I like the exhaust system that you fabricated, nice design. Now that you have a nice prototype, I think there's a market for it if you could find a place to bend up all the pipes. It won't be a cheap kit, but there are quite a few LM owners who will pony up the dough for a quality exhaust system. That S/S will out live the owner!

That would be neat to have it built, I'm not sure how many would be interested but if there is enough interest I could look into it.

Rubber mounts instead of directly welded will reduce noise dramatically. The new exhaust is FAR sexier!

Thanks! I think on the next iteration I'll try and make some form of rubber isolator between the mount and the body.

I'm thinking, after seeing this muffler that an oval one would show even less. you're absolutely correct the new sound is amazing. I had dual exhaust on my truck and I got them from the dealer were even made by Toyota under the TRD option. 60 MPH a terrible drone sound!

Great sounding "saxophone" you made there! Good job on the tig welding.

I've met me and I would have notched the rear valance so the exhaust tip would be more straight out the back....and more visible. I like the sound of the new system a bit better.

Hey Sean!! Enjoyed the video and could see that a LOT of work went into the design and fabrication. The results were interesting though not as substantial as I'd anticipated. Thanks for the plug for the 2024 Corvairborne Convention in Dayton, Ohio this summer. We will look forward to seeing you there. Hmmmm....fuel injection next? I'll be interested to see your approach to this idea. I know, it has been done but I've heard the results are mixed. Anyway, keep up your good work and fixing up the "FLOODED Corvair!!"

Hi Craig! Like I said towards the end...as long as the drone went away it was worth all the time spent. I was hoping it would be a bit quieter than it was, but I think that's a function of it being a resonator vs a true muffler. Perhaps with an actual muffler the results would be even more dramatic. My wife and I are really looking forward to trying to drive the car up to the show. It's about 450 miles from our house here in SC to the show, so it wouldn't be that bad of a drive, but certainly the longest trip we've been on in the car. As for the fuel injection, I can't imagine a situation where the car is less driveable or has worse mileage/power with fuel injection than with the carbs. So if it improves any one of the three (Mileage/Driveability/Power), I'll be happy. All three and I'll be ecstatic! Thanks again for all the support and encouragement, and I look forward to seeing you in OH! Sean & Christie

Sounds a little like a Porsche 911 with a little flavor of Ferrari exhaust note; you did an awesome job. I love it.

My 1964 Spyder was the same thing...3000 rpm at 60 MPH with a 3.55 : 1 rear and 13 inch tires. The Turbo muffler was basically a straight through pipe. I had a cutout for racing and it didn't sound any different. The turbocharger took care of most of the exhaust noise. Apparently the factory did their homework for noise control. Droning was not a problem.

Sean, I purchased stainless steel pipe and bends from Burns Stainless! I’ve had the two into one since 2001, I’m looking to change it up and use it on a turbocharged 140. I will also include an O2 bung to run a sensor for air fuel ratio gauge. Great work!

Great! I hear good things about the quality of Burns products. I think the next time I remake this exhaust fully it will be for a turbocharger system

I like that sweet sound. At least on my monitor... Lots of work to build that; way more than I would have attempted. Looking forward to that EFI!

I have to say that your videos are very well done. I have shared them with my whole corvair family and friends. I've been into corvairs for about 40 years now and my son just purchased his first corvair and is in the middle of the resurrection. Your skill level is really improving by leaps and bounds. You're getting like some of the other you tubers - things are becoming second nature to you. I like the exhaust note but that's just me- I've ridden loud Harleys all my adult life. If the exhaust becomes an irritant to your ears just remember you have a whole canvas to work with. Don't confine the exhaust to just the engine area you can most certainly use some of the other under carriage areas. Nice work !

Beautiful work. You packaged the entire system very well. Happy to hear you were able to get rid of the droning. That drone can get old in a hurry. It seems to me the exhaust note has taken on a more modern, small displacement sound. Probably more a matter of preference to most. If it were a choice between the lower exhaust note w/drone or the raspier tone wo/drone, I'd take the latter. Great job. God bless.

Thanks so much, it was a fun time trying to figure out how to package it all in such a tight area. It does sound more small-displacement, but I'm glad the drone is gone! Probably going to keep making changes to the exhaust until it's exactly what I want (it's really close now).

One thing that you didn't have in your previous exhaust system, was a "balance pipe". It really quiets down the whole system if it is placed correctly and the correct diameter pipe.

from an electronic stand point the human hearing can't distinguish less than a 3 db difference in sound level. you may have hated the droning, but yeah I don't like the new sound, maybe an actual muffler would be better. love you videos looking forward to the EFI videos. mike

Really enjoy your videos. I currently am restoring a 66 Corsa. I am getting a lot of good ideas from you. I so much like the new exhaust versus the other exhaust. I think I am going to follow the direction you went, but I will cut out, the floor of the engine compartment to make more room for a larger muffler.

Sean, I had put a JC Whitney complete header/exhaust system on my 73 Vega back in 74, but didn't like the raspy sound either so I took it to a muffler shop and they welded in the wheel wells a couple of 55 T-bird mufflers. Excellent sound and space-saving like the SS one you just put on.

Good video, another option is a flex joint just before the muffler and mount the with rubber isolators. Time will tell its all a guesstimate, even the pros have a trial period. You may be able to do something with an attenuator type tail pipe!

Just a good quality muffler nothing fancy

Great stuff! Getting the tail pipe opening behind the car a bit will help with the overall noise level and the drone. Space is limited for your S bend pipe. Buy a stainless donut or torus, cut it in quarters and you’ll be able to make the S Turn and get that pipe out from under the car.

I've got a few ideas on how to make it even better. Sadly, my brain never stops...

I like the full open throttle sound, but have to be honest, that was a lot of work for not much return. I would have tried other mufflers. Enjoyed the video.

It was a lot of work but I think it was absolutely worth it. The drone is gone and there was a significant reduction in sound pressure. Remember, for every reduction of 3db, sound pressure (not volume) is halved. Plus, I've already changed the muffler out for another one and like it even better! Nice job!! I think you could’ve mounted the muffler with a universal muffler hanger that’s captured by an exhaust clamp

It's so tight up in that area, honestly there is probably 1/2" of clearance all around the muffler. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount things for the NEXT version

I'm a fan of a good sounding car. You corvair is a bit too raspy for my taste. A turbo muffler is maybe a bit more pleasant sounding. I doubt it would create much restriction since most are designed for V8s double the displacement Fun fact. The turbo muffler was originally designed for the Corvair Turbo Spyder Hence the name

I would try a Helmholz resonator, if it can be fit under there. Something like this. Seems like even a little extra pipe with a dead end will work wonders. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nm131M-keduqgbg.html

If you would tune it to 130 Hz, it should also do something at 260 Hz.

Stainless needs to be surrounded on both sides with argon when welding, to prevent contamination. Those plugs allow me to back-purge the system with argon.

Yes, I am making my own fuel injection system for the car (not based on someone else's system). Been working on it for around a year now, so hopefully it works! Funny you should mention it, as I JUST ordered some sound deadener mats for the car yesterday. That will be in an upcoming video.

@@AutoAnatomy Expansion/contractionfrom heat cycling of the exhaust system, along with vibration, will cause cracking in the pipes - typically along the weld joints.

But would you do it again?

I like the new exhaust better, I had the old exhaust on my Corsa years ago, to me the old or trumpet style sounds to much like a VW bug.
