Then the monthly updates stopped... then subscription was cancelled.. then all the Asheron's Call team were either laid off or transferred to other departments, then AC was silently killed, the community wanted to buy the game IP but WB never replied, just acted as though AC never existed. Right, KSP2 is almost certainly dead. They might put out a final patch before it all goes dark but I'd be surprised if it's much more than that. They won't talk about it, they're not going to officially say it's dead, you'll probably still even be able to buy it on steam. However no more significant work will be done on it; it'll just be silently abandoned. This is how the industry works.

To be fair, they paid 70+ people for five years to make a game and all we have is something that is vastly inferior to the original product in every way apart from better default graphics, with zero of the selling point features implemented like interstellar travel, multiplayer etc. The original release was made by a handful of people in months... I cant blame the publisher for shitcanning the project, they should have done so after the first 1-2 years without a MVP to demo. If you want my opinion (and you probably dont), they hired all the wrong people to make this game, a bunch of wide eyed liberals who "effin loves science" who spend 5 years implementing nonsense sci fi drives that are still not in the game. They should have hired the OG developer, why they didnt I just dont understand...

There's too much work to do and too little of the team that could have been left in the best case. I'm not saying PD can't shove something out and call it 1.0, but it won't be anything remotely close to what was promised. There might be enough WIP that a skeleton team can release the patch that was already on the way, and eventually get the second star system finished with basic interstellar in place That could buy enough good will for PD to keep stalling until there is an opportunity to have someone else resume the work. That seems like their (and ours at this point) best case scenario.

So I'm one of the fools who recently bought KSP2 on sale around the time of the latest update about 0.2.2, based on the belief that at least some of the stuff they roadmaped would actually come out. I couldn't care less about multiplayer, but I think it would be nice if there was some more unique content over KSP1. For me, the colonies and interstellar updates would be the minimum for me to be "happy" with it.

All we need to do is look at what happened to Duke Nukem Forever. The main issue with that game before it was closed down was simply that it took forever to get it released as the developers wanted to add so much to one small version.

  • @ET_AYY_LMAO

I think Duke Nukem Forever is kinda different. It was originally meant to be a build engine game (so same graphic style as duke3d), but then quake became such a success and full blown polygonal 3D graphics became the standard, then they shit canned the build engine game to do a new fangled 3D game, and that just took so long that by the time it was nearly done, it looked shit compared to what was on market, so they had to start all over or something like that. Duke3D just happened to hit a very turbulent period in terms of graphics hardware and what was considered baseline for a game at the time, duke3d was an enormous success and had become a huge franchise, so it couldn't just have been a build engine game, though I think fans would have loved it that way...

Posted this to Bellular, but it fits here too: This shit with KSP 2 is a damn shame. It has all the bones now of a good game, once they fixed the wobbly rockets, but even that was like pulling teeth to get them to do it. And all the while Nate Simpson is saying how they can't put down the test builds of the game. There was no follow through, they acted like we would just wait forever for the game to get good. There's plenty of Indy games that do updates weekly and monthly, religiously, even while working on other projects. Intercept had 7 years and barely reached parity with the base game of its predecessor. Sure, it probably looked like a mountain of fixes but that's why you just need to start and release fixes, so people see you're doing something. weekly updates with 5 fixes would have been better than waiting months in between updates. I'm so sure Intercept is going to work super hard between now and June 28 to push out that last feature update. (sarcasm) Why the F would they bother when these devs know they're done in a few weeks, apathy level 9000 right there. Frankly, they should probably not include that they worked on KSP2 on their resume in their next interview, and Nate should probably find work in anything other than games for a while. His credibility is below zero now, good luck with that. I'm glad T2 pulled the plug, maybe now they can get a decent studio on this game.

I loved building bases on Mun and Duna, I liked how they evolved, how I needed to make custom utility vehicles to assemble and move around modules, I liked making a home from home for exploration and science, send payloads of mini vtols to test etc, build "rail cannons" and send kerbals to orbit with a jet pack. The colony system looked straight up boring and something made to simplify basebuilding to the point where its just boring.

Well maybe no one is directly talking about it that way, but it does put it more in perspective. For instance if it was still Star Theory working on KSP2 then it would the chance of KSP2 being saved would be very slim. What I'm getting at is that Take-Two is making the game, meaning they might be more inclined to finish it because of sunken cost. To what degree it's going to be finished is still up in the air though.

A key factor is that the company can always change its mind and not lay off the full 70 employees, as a matter of compliance companies will often file for the max headcount to cover their bases and have flexibility during their reorg. While it is not exactly good news, it is not _necessarily_ the nail in the coffin everyone is making it out to be.

Based on the information provided in the KZread video , it appears that Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Private Division which is the publisher of Kerbal Space Program 2 (KSP2), has laid off 5% of its staff, including some from the Private Division team. This has raised concerns about the future development of KSP2. The video suggests that the layoffs may impact the development of KSP2, as the game has already faced several delays and the layoffs could further slow down the progress. However, the video also notes that the developers have stated that the layoffs will have a "minimal" impact on the game's development, implying that there is still hope for the game's continued progress . Given the uncertainty surrounding the layoffs and their potential impact on KSP2, it is difficult to provide a definitive answer on the game's future. The video does not offer any clear indication of whether the game's development will be significantly affected or if the project will ultimately be able to move forward as planned. The best that can be said is that there is still some hope for KSP2, but the situation remains uncertain and will likely depend on how the developers and publisher navigate the challenges posed by the layoffs.

Imho the problem with KSP2 is that in the current state with such an ambitious roadmap further production seems expensive and time consuming to say the least. So for a publisher focused on cutting expenses it's not worth continuing development. That said they cannot afford cancelling the game for most sales went probably via Steam, and they would face refunds. So i suppose they will probably reorganize the development team with focus on bugfixes and colony content, than release v 1.0 without further features and depending on the sales put the rest of the roadmap in future dlcs. Hope I'm wrong though.

@Boxer_Roo Yes that's true, but in that case the planet would spin so slow, it would be Impossible to get in geostationary orbit. But what if you are at the Lagrange point and the planet is between you and a star. I guess that will work, and since the planet is tidally locked, you will always be above a fixed point on the planet. Don't know if you can call that "geostationary orbit" though

Its really tough because I know a lot of companies in tech or tech adjacent are majorly hurting in profits at the moment... Even in the aerospace realm, a lot of the interesting startups were dependent on big tech investments, and those have dried up. I'm just about to graduate as an Aerospace Engineer, and its crazy how little jobs there are in aerospace at the moment. That and all the job and inflation reports coming in are looking big bad. I guess what im saying is, its sad to see this happen, but also not entirely surprising. They've just bad lucked into a real bad time to be in charge of an ambitious project that's fallen overbudget and overdue.

I am almost certain this anouncement has more or less trashed take 2's earnings, and since if they cancel the game they pretty much have to hand out refunds or never have anyone buy another one of their games things will be interesting.

You assume KSP2 has a far larger playerbase than t actually does

Nobody is gonna care in a week. And the KSP community will get around this too and keep playing if they continue development, even with its problem the only viable competition to KSP2 is still KSP1, most other games in the genre struggling to offer anything that makes them more interesting than KSP. There's no other alternative, that's why it hurts to see KSP2 in development hell.

So sad that this has to happen. KSP2 did have lots of potential, it was on the right track and the devs were working hard on it. I hope that everything goes well for everyone affected by these layoffs.
