Upgrading RAM When One Slot is Soldered - Asus Zephyrus G15

Ғылым және технология

This is a RAM upgrade guide for modern gaming laptops with one RAM stick soldered to the motherboard, specifically the Asus Zephyrus G15. This guide could also be used for other popular gaming laptops with one stick of RAM soldered to the motherboard, like the Alienware M15 and Acer Nitro.
I know mixing memory does not always increase performance, so just be aware that this may not apply to every laptop out there or every configuration (4gb +8gb, etc.)
In this video I go over the myths and misconceptions around upgrading RAM, how to upgrade your RAM on the Zephyrus G15, and performance benchmarks before and after upgrading. I hope you’ll like, comment, and subscribe for more content like this and to help the channel grow!

Yes! Thanks for this video Josh. My G15 should be arriving tomorrow 🥳. I'm glad there's a content creator (you) whose videos I can consult to help me get the most out of my machine. Besides being knowledge dense, your videos and delivery style bring something extra to the table that others don't. Also, I think it's important/valuable that you're conscious of--and give reference to--what other content creators within this domain are putting out there.

It will be interesting to see if this is different with the newer DDR5 models, apparently those run quad channel so dual channel with a single stick is possible? I haven't spent any time looking into it yet.

Hey Jarrod! Yeah, I've seen that. Dual channel on one stick seems really cool. My guess is that now having mismatched ram would matter even less, but we'll see. Might have to pick up a 2022 M16 to test it out, or maybe the 2022 G15 if it releases soon.

I just did the same thing on a G15/3070 but used 16G single rank instead of dual-rank and that likely explains the slight difference you and I have. For me, Time Spy numbers were identical. Performance mode was 8771 vs 8739 (16 vs 24) and Turbo mode was 8957 vs 8989. GeekBench was 1072/6138 vs 1081/6627 in performance mode and 1446/7347 vs 1442/7430 in Turbo mode. So, despite the mantra that mix-and-match will hurt you, this came up with no difference whatsoever. That is, of course, on a clean boot with nothing else running. Have a few browser tabs open, your Discord or Slack up, and maybe not a clean boot so who knows what's still in the background and that extra 8G, even if that part is in single-channel is looking a whole lot nicer than swapping to the SSD. I'm not doing anything fancy now - just have my normal work apps open at the end of a day, and I'm sitting at 20G of RAM used. If I hopped on to play now, the added room I now have post upgrade would most likely reward me with a smoother experience. So for me, the 24G is $60 well-spent. It's certainly not hurting me. Your data back that up with actual in-game FPS.

Had been assuming that I would jump straight to 8gb+32gb, but perhaps I'll just stick to 8gb+16gb as any heavy multitasking should be relegated to the desktop anyway, but I do need to be able to put together some video edits on the go and I'm often between 20-30gb on the desktop with basic work apps (eg: not actively video-editing). Thanks so much 🙏 so if I get a M16 I will definitely make a video! I love a lot about the M16 but I would definitely wait for the 2022 one since there’s a lot of improvement there, including a mux switch and better screen. In the US, the 2021 M16 only comes with a 3050ti or 3060 which is a shame because the 3070 one performs pretty well from what I’ve seen. Slightly better than the G15 even, although I’ve never seen any data on it hooked up to an external monitor yet.

@@amirshayanmoghtaderi5840 I totally understand. The 2022 model should be out in the US in the next few weeks, but I don’t know about other countries. As for what you’re saying, what you heard was right. The M16 runs a bit hotter and fans are louder than the G15. The battery life is also not as good, but in games (if both have the same GPU) it performs a tiny bit better. And that screen is beautiful. It’s also a very tiny bit thicker than the G15 as well. So you would really be getting it for the screen mostly. It’s up to you whether the better screen is worth the loss in some battery life and fan noise.

@@JoshCravesTech personally, I don't care about games that much. I want to render with this laptop, but my main work mostly relies on GPU power. I'm not sure if I ever use the benefits of thunderbolt 4 on M16, but it also has a faster pcle 4.0 SSD. Is it noticeably faster in real-life usages, like opening apps? M16 with 3060 has the exact same price as G15 3070 in my region, and M16 3070 is 400$ more expensive. I also thought the build material of these laptops was identical, but G15 has a better build quality overall IMO.

Yoooo! Great info to know. Been thinking about this a little down the line for my spankin' new G15. Been having some minor optimization issues, and your videos seem to be the best I can find about the Zephyrus g15. So, one issue I keep having is AMD software keeps crashing and needing to be reinstalled. It seems like a kinda common issue but the fixes are kinda all over the place from what I've found. Also needing to know what I should do with bios. I just want to set it up for gaming and streaming with optimal performance. Your other video on optimization for the g15 is queued on the laptop to go over again, but if there's any advice you could give, I would be very appreciative. Thanks a bunch! So I think what might be happening with your AMD Radeon is that the drivers are mismatched and Windows is trying to update it but to an older version. Have you tried the Windows Show/Hide Update Troubleshooter? It’s in that optimization video. And then as for the bios, it’s very limited what you can do in it. But since it’s AMD, everything is pretty much set up and optimized in the bios already without needing to change anything. I don’t think I’ve ever actually made any changes in the bios. The laptop’s CPU and GPU should effectively balance power depending on the task you’re doing

My advice is to upgrade as the downsides seem to be mostly financial. Find out the frequency, timings and manufacturer of the memory chips currently soldered to your board and get something most comparable to that. Have it be dual rank and good quality, as you would be solely depending on it after you use up the first (4+4)GB running in dual channel. No. I edited this whole video without hooking up to an external monitor and it handled it very well. The external monitor doesn’t make as much of a difference in editing programs as it does in games

Great video, wish I could find information about an Intel based laptop platform for this. I've never been lucky enough to get these highly sought after 5900 based AMD laptops, had to settle for the Asus Tuf with an i7 and a 3060. Similar to this G15, I have 1 soldered and one upgradeable RAM option. I just wonder if the same or similar numbers would be true for the Intel 11th gen.

I’ve seen someone say they did this on a 10th gen Intel laptop with no problems, so I would assume it works the same with 11th gen Intel: www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/s2h4ru/8gb_8gb_or_8gb_16gb/hsenep9/?context=3

Here’s an M16 with i7-11900h and 24gb of RAM. The person’s Time Spy scores are great for a 3060: www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/o2pe10/asus_zephyrus_m16_11900h_3060_timespy/?

Still debating wether to upgrade with the 16gb and 32gb. I connect my 2022 Asus Zeph, M16, 3070ti, i9, to a 2k monitor, run a game on full screen, and use my laptops monitor to have a browser open. And I see my ram jumping from 95-98% RAM usage. Not sure if the 16gb ram slot would be enough, while having a couple of tabs open on a browser. Since I am already hitting the 16gb cap, idk if the extra 8gb would be enough. Im only running COD:MW2 or Diablo 4, and it’s hitting max ram. Wondering if maybe I’m getting memory leaks.

Oh wow that is utilizing a lot! But it could be just having multiple programs open too, or maybe games are just starting to eat more ram. I think an extra 8gb would be just fine for a while but for peace of mind you might just want to add 16gb

Do these performance differences also apply to iGPU only systems or an upgrade there will tank performance?

It won’t make the iGPU any more powerful. However, you should checkout AATU. It’s a really good 3rd party app that can actually overclock your iGPU, although I haven’t tried it on mine

Can you please do a video on undervolting this laptop for best performance while having 10-15 degrees celcius drop in temps?

Undervolting the CPU doesn't typically decrease temperatures. It gives you more performance at the same temperatures. However, if you set a tdp or temperature limit in combination with an undervolt then yes, you can receive similar performance at lower temperatures. Just use AATU for that: amdaputuningutility.com/ And as for undervolting the GPU, I show a very quick tutorial on how to do that in my G15 Optimization video!

Very useful video thank you. Now I have to figure out how to open the laptop. Do you have a guide for memory upgrade and for cleaning this laptop?
