Upgrading Santa's Sleigh! 1973 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible Gets A New Carb and Power Steering Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On today's video, we're working on a new project for the channel. My dad picked up a 1973 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible with a 500ci big block and it's cosmetically perfect but needs some mechanical love. The carb was changed out a while ago with an Edelbrock unit that was too small, and the power steering pump leaked terribly.

Your video brought me back to the time when I was a Cadillac factory field service representative (starting in the early seventies). You might want to jump to a 1974 HEI distributor which will fix all of your ignition issues and are still available since the system was used for many years. That upgrade was very popular back in the day and for good reason due to its reliability and additional performance. Oh, I started watching your channel because I'm in the midst of restoring a '66 Corsa. Small world, eh!

That’s a great idea, I’ll pass it along to my dad. It only has about 10-12 degrees of total timing so I think something is wrong with the distributor. And small world with the Corvair! Best of luck on your Corsa

An HEI is a great idea. Set it up once and it will stay in tune for decades... An electric choke conversion would be good, too.

The electric choke has already been ordered and I think it needs a new distributor (even if we don't do HEI)

Another issue that showed up as those engines gained age and hours was the nylon/plastic material that was applied to the camshaft sprocket that would deteriorate and allow the camshaft to get out of phase with the crankshaft. Result would show up in an ignition timing problem, among others. If another distributor/advance mechanism doesn't fix your problem you may want to chase this possibility. It is possible to change the sprocket without removing the engine but it is necessary to lift it enough to allow removal of the oil pan in order to gain access to the engine front cover, etc.

That's a good thought, we had to do the same thing on our 1966 Thunderbird. The cam gear was phenolic and nearly ready to come apart. I'd like to take a look at that next time I'm in Memphis and get it taken care of permanently.

The stumble is caused by the accelerator pump not being able to deliver enough fuel. The Quadrajet though is an excellent carb(I like them even more than a Holley)and the one for the engine in that car should have about 800cfm(they had from 780 to 840 rating depending on hp) air flow rate. The compression ratio is low too on those motors so the distributor curve is really important to them. You mean the choke was sticking closed? Ah...you figured it out. Get a HEI distributor for that engine. It is head and shoulder above the Pertronix.

I Definitely Agree about the HEI Distributor 👍

I agree that timing is definitely off on this car. It's only getting 10-12 degrees of total timing, so it acts like the mechanical advance is stuck. I'm sure that a new distributor would provide benefit, but what do you notice most about the HEI compared to the Pertronix units?

No need to replace the distributor in IMHO. Just get the mechanical advance working and make sure the vacuum advance is doing its thing. Once you get the timing advances correct you can see how it runs. With the emissions crippled 500 you might never have the performance that you'd expect from such a huge engine. My 71 thunderbird would burn the rear tires and had a lot of power for such a big car. My 73 thunderbird literally would not hit 90 mph on a straight flat highway because of the drop I engine compression and timing of the cam.

I tried to find the specs on line but could not. I do have a 68 service manual which of course has the 472 engine. It shows 12 to 14 degrees at 4000 rpm with 8 to 10 at 2400 rpm for centrifugal advance. It lists 3.7 to 10 degrees at 12 inches of mercury then 11.3 to 12.6 beginning at 16 inches of mercury for the vacuum advance.@@AutoAnatomy

Besides getting rid of the points, what do you see as the benefits of HEI on this car? It already has a hall effect pickup and a hotter coil. Plus I've heard you have to remove one of the belts to install the HEI cap. Thoughts?
