Getting closer to 'bullet proof' one up-grade at a time. Cheers for sharing.

It would be interesting to see how you managed to still run the tapered collets with the 10mm studs. I've done the conversion and there isn't enough meat in the flange to run the 100 series collets and the hole in the original's is too small for the 10mm stud. Did you offset mill the studs?

I just went with them as it would be once drilled. Yes the engagement is minimal but in my opinion it’s better than having no collar. At the end of the day either way is unlikely to fail in my style of driving.

Thanks for the video. I was thinking to do this upgrade with LC105 hub studs on my 80 series LC front axle, but after further checking it seems that the hub cover wall thickness is not enough, and I would recommend to use the 8mm Trail Gear arp studs instead. As I see from your video the LC105 studs should fit the rear shaft flange as there is enough “meat” to fit the cone washers. Perhaps I will go down this route, but it has to be considered, that the downside of this mod is if you break an axle shaft you are done till a new shaft is machined and drilled for the 10mm studs. You cannot just buy a replacement shaft.

Hi Matt, I will be doing this to my 80, my question is, should I upgrade the front hub? I just fitted the Terrain Tanner part time kit and they supplied heavy duty AVM manual hubs.

If your running bigger tyres it’s worth it.

Because your rear wheel bearing needed adjustment, when you adjust the rear wheel bearing you have to take out the axle shaft to see the state of the wheel bearing adjustment!

Yes you do have to remove the axle.

In the States We have seen twisted splines without stud/flange failure. What do you attribute that to?

Generally wheel bearings coming loose and stressing the studs. in my case a lot of hard driving on corrugations.

Once someone told me it's easy to replace broken studs tha replacing broken axle. But I am not a mechanic so what is your thought on it ?

I think you should do this if you wheel hard. If you don't then std studs are fine.

Hi Matt, I’ve threaded the nut on the stud😔 while putting the rear axle seal back together. I don’t have a welder to weld but on stud to remove stud. Would you have any ideas on what I can do? Cheers

Can you get the axle out and then grab the stud with vice grips?

Can this also be done to the front hub? I keep shearing studs, even ARPs on the short axle side. Thanks!!

No mate. You would need to modify the studs to 10mm

The dowels do nothing but locate the axle on the hub. Adding extras does nothing for strength. Those dowels are brittle.

I disagree. If they were only to locate the axle one would be enough and it could be a 1/4 the size.
