Today my 1989 Ford F150 is back in the shop! I used to daily this truck until that fuel selector valve I had replaced failed. Thank you to Holley for helping me get this truck back up and running!

GOOD EPISODE! I learned quite a bit about installing aftermarket fuel injection from this video. In the mid 80's fuel injection was near magic and Edelbrock made one that gave Chev 350's a really solid kick in the pants. Again, back then FI was considered "near magic". Damn I'm a fossil!

i did a similar upgrade on my 81. had a 302 with an 86 efi bank fired system like this one had. i put in a weiand stealth intake, holley sniper kit, billet speed fx hei distributor, and also full length hooker headers with thrush welded mufflers turned down before the rear end. perfect old-school sound in my opinion. and my truck used to have the crappy aod trans and i put in a 5-speed from a 92 flareside. the 302 was from a 94 mustang so it has the roller cam in it. talk about waking up a truck. been running great for the last 5 years while only having to replace the o2 sensor after the first 11 months. anyway, love the videos and the work Mook does on vehicles. oh, almost forgot, get rid of the oem oil pump shaft and go with an ARP pump shaft to save yourself the future trouble of twisting the oem shaft in half like i did from having a heavy foot lmao keep them videos coming :)

I would highly recommend upgrading your alternator to the 3G version, the 2G are known to not charge very well. All you need is put some 3G plugs on your existing alternator wire and grind off a bit of the alternator bracket as the 3G one is a bit bigger, but it will bolt up once that is done. I did it myself and have had no troubles with it. It also opens up other upgrades like putting in a new radio or any other higher power draw upgrades you might think to do.

  • @Maples01

    @Maples01

    Жыл бұрын

The 2G is known to start fires, in fact, the replacement wiring harness warns it can catch on fire so its best to get them off ASAP, I put a 3G on a 73 Econoline, learned they must use a serpentine belt tho, it will burn up a V-belt, must run at least 2 v-belts when using on a vintage engine.

@@brandonjohnston7746 I have a guy who builds mine, while you can find 200 amp 3G alternators on ebay, you will not find the guts to build one, they have been discontinued, which has me skeptical of what is sold online as a 200 amp 3G, I believe they just swap the pulley to spin them faster. I can tell you the durability of the 3G is like no other, my wheelchair cable, 2 gauge, fell on my exhaust, welding itself to it, boiled over my battery putting the alternator in over charge, I don't know how long it was like that, did not damage the alternator, won me over. I was going to put one on my 89 E150, but my shop guy told me it is not a 2G as it should be, its a special order large case found on RV's and Ambulances.

So from working on these 2G alternators myself and digging through forums, I'll give yall some helpful info. If the battery is dead and you try jump the car, its known to fry the 2Gs. It's best to recharge the battery, not jump. Its often typical to change both the battery and alternator in THIS type of setup. They also only go as high as like 110 amps depending on the model, usually around 75 amps for most. That's why people generally recommend installing a 3G and upgrading the gauge of wire for the charging system circuit.

I bought Hooker ceramic coated headers for my 95 351 project truck, would not clear the frame on passenger side, couldn't tighten them at all. The drivers side window seems to want to fall into the door, rear gas tank leaks, front one is plastic so it should last another 30 years before turning to dust, and don't get me started on the rest of the truck, especially the oil gauge, which is just having a moment and flailing wildly around, it works when you're cruising but at idle the oil pressure is "AAAAAAAHHHHH!".

If I remember correctly a 4.0 90's Ford Explorer belt is the correct length for the air pump delete. (I had a 89 myself) In those years there is a aluminum piece in the column that actuates the ignition switch that cracks and breaks causing them not to crank as it can't push the switch hard enough. Tilting the column up might temporarily help.

A lot of guys used to use RTV on top of the cork valve cover gasket (so it would adhere to the cover), and use grease on the side of the gasket facing the head (axle grease will seal in motor oil). This was to facilitate more convenient (and less messy) valve adjustments, as well as not needing to replace the gasket every single time.

Regarding the factory bed mount bolts, one can use Torx head bolts and U-nuts in place of the original style shoulder bolts & nuts that are so prone to becoming one piece. I have done this with a couple of OBS truck beds and sourced my bolts & nuts from late '90s Rangers. Remember to also use a proper anti-seize compound when reinstalling the bed.

I've got a 90 F150 4x4 extra cab and had problem with fuel it ended up being the switch on the dash. I had to test it a lot cause it wouldn't do it every time and that's with the switch being out and on my bench. Then I couldn't find the right replace switch with the right face so I had to take apart the old and the new switches and modify to fit and that took care of it. I would have like to have seen all of the removing of the fuel lines and everything you did. Sorry for this being long. You done the right thing by going with the long tube headers I'm putting on the shorty "bolt in" headers and one side is not the same as the other right is smaller and mine was a true dual exhaust now I'm stuck until move funds are found for new exhaust it could use it but it still had some life left but the new shorty's still look good under the hood 👍

Mook, you wouldn't like this wasp monster! Driving, open window, a bug hits my mirror, explodes, into the open window onto me. No big deal, happened before, UNTIL I looked down, it's body was in two parts, both was the size of a nickel, it's head was like a monster from a movie! I freaked out, swerved, started hitting brakes. Even though it was not living no more, it was scary as HECK, on my lap n chest..

When I rebuilt my 1988 broncos 302, I built it as an HO with a stock mustang roller cam, GT40 heads, explorer intake and a 95 gt computer.

Mines will be carburetor soon, got a Stand alone controller from U.S Upshift for the E4OD. the injection is just to hard on gas.. Edelbrock intake and a Holley will solve that issue!..Great trucks mine is a 1991 f250 5.8.

Nice swap. I carb swapped my ‘90 F150. Used Ford intake from an ‘83 Mustang GT, used Holley 1850, new cheapo HEI dizzy, she runs goodly. So far, my AOD hasn’t self destructed. I did use the bracket for the TV cable. I’ve got an M5OD with all the goodies that will go in her eventually

Looking forward to seeing this completed. Been wanting to update the EFI on my 95 150 5.8. Factory injection on these are so limited and restrict most bolt ons. Thanks for the content as always and glad to see ya back Mook. Oh, and congrats to the both of you on the engagement.

Yeah I've had an 87 and a 94 F150 and anything before 96 is crap once they get miles on them. They can't really compensate for engine wear

You put a fuel pressure regulator on. So turn the key on and adjust the pressure. Check grounds and it has to have the vacuum hose. And drill the header and run a O2 sensor in.

When installing a Ford intake, its easier to place it in the correct spot the first time by using 6 inch thread stock as guides. One in front and one in back.

I'm growing my hair out to donate too! I've got give or take a couple inches less than what you had. Hoping to donate on a regular basis. So happy to hear one of my favorite automotive youtubers has done the same.
