*UPDATED* TP-Link Router Wireless Bridge Setup. How to configure Enable WDS Bridging Archer

In TP-Link's WDS Bridging setup configuration document they leave out a crucial step and the router is not fully setup until you complete one last step in the process.
www.tp-link.co...
At the end of this document there should be another step calling out the IPTV/VLAN section where the "Enable IPTV/VLAN" box must be checked, the "Bridge" Mode must be set and the LAN ports 1-4 must be set to "Internet".
Without this step you will only be transmitting a wireless signal from your Tp-Link router, but the ethernet LAN ports 1-4 will not be functional.
Hardware Model: Archer A6 V2.0
Firmware: 1.1.8

Hi Mike, thank you for the video and saving us a lot of time!
For those who are asking about losing access to the tp-link router/ bridge after saving the setting, I was in the same boat but I found this simple solution to work. I checked the IP range the main router with internet access uses for dhcp, and assigned the tp-link bridge with something within that range rather than sticking with default 192.168.0.x range as shown on the video. That's it!
many home routers use default subnets like 192.168.100.0/24, or 10.10.10.0/24. in this case my home router uses 192.168.1.0/24 range, so I assigned an un-used IP in that range to the tp-link bridge - lets say, 192.168.1.188/24. This allows you to still connect to the tp-link router even when its in bridge mode. because technically speaking you are still connected to the main network (router with internet), so the main router should have a way to reach the tp-link bridge. that's only possible if they are both using the same range. Hope this helps!

Hi Mike.! You forgot to uncheck the NAT under System tools., FYI.. it will be enabled by default. Goto -> "System parameters" appears as the last option after WDS settings.! NAT is not required while the router is in bridge mode., which may reduce or cause lag to the network speed by pushing it into "Double NAT processing".

Have not heard that. But I did hear a lot of people saying they would have to repeat the setup process after power loss so you may want to check the pinned comment. I cannot say I disagree with your TP Link sentiment... The only TP Link product I am running currently is a 24 port switch. But If I need a hard connection RJ45/Ethernet in my garage I use the Archer. I was originally using this method for running a mining farm in my garage but all the Bitmain miners required a cable and it was easier to bridge than to run adapters for each rig. Hope this keeps ya solid into the future.

Lock to AP just means that it will "lock onto" the single Access Point you connect to even if there is another Access Point with the same credentials, SSID and Password, in range. It basically means it will only connect to the one wireless device to get its signal. Unless you have another AP with the same name and password I would just leave it off. community.tp-link.com/en/home/stories/detail/514

Do both routers need to have the WDS option? I'm trying to set up a TP-Link Archer A7 as WDS client, which has the WDS option, with a TP-Link AX3000 as host, which doesn't have the WDS option in its menu system. -- I've followed all of the WDS set up procedures I can find, including the above video, but cannot get it to work. -- The Archer A7 says "Run" in the status, but no ping, or internet. Should I keep trying, or is it impossible without both client, and host, having the WDS option?

You need to make the one without the main router connecting to the modem and use the one with WDS to extend the first router. The first router is just broadcasting the WiFi SSID so it doesn't need it.

@@MikeNovelli I solved my problem. The TP-Link Archer A7 (the client with WDS), has three WDS modes (Auto/1/2). I've found that, if the host router is WDS capable, mode 2 is used, and for host routers that are not WDS capable, such as my host, a TP-Link AX3000, then Mode 1 provides better compatibility. The difference in the modes, is the number of MAC address they use to complete the WDS connection. Mode 1 uses 3 MAC address, while Mode 2 uses 4 MAC addresses. The auto mode obviously doesn't always work. As soon as I changed from auto, to mode 1, it started working. -- Your tip on bridging & turning on the Ethernet ports also helped.

@@vrockandpop yeah. The version of that archer c6 router was v3.2. So for that version, I had to set the channel as static in the airtel router's 5g network (I was bridging the 5g network, so I set the channel as 44 in the airtel router) and it was working fine then. I was getting some random speed drop to 0kbps issue after that but it worked good for the rest of the time. But in March 2023 the archer c6 v3.2 router stopped working. After a restart it came online and asked for a firmware update, I clicked on yes and left the router for 1 hour. But after the update, the bridging scan stopped showing any networks (both 2.4 and 5). I tried everything, flashing old firmware, smacking it, trying to see if it detects any other hotspot's network, but it didn't. The wired PPoE connection worked fine when I put the LAN wire in it, but my main priority was bridging. So I bought a new archer c6 but this time it was v4. Now the bridging works great and I set the channel to auto in my airtel router and it still worked. I'm also currently not getting random speed dropped to 0kbps issues after using the v4 as bridging.

I have been trying without success to use it as a modem only and use my existing Orbi Router and Satellites for WiFi connection. I was hopeful when i found this video. The interface is almost similar to what i can see, however, 'System Parameter' is nowhere to be found. Have everything above up to 'Traffic Statistics', but missing 'System Parameter'. Can't find WDS either to configure. I am thinking may be my ISP has set some restriction on the modem/router they send me. In the end, i set up the Orbi Router in AP mode. Unsure if the end result in terms of performance/speed is the same or not.

A very useful function, that unfortunately is abandoned on TP-Link toutes and replaced with EasyMesh, that simply clones both bands, not just one, and doesn't have a dedicated backhaul - so the speeds on both bands are the same with the speeds from the band that is bridged in this example - that is, halved. Still, better than OneMesh, that doesn't even allow for 2 routers to be bridged. One model that still has the old interface and allows WDS bridging is AX6000 - get it while you can.

  • @MikeNovelli

Broadcasting as in sending the signal out. You can choose either the 5 or the 2.4 but not both. Some older routers may only have 2.4 Whichever you choose is the signal that is going to be bridged and since 5Ghz should be a faster connection I use the 5. But the 2.4 is likely to penetrate further. If you are going thru a bunch of walls or when you survey you see 5Ghz connection much weaker than the 2.4Ghz you might want to choose the 2.4 However, the 2.4 on my main router is still broadcasting. Whichever you choose will not preclude the original router from broadcasting that other signal.

Try to find an app that will allow you to scan your current network for IP addresses. Each device is going to have its own. Most devices will automatically dynamically change their address when connecting, but you can set a static IP address for a device and have it keep that address always. you do not need to use 69. You just need to use a number between 2 and 255, but it's likely better to avoid 255, 254 and even anything over 200. Your main network device is going to typically assign itself a 1. I avoid 0 as well. Run a scan and see what all the devices on your network look like. There are free apps for smartphones, pcs, etc. Some will even identify the device by manufacturer and model. Hope that helps. Copy paste is good enough if it gets you up an running. But you can definitely change it from the Internet's favorite number if you want.

That "run" is just saying it's connected to the other router/gateway. You would need to configure the internet on the router that is being repeated using this process. This process is not for the router that connects to the internet, it's for the repeater that connects back to the main router. If your main router doesn't have internet, neither will any devices connected to the repeater.

Any help or input would be much appreciated. Thanks

If by hard wire you mean running an ethernet cable to the RJ45 connector then you shouldn't have to worry about any of this. The router will use the built in switch to act like a normal switch for anything connected to the ethernet ports and the router can send a signal to act as a wireless access point on the same network if it is hard wired back to the original source. If you mean that you want to use the ethernet ports on the back of the router to receive signal but have the router connect to the network of a different device wirelessly then yes, the last step that they forgot should enable you to plug into the RJ45 ports with an ethernet cable and connect to the network/internet. Hope this helps.

Ok thank you. I will see what happens once I receive my new router. I am just having problems with two routers on the same system currently and I am getting a double nat signal so I heard that bridge mode on the second router will prevent but my current second router does not have that option. Hence the new router purchase
