The only problem with this design is that because you wrapped the chain around the wheel well, the gear ratio is much larger, so you gain less distance when you petal. You would spend alot more energy riding this bike than any other bike. Other than that, the design is really futuristic, it gives me a Tron vibe. Great work.

The other issue is bearing noise. The metal on metal sound of the wheel on the bearings. Also didn't see him shift gears or go off road. I imagine mud if ridden off-road is a issue too. I was intrigued by this, because I was thinking of something similar for one of my projects. At first I was concerned about the lack of brakes, but then noticed the brake disc on the intermediate layshaft / gear set, because after some thought, it was exactly where I expected to see it. What I still can't work out is the attachment of the large rear sprocket wheel [ presumably another custom cut part ] to the rear wheel rim, and why that fat tyre doesn't rub against the chain, & push it off the sprocket. Any ideas, or working hypotheses greatly appreciated.

Great creativity of this mechanic! I watched the reconstruction of this bike with great interest. The analyzes of the presented material show that only a specific rim is suitable for making a spokeless wheel. Its construction must be quite resistant to lateral and internal loads, because this is where the bearings are mounted. The total rolling resistance is higher than in the standard version. It is important that effective performance, congratulations, greetings 😀.

looks great. functionally, good for building muscles and endurance I would imagine (if you ride long enough). Once u get used to the weirdness of it compare to a conventional bike. edit: this is mainly to point out the pros without hitting the con straight on the nose as respect to the amount work put in. The guy only had the gears, chain/pedal gear and cassette/cog from a normal bike to work with. Otherwise I would imagine he can make a bike with much better gear ratio and maybe even ability to change gear, depends on resources and design. (for those curious, hub is just the round pipe thing at center of the gear circle/wheel. In this version, the hub is moved and is no longer spin in a 1:1 ratio to the wheel (conventional bike). So it is hubless if you just focus on the wheel, but still has a hub over all, it just moved to elsewhere.

As this might be a prototype for something with more engineering thought put into it. Stress points may be an issue. Also gear ratios may have to be more controlled as well. I like the idea. It has merit. I think you need to do some more constructions to get a final build. There are a lot of people that have give you some things to think about, but overall, I would buy it.

The mechanical stress at the point where the wheels attach to the main frame would be very high. It is most likely unsafe as the welds may easily break upon breaking moderately hard or while riding over rough terrain. But aesthetically this looks great.

They do eventually burn up and have to b replaced , And without the spokes the rim will eventually warp alot easyier maybe it will b slightly more ridged because the rims being wider but this bike will not be able to handle any serious bumping and jumping around or the rims r gonna warp its now basicly ment to be a beach cruiser bike and lightly used on flat smooth surfaces or for short rides its ultimately a huge fail..

@@XIskandarX I don't know mechanics well but I would ask myself. How durable and resistant to break it is - you have high forces in one point. If someone more sturdy uses it might just break on the first curb. Chains are very tense and power transmission - you would need to calculate how energy efficient it is. Also, there is a loud music as background so you can hear how ball bearings act. Next, for me it's just to many parts - consider something breaks. I think there lots of other things that people who know mechanical engineering would point out. ( @always eatinpotatos is mentioning more in the comments in other thread)

So what fascinated me the most by this build is that huge sprocket on the rear wheel. Could that be modified to fit the rim of a regular tire? Like in addition to its regular gears. Because with the right gear ratio and an ac generator, that would make an excellent restorative charging system for e-bikes, to utilize some of the momentum of the bike or energy spent peddling, to help recharge some of the battery reserves. Obviously its not free energy, as the generator will be taking energy from the over all system of the movement. But if your were able to engage and disengage it as needed, you could utilize coasting down hills as a way to get a quick recharge as needed. Or opt to peddle a bit harder to charge the battery, while you still aren't tired, so you could take a break later. But with the right gear ratio, like this one, I don't think it would take a significant amount of effort to gain back some charge.

Great innovation, creativity and ingenuity ! 10 out of 10 !! This is an excellent example of lateral thinking. But I don't understand what is the problem that is being addressed by all this effort? How can we better use these creative minds , since they are clearly getting bored!. The modern bicycle is already such an efficient machine. What is the next limiting factor that is holding back such a practical mode of transport?? Puncture-proof tyres? Electric ABS brakes? Improved drive train or gearing ratios???? Your thoughts welcomed

I love how he put the chain on the wheel, but it messes with his peddle to wheel spin ratio - he has to peddle a lot more for the wheel to turn. I suppose that is why you don’t see in bikes. Looks so badass though. EDIT pedal*

This video has given me plenty of insight on hubless vehicles. There are plenty of flaws in the idea, that are not present in regular bikes, which makes this idea hard to justify in real life. Sure, the build is fantastic and manages to address most of the issues inherent in the hubless bike idea, but those are still workarounds specific to this build. The most jarring issue for me would be the fact that there is one less mechanism shielding the rider and the components, which are more numerous and more fragile, from shocks in the ground, which was mitigated by using a fat wheeled bike, whose tyres absorb much more impact than other bikes. Second off is the effective removal of an entire axle from the drivetrain, which messed up the force multipliers involved. The bike is painfully slow, and while I can bet it is a breeze to climb up hills with, you aren't likely to get much speed out of it. This bike wouldn't have functioned at all without that second gear he added at the end, and in his final demonstration you can notice he had to speed up the footage to appear to move at regular speed. Basically, it is a really cool vanity build, but not really practical.

Good point about the shocks and fat tyres. As I'm just starting to think of such a build, I needed to know that. Thanks. Gears I already know; you're quite right, and thanks for pointing out the sped up footage. I'll have it a bit easier. I'm planning a reclining vehicle which will give me more room to sort out the ratios. Hublessness will still limit the space for gearing, but I'll have about a meter or so of length to play with.

My first thought is dirt getting into the "rims", or even a small sharp/jagged rock getting kicked up into the inner rim area could jam in those indentations and cross rods/bearings... or just grind you to a halt if you got into some sand or mud.... but my second thought is WHY... what actual advantage does this have? or what disadvantage of current designs was this supposed to be addressing?

  • @lynchmob72

my second thought (first was about the speed) was about the strength of the tires. i feel like these rims will warp fairly quickly.
