I feel your pain removing the back wheel on the Rideal - so I wanted to share some tricks I learned doing this when I got my first rear wheel flat. Cobra Kyle isn't kidding: I have a few decades experience as a mechanic, and this is a very difficult job. If you are worried you may make a mistake here, it may well be better to take this to a bike shop (call ahead and make sure they are willing to work on an ebike rear wheel - not all shops will do this, or will work on an ebike at all). I highly suggest using a bike stand to do this. I think the issue is that all that torque from the motor has to transfer to the frame at the rear dropout on the frame. If you look at the at the derailleur mounting, it looks like they intentionally beefed it up to prevent this torque from spanning the metal in the dropouts (turning the "U" shape into a "V" shape). Anyway, the point is that torque is really going to seat the axle into the dropout, and breaking it loose is not an easy task - but there is a trick I figured out to make this easier. Key here is to rely on shock to break loose the axle, not brute force: several gentle hammer "taps" are better than fewer heavy "bangs." Fist disconnect the power cable, cut the zip tie, remove both real axle nuts, and the derailleur guard. Optional, remove the 2 allen bolts that attach the brake calipers to prevent warping them (this also made putting the rear wheel back on easier, IMO). Before doing anything else, take several pictures of how the slotted torque washers fit between the axle, frame, and axle nuts so you don't have to guess how they all fit when you are putting it back together. Now here is the trick: take either an open ended wrench or a very high quality adjustable wrench to fit in the flattened slot of the axle. This fit between the wrench spanners and the axle slot has to be very snug - if you have even the slightest gap, you can damage the axle. if you have even the slightest doubt you can pull this off, it is better to skip this step. Now carefully with a hammer tap the wrench in the direction the motor turns. You are not trying to actually move anything, but rather unseat the shaft with shock. Repeat the process on each side - very gentle taps. Do this 3 or 4 times on each side, alternating sides. Next trick: put the axle nuts back on both sides and hand tighten, then back off 1/4/ turn. Find a nice long bolt or other metal piece (that threaded shaft that came with the bike attached to the front dropouts works perfect). Place that bolt firmly on the flat side of the axle nut and gently tap the top of the bolt so the shock is directed the angle of the drop out. Again go back and forth on each side several times. Use light taps - again it's the shock that will unbind the shaft, not brute force. using the bold will prevent the hammer from deforming the axle nuts. keep alternating the sides. Be patient, be gentle - good luck!

Like the upgrades you did. My thoughts if possible. Lighter rims, front fork suspension, solid tires, and a snack basket on back. I'd suggest having a small tool kit and if the budget permits a battery operated pump if you do long trips.

Your in San Antonio sweet!! I'm really debating on which ebike to get, I'm looking at the ridial or the ride1up core 5

I do live in SA! Tough choice between the two. The Ariel Rider seems like a better deal right now cause it's on sale for $900. It's got 5 nm more torque than the Core 5, and a slightly more powerful battery. I personally prefer the twist throttle on the Ariel Rider over the thumb throttle on the Core 5, but that's just personal preference. I am digging some of Ride1UP's other bike designs though! Best of luck with your bike purchase!

@@CobraKyle I've lived in San Antonio for almost two years, love the trails here. The Ariel rideal midstep been out of stock for weeks hopefully I could get one soon or maybe a new models coming?

@david blanchard Ah yeah, looks like right now they only have the high step blue in stock. I'm not sure if a new model would be soon cause I think this was just released last year, so probably a couple more seasons away from any major changes.

For the tires, should I buy the 700x35 or 700x40 to fit the rideal?

  • @CobraKyle

I went with the 650x45 for a more plush ride. They were still a bit more narrow than stock tires, but saved a lot of weight. I'm not sure if you can run 700c wheels on this bike.

How much clearance is there for a larger tire? Do you think a 2.5” or 3” wide tire would work?

the rims on this bike are really narrow. I'd say the current tire is as wide as you should go.

Because the weight saving was largely in the tires it will have maximum effect from a physics standpoint. Less energy required to get the tires spinning.
