Exploring Abandoned City House - Pennsylvania
Built in the early 1900s, this large house was part of an institution and was the home of the superintendent. When the institution closed in the late 1900s, this house was vacated as well. The institution was bought by a private buyer in the mid 2000s but the sale did not include the land this house resides on. The State of Pennsylvania still owned this house until recently when a preservation group acquired it. They are actively fixing the place up and it will be a museum showcasing the history of the institution it belonged to. This house was vacant for over 20 years and since it was well protected by the state, it has probably one of the best looking interiors I have seen for over 20 year of vacancy. I was given permission by the preservation group to tour this house, so that is why you are seeing this video..

Every-time I see an abandoned house, it makes me wonder what stories the walls hold inside. There are so many vacate homes that could be returned to it's former glory. The details and craftsmanship that went into building these homes, you won't find many homes today being built with that same quality.

If you see a top/attic floor finished out in these old houses, it's pretty likely the space was originally intended for live-in servants. If the house also features a "butler" staircase, that's another good clue that the top floor housed servants.

I love the staircases in old houses. The woodwork is also one of my favorites like the cabinets with the glass in them and the windows in the front entry. but my all time favorite is the old bathtubs. i like the bathtubs that are open on one end instead od walled up. just like this house has. and the tile, no matter how old, always seems like shine like its new. What a great place. glad to hear they re going to be refurbishing it. thanks for sharing.

That one is a nice old house and deserves to be done up, and for the new owners no one has wrecked the place. It looks nice with the old trees around it. I can see many hours with scraper just to get the worst of the paint peel off the place so it can be cleaned. I hope the owners are handy or have friends that can glaze, wire, plumb and repair the roof.

I think part of the reason old houses peel is the lead paint, nothing sticks to it for long. Course you can sand it (a big no no) or scrub it with TSP (which I don't think is available anymore) for some tooth. You either have to strip everything or deal with maintaining peeling paint. In unoccupied houses, I'm sure wild temperature changes don't help. Super pretty house, many thanks for showing it!

  • @alibabafurball

I think what happened here is they painted latex over old oil based paint. This was common in 1980-1985ish because they didn't have a good etching primer, if they used one at all. TSP is great stuff !!! It isn't the lead in the paint that does this however and not all oil paint contains lead. That yellow color in the paint under the white in the video at 3:50 is very likely lead paint. There is a very white looking paint to that I did not see in the video that uses lead in it for the color as well to look out for. It is very white. Sanding is going to be the key to getting the surfaces back in shape and the plaster walls will love it. They have to in order to fix the minor holes in the plaster due to the water damage anyways. I still have a "milk carton " of TSP powder around. I hope they didn't discontinue that product, it was very good. Oil based paint and water based paint never mixes and you can see the result in this video and others that Steve has. Another one I have seen recently is people painting latex over their melamine cupboards and wondering why later it flakes off.

  • @Paperista

This is completely off topic, but I don't think people know you should use a different brush for latex and oil. Natural and synthetic are not the same.

The hospital beds were likely institutional surplus, not to store, but bedding for guests or esteemed visitors, maybe medical staff. Highly unlikely that any patients stayed in this house. In Victorian times maybe, but not in the 20th century: Dangerous, conflict of interest, tearing down of boundaries that need to be maintained. Fabulous house. Look at the plaster arches, the beautiful doors, floors, dormers, bay windows. Nice job!

It's my guess that those rooms and beds were probably used by live-in house staff, like a housekeeper, maids or cook, etc. it's a large enough house with an important occupant that live-in staff would be expected. Nice (for once!) to see a beautiful old house that isn't trashed or demolished. Thanks for a nice video!

I'm s ecstatic that for once, a gorgeous home like this is going to be lovingly restored! Too many are just laid to waste and it is a crying shame. Thank you for taking us along on the tour!! Looking forward to the next vid! (and hopefully a restoration in progress vid too!!) :-)

I love the size and levels of this house. I would love to see the "after" results once the restoration is completed. How many bdrms and baths did this house have? It reminds me of something out of "Gone with the wind"

Awesome video of a beautiful house Steve, excellent view down through the staircases. Reminds me of one I explored when I was little, but they tore it down to accommodate apartments, what a shame. Here's my vote in favor of seeing your update once this one is restored.
