the fact they just deleted the third row from a three row crossover (cx90) and named it a whole new model, and touting that it is larger than the competitoion is hilarious. it's 8 inches longer than the rx. i love mazda, but come on, this should just be a cx90 with the third row delete option

The CX 70 was also on our list to replace my wife’s car. But I found out a couple months ago. It is just a CX 90 without a third row. We were led to believe that it was going to be somewhere between the CX5/50 and the 90. So now it’s not on the list. Too bad because I really like these Mazdas.

Exactly. Guess they made the decision to save the hundreds of millions of dollars in developing a new model, but as a result, this is a huge nothing burger. Won’t handle better or be any quicker than the CX-90, and may have marginally more cargo room. For a brand that cares about driving experience, this makes zero sense. What’s even funnier is watching the automotive press perform the obligatory gushing over…….a CX-9- with two rows……

If they came out with this car first, and then the cx90 added a 3rd row, everyone would be complaining that the 90 is too small. Because they came out with the 90 first, and deleted a row for the 70, everyone is crapping on this car. Either way, these are nice cars. And the storage under the cargo area is nice

@DWK33 the problem with the Cx90 is that it is the size of a grand highlander with the interior space of a highlander. For most people, that makes no sense. There are many people in the multiple cx5/50 forums who are looking to upsize to a larger two row or three row crossover, but the 90 is just too plain big and space inefficient.

3000-5000 pounds is not payload it’s towing max of a trailer. I’m talking about payload…meaning max tongue weight allowed plus cargo and passengers. Consideration of tongue weight of the trailer, cargo plus passengers, one could overload the suspension and be very dangerous. Not to mention illegal. If one crashes into others with an overloaded vehicle and or trailer, insurance may not pay. Max tow ability is only one part of the towing equation. If your trailer weights 5000 pounds and has a 700 pound tongue weight I doubt you could tow a packed unibody SUV. If cargo is 500 pounds and two adults weight 300 pounds the payload is 700+500+300 or 1500 pounds. That’s 1/2 ton truck payload. Be careful with max tow weight manufacturer ratings. It’s deceiving.

I would totlaly pick an x5 over this CX70. OVer time the Mazda is going to not only feel worn out but fit and finishes are not going to hold up. The drive in the CX90 was not engaging at all.

Nothing wrong with really, but what I wanted when I heard cx70 was something midway between a cx5/50 and a cx90 which this is not. The phev range is on the low end of being useful but at least an option. I personally don’t like the rounded rear end design at all.

I am a Mazda fan for sure but I have to say….This is rare fail for Mazda USA. Not sure why the CX-60 was not just stretched out for our market and made the CX-70…This is much too large to be a sporty two rear drive CUV. The size more competes with the X7 not the X5…IMHO.

It's a sharp looking car from about the front to the rear door, then the design really takes a nose dive. It begins to look more akin to a minivan with that egg d pillar shape that really screams soccer mom. It's a ton of room, but for most commutes, no one needs that much. And with the 2-3 sq ft of room underneath, is it really that much of a differentiator to call it a different model than simply buying the CX-90 and having the flexibility by putting the third row down and up? I mean the cupholders and rear leg vents are still in the CX-70. The CX-70 name plate should have been reserved for an actual different model that is actually more sporty both by design and tuning, but not just colors and fake vents...

@@kvetcha storage bins for what?? Have you ever seated inside a CX90? They are useless if not as cupholders, they are too small. If the car was done on purpose they would have tried to shape a bit differently the cargo to maximize practicality. They didn’t do and this is why this car makes little sense as a standalone model. Could have been an option to tick in CX90lineup

Headline: "CX-70 Is a Surprising Luxury Car" Really? It's just a 2-row version of the CX-90, which you have reviewed multiple times... so not sure how the CX-70 is surprising. Same idea as Honda Passport vs Pilot. The CX-90 has not gone over well sales-wise, so I don't think this is going to do a whole lot better. Nice interiors for sure, but lacking in the most important aspects of a family hauler... space and ergonomics. Overpriced too.
