 250 volts works out at about 21kW, the same result given roughly by the kW dial - so... what the heck is using 21kW down there, did you miss the weed grow room!? I hope someone gets the pumps on and gets the water out before it gets too deep....

As far my eyes can read looks like 20KW (active power), 10KVAr (reactive power). That switchboard is feeding something outside that bunker, electric motors or some lamp ballasts. They could have checked that small white enclosure at 14:30 . I think the water flood pump is connected there, maybe a circuit breaker tripped.

They used manual switches because that was the technology of the day. Remember this bunker is probably 50 years old they didn’t have the fancy automatic electronic relay switches we have today and there certainly wasn’t the technology for electromagnetic pulse attacks. You’ve been watching too many sci fi movies.

My guess is that they were either saving power or there was some administrative reason to have a human operator involved. Manual switchboards like this were not common past the 1930s except in very small circumstances. The crossbar switch was developed during WWI and was commercially popular in the 1950s and 1960s, replacing manual switchboards and rotary "step-by-step" electromechanical exchanges. By the time this bunker was built electromagnetic relays were VERY normal for telephony... full of all kinds of components including vacuum tubes and the 'new' transistor. The other commenters seem to have forgotten that television and RADAR existed at the time... automatically connecting two wires together was well within the scope of electronic capability. However those systems were expensive and consumed a fair amount of electricity. I do not believe EMPs were much of a concern for switching as the amplifiers would be built with the same technology. If the amplifiers go there's not much left, regardless of whether the switchboard is manual or automated. The entire bunker is likely shielded to protect them and all of the other communications electronics and controls. Even if it wasn't, it's possible that neither would be affected by EMPs since this does predate microprocessors.
