Urban Drivestyle UNI Moke Classic Review - $3k

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Urban Drivestyle UNI Moke Classic is a fun and engaging retro-styled and motorcycle-esque ebike made for adventure with fat-tires, suspension, cool styling aesthetics like motorcycle style handlebars and extra large front headlight, great utility with the extra long seat and adjustable area foot pegs to add passengers in a number of configurations. Powered by a Bafang 500-750 watt rear hub motor that is engaged via either torque based pedal assist or a thumb throttle on the right, also has a very respectable 48v 14ah high capacity battery, you can set the power and speed by level of assist you are in, the top speed I got was about 26mph, making this similar to a speed pedelec! Mechanically, the UNI Moke is operated by a Shimano Tourney derailleur with 7 speeds, a 11-28 tooth cassette and a 52 tooth chain ring in the rear, a big win are the Tektro hydraulic disc brakes in the front and rear, the front, which takes the brunt force of physics when stopping, gets a larger 180mm disc brake rotor, while the rear has a 160mm disc brake rotor. The battery takes a little getting used to to remove as it is a multistep process, the keys have to stay in the battery when riding around, which could be potentially annoying, the bike is somewhat large and defiantly heavy at 80lbs, so do be aware when maneuvering it or hoping to load up the bike and take it somewhere.

    I have this bike! I commute everyday on it and drop the kids off to school on it. There is no other bike like this on the market. Great review 🙂 btw. I have upgraded the rear cassette to 11-32 teeth and the cranks to longer 'normal' 170mm ones and the bike loves it.

    Nice! Those are great upgrades... was it difficult? Did you order the parts and do yourself or get some help from a shop or something? Also, how much did it cost?

    @@ElectricBikeReview It was just a normal crank and chainring change but you do need a crank extractor, £40 from eBay and the cassette just needs a cassette tool and a big adjustable spanner. £30 for the cassette. They are the old school threaded type. I did it myself but I did used to work in a bike shop 🙄. Any shop should be able to do it if they have the 'fairly common' parts.

    I now like the real time riding without holding the camera. Gives it a true perspective of the ride. The only issue other than the price is, if you live in an area that is tough on ebike laws they might stop you because it looks so much like a vehicle that requires a plate. I am blessed I live in a small town with few cops and they don’t care what you drive as long as you respect the speed limit. You always do great reviews. Keep up the great work.

    When do you plan on posting the accessory review? Also curious if you plan on doing a review of the Uni Swing? I'm pretty sold on Urban Drivestyle bikes over Rad Power or Juiced because of the load capacity of 400lbs. I plan on riding with two (adult) passengers quite frequently and no other bike in this category markets load capacity anywhere close to 400lbs.

    Does this bike operate on the throttle alone, or do you have to pedal the bike in order to get the bike moving? In your review you say you prefer to operate the bike without pedaling, but it seems like you are pedaling the entire time and never solely using the throttle to power the bike.

They are comfortable to ride with an extremely solid build (built like a mini tank tbh) and the WOW factor is through the roof I always get asked about them whether I am just out for a ride or carrying a load of supplies on the front and rear racks people just want to know about them :)

    Finally! Been waiting a while for EBR to review this brilliantly engineered ebike. By far this is the most versatile, utilitarian ebike you can buy. Check their website to see all the different configurations you can build. Yes, you can take 2 people on it, and you can carry cargo for shopping runs, outings, etc, which makes it a very practical vehicle. My only gripe besides the price: Why no mid-drive??? It's almost a deal-breaker for me.

    Ossian Vogel - I understand the pros (many) and cons (essentially cost) of having a mid-drive, and that the existing frame design of the unimoke makes it quasi impossible to integrate such a motor. All I'm saying is that from the perspective of a rider who rides in hilly areas (San Francisco or Seattle are perfect examples), and/or plans on taking a passenger often, torque and power efficiency are key, and especially for a heavy bike, a mid-drive is optimal, also because it brings the center of gravity closer to the center, which is what you want. I've ridden a mid-drive (Bosch) and the difference in performance is very clear. Also it makes rear wheel maintenance much easier, saving time and money. Regarding your point about mid-drive models, I agree that trying to come up with a frame which accommodates many different models, would not make sense to do. What would make sense would be to pick a good model/brand, like Bosch, and partner with them. Of course you'd have to change the frame design in order to accommodate their mid-drive, but then you can justify your higher price point. Bottom line is that an e-bike of this form factor and utilitarian function, is begging for a mid-drive, and if the Unimoke had one it would undisputedly be the top-of-the-line option, with a justifiable price.

  • @EPSTomcat11

    @EPSTomcat11

    4 жыл бұрын

    Ossian Vogel - Ok, I see (regarding Bosch) and your philosophical position. So then, does Urban Drivestyle sell the Unimoke bare (no motor, only pedals)? If so that could be a great option for us "tuners" to install a mid-drive ourselves. If that's the case I wouldn't mind buying the bare bike, which would also cost much less I'd imagine.

  • @spongthe1st

    @spongthe1st

    @@EPSTomcat11 You can definitely get the Unimoke frame on its own, it's on their EU website at least. I just wish they did an aluminium frame. Too many eBikes go with Steel, even in the mini-bike category and when you add that to all the weight of the motor etc it turns them all into tanks. I get that a lot of people say "well you're gonna ride it with assist anyway so why does it matter" but i'd at least like the option to ride un-assisted when I want to (not least in case the battery dies) and it will make it easier for the motor to push up hills.

    There is nothing new in this bike. In feet most e-bicycle, except they have motor and battery. Call this e-moped or whatever, except bicycle. I even wonder the cost of motor and battery is so expensive. Because no major manufacturer have made e-motorcycle?
