Unwanted Subaru Eyesight Braking

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

4 times I have experienced unwanted activation of the EyeSight automatic pre-collision braking system on my 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx XT. (expand for direct links to each example)
#4 actually happened to me again this morning during my commute! :-(
I’ve read about others’ experiences but couldn’t find much documentation online, so I decided to make this video.

The Subaru Eyesight Auto Braking is driving me crazy. New 2022 Subaru Outback Limited. You can turn it off for one drive, the system auto defaults to ON each restart.

We had a 2018 Forester Touring with eyesight that reacted similarly yo your experiences, particularly the first scenario. Since we had one of the earlier eyesight systems, there was no way to adjust sensitivity. The only way avoid the system engaging was to adjust your driving style. Keep in mind, unlike us (the human driver), eyesight cannot tell if the object it's closing on is turning out of the way; all it knows is that something's in front of it and it's closing on the object quickly. The only workaround I could figure out is that if I recognized that a vehicle in front of me would turn off, I would let off the accelerator and very gently apply minimal breaking; so minimal that the car actually wouldn't slow much, if at all; sort of just touching the brake pedal a few of millimeters. Eyesight monitors the brake pedal and what I found is that if it detects me "beginning" to apply braking (even if it's very slight braking) it would not engage emergency braking as prematurely as it would if I had not applied slight pressure to the brake pedal. In other words, by applying slight pressure to the brake pedal you're indicating to the eyesight system that you see what's going on and that you've begun to react, so the system will step back a bit until is really thinks you're gonna crash. That's my thoughts from my experiences with our Touring. Not sure if it's ACTUALLY how the system works, so don't take my observations as gospel/official. We traded the Touring for a Toyota and it's AEB system isn't as sensitive as the Forester's. I can approach cars turning off as I normally would without the system taking over. Enjoy and be safe out there!

Sometimes you have to override the system by putting your foot on the accelerator when it's being too sensitive. You make some great points in this video

Re: your situation with the turning car, I had a somewhat similar event in a parking lot where I was entering with a right turn while another vehicle was exiting with a complementary left turn. The Eyesight system interpreted the complementary turns as a potential collision and performed a very hard brake. Very surprising - but mostly I can adjust my driving along the lines you suggest and although I think the system will be tweaked in coming years I'm OK living with it now as it is. I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages - for me that's the bottom line. Other people can certainly reach different conclusions, and that's totally ok. We're in the middle of a technological transition, and different opinions are almost guaranteed.

Great video, man! I rented an Outback w/ Eyesight for a month...and I did not realize I could switch it off. Good to know! I experienced the scenario of the car in front of me making a right turn...and the system freaked out. It's extremely frustrating. My particular interest is disabling the adaptive portion of cruise control. I just want the old fashioned cruise control. I need to figure out whether Subaru gives this option...

Great video. I drive 500 miles weekly with a 2019 Impreza. Almost 100% interstate. Almost always using adaptive cruise control. Interesting that when a car changes lanes very close in front of me but accelerating, eyesight recognizes this and no change in speed. But when a car turns off (right) on a city street, the adaptive cruise panics and slows rapidly long after it should have recognized the car was no longer a danger or the lane was clear. Happens enough I've adaptive my driving.

Random braking is the second biggest complaint I have. You nailed four of the predictable random braking, which all happen often while commuting. The fifth predictable random braking happens 90% of the time at a specific corner that I take daily. The stupid car jams it's brakes on as I excelerate thru the corner which is horrible for traffic safety, gas mileage, and tire wear. I made an effort to turn the stupid system off for a month (which has to be programed at the start of each trip, as it defaults to taking control), and my gas mileage increased by 5%! Same goes for the cruise control. That drops the gas mileage by 2-3% because it was programmed so horribly. BTW, my number one biggest complaint is the front seats feel like a 2x4 supporting part of the saddle at my back bone. This is due to super stiff foam padding that doesn't match the softer padding in the saddle.

Seriously thanks a bunch for uploading. Love your wooden cars really beautiful, love the walnut wood for the eyesight one haha. Love the creativity! Really considering a Forester - How is the lane keep assist functioning in night? btw I know that it can detect the eyes/activity and if you seem to be fallen asleep it will activate but what does it to later with the car, like does it stops or does it narrow you to the side of the road and stop that I know VAG-cars do? Ofc bro and looking forward to new stuff!

Thanks, that means a lot! Unfortunately I can’t answer your questions, since I haven’t used active lane keeping assist at all and my model doesn’t have the driver attention monitor thing. I will say the headlights are ridiculously bright and adjusted too high, so one of my next videos will be adjusting the headlight level (shines into the cabin of others cars, and people are always flashing their lights at me). But because the lights are so good I’d think the night performance of lane centering should be good. Thank you for your kind comment!

I've tested the automatic breaking feature driving forward a little until I had barely no choice but to apply the breaks and so far, I have not detected the Subaru breaking or alerting me. I did connect the Subaru to wifi so its possible there was some update I got that minimized this. In any case, I wouldn't depend on this feature. The lane departure feature works some of the time and the blind spot detection both backing up and switching lamps works all of the time. Im quite happy with the safety systems so far but I'd like to also see the abs work.

I would like to totally disable all eyesight features permanently in our 2020 Forester. We didn't have a choice when we purchased it - but that doesn't mean that I have to use it either. I did remove the annoying chime from the gauge cluster and that helps tremendously.

These examples don’t sound to me like the system is malfunctioning. Be sure to give yourself enough space between other drivers and many of these examples can be avoided. Pre-collision braking operates in three stages. 1st just an audible warning, no brakes, 2nd , if you don’t respond it applies brakes to slow you down, 3rd, is emergency braking. This happens at the last second. If you haven’t responded at that final stage, it’s helping you to avoid a collision. You are always in control and can override the system. You can turn the volume down on the audible alarm if it’s bothersome. The EyeSight cameras sometimes “see” things in the environment as an “obstacle” that are not actually in your way. For example, the bottom of a steep hill, a large sign at the corner of a turn. The manual states that this is normal operation, the driver is always in control and to focus on safe driving. By the time you get to the bottom of the hill or move into the turn, it’s not a problem. There are certain situations you will need to turn off pre-collision braking for, driving through areas with low hanging branches, automatic car washes, etc. This information can be referenced in the EyeSight manual, I hope this helps. 😊

2020 Outback Onyx here. Experienced situation #1 a few times as well where I felt there was no need for the pre-collision braking to activate as there was still plenty of room between my car and the car turning in front. Interesting note was that the Eyesight in my 2015 Outback never did this so there is a chance that Subaru adjusted the Eyesight sensitivity for the 2020. Overall, the Eyesight in the 5th gen Outback certainly behaves less aggressive than the one in the new 6th gen Outback.

I never had any problems of those in the video but I can only bring positive examples: - a car stopped in front of me immediately because the driver saw an incoming ambulance and the eyesight stopped my car on time. - I was backing up an I didn’t see a car and the eyesight avoided me an expensive accident. Most of the times my eyesight just brakes gradually and a cool red target appears on the display saying to slow down and most of the times I break simultaneously when that happens and the Eyesight leaves me the control of the car but it never brings my car to a complete stop unless necessary and it does that really well, at least mine seems to be calibrated to perfection and I am very glad and happy with that. Ps. I have a Legacy 2021.

  • @Starspiker

I wonder if it has to do with the size of the car. An Outback and a Forester will take longer/need more braking force to stop than an Impreza or a Legacy since they’re heavier cars, so on the heavier cars it’s more likely to apply harder brakes causing the grinding noise.

I had a bizarre incident while luckily the only one on the road. I saw what looked like a dead or dying rodent on the road and really did not pay much attention to it. Suddenly, from the back of my Ascent, a eagle swooped down right in front of me to snatch up the rodent. I was going 40 mph. As the bird became visible on my windshield, the emergency braking system went into full stopping as the bird swooped down right in front of me to get the dead rodent. No injuries or problems. Just that i was very startled for a moment.

Phantom braking is an issue in every brand of car that uses an auto braking system. These systems aren’t perfect and I feel it will be a while before they improve much. I’ve had a few events where I felt the auto braking should have kicked in but it didn’t in my Subaru Outback. Reasons like this are why people need to drive the car just like they would if they didn’t have these systems.

Had mine activate the other morning on my 2021 Legacy. It beeped at me and applied the brakes a little. Just wondering if the street light reflecting on the road surface and a little bit of fog is what might have set it off. I DMed dash cam video of it happening to Subaru. I think everybody should do the same. It might be helpful in solving this issue. Had only about 2,100 miles when it happened. It may never happen again. Who knows?

So there's a beach ball or a cardboard box or some crap that fell off a truck maybe the only option is to just run it over or attempt to anyway and the car tries to stop you and you get rear ended?

You can always stick something like a post it note to the camera housing (just not the lens itself). The car will realize it can’t see and disable the Eyesight features. Then if you’re going on a long trip and want the adaptive cruise control and whatnot, you can easily take them off. Not the most elegant solution, but a solution nonetheless.

Here's an opposite event -- when Eyesight should have braked, but didn't!: Traveling with Eyesight on a busy state road with lots of traffic and traffic lights. Big pickup truck in front of me pulling a 25' long, but low, flat-bed trailer with no cargo on back, stops for a red light. The Eyesight saw the pickup truck but not the trailer, and if I didn't brake the car, it would have continued until it hit the back of the trailer. Lesson learned: Eyesight is amazing, but not perfect, so always be vigilant.

Situation 1 & 3 sounds like you were very close to the turning vehicle in front. I have an Onyx and have had a couple of minor situations where the eyesight has momentarily been spooked and briefly freaked, but it’s never slammed the brakes on or brought the vehicle to a standstill. I have more worrisome moments with the ACC, especially on highways when a vehicle merges in front of me and it takes a second for eyesight to pick-up the merging vehicle.
