    What's your view on the 2020 GAMAAN online survey which showed that the plurality of Iranian were 'non-religious' (although the labels were varied) and not Muslims? Do you think it's accurate? The official source stated that 99.9% of Iranian were Muslims, but I found that hard to believe. Actually the survey is rather hard to believe too, to a lesser degree. I know this won't affect the map since the single largest religion would be Islam but I'm just curious what you think of it. It's just fascinating to think that one of the most theocratic countries in the world is possibly also one of the most irreligious, demographically speaking.

    You've missed the Armenian Church under the oriental orthodox group. Armenian is the first Christian country. And the church today has around 9 million members. Given its significant role in the history of Christianity, it's essential to include the Armenian Church in your chart.

    Hi there, just thought I'd add for maybe future updates. Māori native beliefs in New Zealand were heavily influenced by colonisation in the late 1800's. There are multiple versions of traditional beliefs; the two most common belief systems are that there is a single supreme god (Io Matua Kore) or that are many animistic like deities (Te Kore, Te Pō and Te Ao). These beliefs are still actively practiced in New Zealand, as we Māori often give thanks (karakia) to our chosen deities (Atua) when doing things such as harvesting, hunting/fishing, celebrating, mourning etc... There are also two minority christian denomination known as Ringatū and 'Te Haahi Ratana' or the Rātana Faith. These were both religious and cultural response to the abrasive and mass desposition experienced by Māori at the time (result of colonisations). The New Zealand census in 2023 lists 12,336 as Ringatū and 43,821 as Rātana. Just wanted to give some recognition of us beige footnotes.

    I think some religions are missing, particullary from the Middle East: -Yazidism is a religion in the Middle East that have elements from ancient religions, zoroastrianism and some islam and gnosticism. Also, Yarseanism evolved from them, and also Alevism (which is so influenced by chia islam). The followers of this group of faith are account by millions. -Babism get another split: Azalism, a minor group keep practice it in Iran. -Why is Alawism in a different color? Is not as different as Chia Islam. -Mazdakism is a very interesting sect that split from zoroastrianism in the VI century AD, but get extinct. -Circassian paganism of Khabzism is still practiced by some people in the Caucasus. -Cargo cults in Polynesia and Melanesia are amazing, particullary John Frumm is famous. -Eckankar is a mixed islam-sikh-hindu religion in the US. -Sabateans are a very interesting religious sect of Jews mixed with islam with some mesianic ideas. -Old believers, Molokans, Doukhobors, Subbotniks, Khyltsy, Skoptsy and other Russian sects of spiritual christians who rejected Nikon canon. -Burkhanism is one of the principal religions of Altai Republic in Russia, a renoved Altai Tengrianism opposed to the shamans with Christian and Buddhist influences.

    Hello Rychei. In the comment section of the last chart released I left a comment and information on Tengrism's origin from the Eurasian steppes/ Mongolia you might find interesting. I have a question for you I hope you can answer regarding no longer being a Mormon. Did this change occur due to the practices or people in your church or was it based upon comparative study and research on the veracity of the church's origin story ?

    @@jaydouglas5847 As another former mormon let me volunteer that in my case the change happened as a result of study into the history and background of the organization and its founders. I was born and raised in the organization in Utah and didn't really question it much until my 30s when social media got big enough to amplify voices outside of the LDS church's official narrative. Turns out that narrative doesn't have a lot in common with documented history.

    I love your charts, but I strongly disagree with placing Roman Paganism as an offshoot of Greek Paganism. Later on, Roman Paganism was essentially replaced by Greek paganism, with just the Roman names remaining, but Roman Paganism itself (i.e., that of earlier Latin texts) is starkly different from Greek Paganism, which is heavily influenced by the non-Indo-European indigenous religions of Greece. I know it's too late, but Hermeticism really shouldn't be shown as dying off. It had a large presence in the Islamic world and later in Europe during the Renaissance. Neopaganism also has some influence from European folk traditions that survived Christianization. Paganism itself wasn't being practiced, but it's influence was still present in things like Folk Catholicism and Folk Orthodoxy, which would in turn influence some parts of Neopagan practice. Also it would be really interesting to see videos on Western Esotericism and on the simplified version of the Christianity chart.

    Hi, Taiwanese here :D great stuff and thank you for the effort for collecting all the info into one! I know I am probably too late but would like to share some of my thoughts here-- 1. "Chinese Syncretism" could also refer to a Chinese philosophy during the Warring States period of China, same period when Confucianism was born. But I guess "The Three Teachings" sounds too ramdom to be listed as an official name. In Chinese languages, we call the religion "Ru-Shi-Tao". "Ru" stands for Confucianism, "Shi" stands for Buddhism, and "Tao" for Taoism. Sort of says how ancient Chinese tries to harmonize all three religions/philosophies into one but didn't bother to give it a new name. 2. To be more precise, Tibet would be put under Buddhism and Xinjiang would go under Islam. But I just realized the graphic is categorized by country, so nvm. 3. Taiwan is crazily investd into salvashionist religions and Yiguandao is definately the greater ones. Never heard of Weixinism though, weird, since I am from the same city it was born. Falungong goes without saying the most famous ones not only in western media, but also all Chinese speaking worlds (expect China).

    Minor spelling thing you might want to take into account for your next printing batch: Under Shibutsu-shugo, you have "Japanese Synchretism" instead of "Japanese Syncretism." I don't know if that is an accepted alternate spelling or a typo, but either way I think you have the word spelled "syncretism" elsewhere in the chart, so at the very least you might want to change it for consistency's sake. Great work, Matt!

    Don't know if someone mentioned it already, but I'd definitely add "Aztec" religion (the most familiar, even though it's not really the correct term) since it still has quite a lot of influence in present day Mexican society in the syncretism with Catholicism. Don't know if that should be under native American religions because it's unclear to me what you meant with "native American" (the US or the entire American continent).

    I may have missed it, but was finno-Ugric paganism included? Similar to Baltic paganism, it was one of the last pagan religions to hold on in Europe, and with the rise of neopaganism many of these religions have been revived, especially since some of them such as Mari and Sami had pagan practices that survived into the modern age.

As far as paganism goes in general in Russia, they make up about 1.2% of the total population at about 1.7 million, 44% of which (750k) are rodnovery (Slavic neopaganism), however the region with the highest rate is North Ossetia at about 29% (200k) practice Assianism which is a Scythian pagan religion.

    Hey Matt, just want to start out by thanking you for your awesome work! I love the charts of yours that I have and I'm sure I'll be getting more in the future sometime. These charts are amazing. I do have a little critique though: as a Latter-day Saint (from the mainstream brighamite branch), I don't have an issue with labeling the movement as Mormonism to encapsulate all LDS denominations or with linking the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Freemasonry as these are both things that I've been pushing more recognition of (especially awareness of diversity of Latter Day Saint denominations), but I think that the specific way you've portrayed these two facts on the chart is misleading. While Mormonism was founded in 1830, the esoteric and frequently Freemasonry-derived beliefs and practices like temple worship, eternal progression to godhood, and polygamy didn't develop until the Nauvoo period, ending with Joseph Smith's death (1839-1844). Following Smith's death, the largest faction of Mormons consolidated around Brigham Young, fully embraced Nauvoo Theology (including rites borrowed from freemasonry), and moved out West to Utah; but many of the other Latter Day Saints remained behind and explicitly rejected both Brigham Young's authority and the Nauvoo theology that he embraced - to the extent that many of those groups denied that Joseph Smith ever taught such things in the first place. As such, the influence that Freemasonry had on Mormonism, while undeniable for groups like the Brighamites, Wightites, and Strangites is virtually non-existent for both the 2nd and 3rd largest Latter Day Saint traditions, so it doesn't make much sense to me to link Freemasonic influences to Mormonism as a whole. Again, thanks for all your hard work, and I hope you find this comment helpful!

    ...But given that he didn't have enough room to include any of the individual branches of Mormonism, how would you suggest he represent the Masonic influence? I don't see where else you'd put the arrow, given that it did come through the O.G. Prophet.

  • @weirdlanguageguy

    @weirdlanguageguy

    @@ps.2 I see what you're saying, and understand there isn't much room for some of this nuance, but I think I'd like to see the mormonism bubble split with a dotted line, one half without the masonic line and one half with. Again, that said, I'd understand if that would make it too busy; and the way it is currently is probably good enough for the chart, even though I think it could be better.

    Thanks for bringing up the fact that different religions have different views concerning atheism/agnosticism in their ranks. As someone who considers himself to be both Jewish and somewhere in the atheist sphere (I was born and raised Jewish, and never took on a different religion nor renounced Judaism, so by Jewish standards, I'm still Jewish; on top of that, a significant portion of my personal moral code comes from my Jewish upbringing, hence me personally considering myself still Jewish even if I don't engage in many of the ritual practices), I find it very interesting that Judaism doesn't consider that to be a clash at all, whereas some religions would. This brings to mind one of the subtle but (to my mind) interesting differences in how Judaism and Christianity interpret the shared part of their religious text, specifically (in this case) the Ten Commandments. The text itself is the same (minor and mostly unimportant translation differences aside), but there are differences in the numbering. Specifically, Judaism considers "I am the Lord your God" to be its own commandment (with "You shall have no other gods besides me" also being its own commandment), whereas most forms of Christianity do not consider "I am the Lord your God" to be its own commandment, but rather part of the same commandment as "You shall have no other gods besides me." (I specify "forms of Christianity" here because apparently different Christian groups do not agree on the numbering in other ways, though considering "I am the Lord your God" and "You shall have no other gods besides me" to be all one commandment appears to be consistent, based on my admittedly rudimentary research.) If anything, one might think that Judaism treating "I am the Lord your God" as its own commandment would signal more strongly against atheism in Judaism compared to Christianity, but it seems like the reverse is true. I suppose this is mainly due to the differences in emphasis on the importance of belief versus action between religions.

    This is essentially an amalgamation of a lot of their charts, but I don't think it's attempting to make a strict chronology, just how they relate to each other. There's a vague past-to-present, but I imagine making it strictly chronological would make some parts of the chart really cluttered and others relatively empty.

  • @MrOoYT

    @MrOoYT

    @@derektroutman4793 I think the main reason is because it would simply take up too much space, and the text would become too small / chart become too large. The best solution I think would be to just get all of the religious denomination charts along with this one for anyone who wanted to compare.

    A few small potential things to consider: - Zoroastrianism greatly influenced Christianity both through the Magi but also in theory the Lake of Fire is not Greek but a Zoroastrian concept expanded to an eternal damnation theme as opposed to the great fire purifying the evil spirits. Arguably "Good thoughts, Good deeds" is just "Do unto others as you'd have done unto you". - Legalism, to my knowledge is a governing philosophy but was never actually a religion. Is there any evidence that it was religious? - European Pagans influenced Catholicism quite heavily. and a random question about the Christian denominations. The United States and the British Civil War were both majorly impacted by Puritanism yet there seems to be almost no information whatsoever in either your Christian denomination series or this chart. I have no idea what they belong to as far as denominations go, who are those guys? Proto-Baptists? Anyway, just some thoughts of my own, sorry for throwing all of that at ya after all of these changes.

    Stylistic choice, but on a future version the ones that co pollinate heavily like as you mentioned Greek and Roman paganism could use a second line to each other. It would take a lot of consideration for minimum requirements. Every following existed somewhere next to others at some time so it could get hectic real fast but on a re release it might be worth it.
