Unusually Rapid Reversal of Polar Vortex from Sudden Stratospheric Warming

Ғылым және технология

Beginning around March 4th, there was a very rapid reversal of the Arctic Polar Vertex via a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) of over 50 C.
This reversal started as a splitting (bifurcation) of the counter clockwise (ccw) polar vortex, resulting in two meshed gears: one ccw and the other clockwise (cw).
The cw gear soon dominated, as the usual ccw one weakened. This continued throughout the month of March, and in early April we have the usual ccw Polar Vortex being established.
I show these transitions using Earth Nullschool and try to explain what is happening. During the reversed state, ozone was pulled upward setting record high levels in basically a “reverse ozone hill” versus the usual “ozone hole” over Antarctica.
Also, it looks like the reversals are much more common during both the El Niño and La Niña states, and not common during the neutral “El Nothing” state.
Climate change is certainly never boring!!

Someone should do a blog about turbulence events on jet travel. Swiss media used to have stories about planes landing with passengers injured, but they have stopped publishing these types of events. It's definitely related to the fact that they lost their case in the ICJ (I think) and are guilty of inaction for the climate crisis.

Tx for the update. A weather enthusiast has to think in 4 dimensions and often counter-intuitively - your explanations really help the rest of us understand this weather & climate stuff. It's a little freaky to learn how humans are now starting to change Earth systems in a really significant ways, ie in ways we previously thought were not possible. Sabine Hossenfelder has just done a video on how humans have altered the rate of the Earth's spin awa it's tilt etc via pumping excessive amounts of groundwater & global warming. We actually have very little knowledge about the interconnectiveness of all things (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrophere, biosphere, geosphere etc) and I think there may be a lot of "surprises" for us down the road - and its not going to be pretty! Happy days...

@@anhumblemessengerofthelawo3858 What What you have to understand is that the current trajectory we are on does not include either of these. So you can’t just state it like a matter of fact, because it isn’t something that is actively being pursued by any government. In fact, every single global governmental summit has failed to accomplish even the bare minimum agreement that climate change event exists….. So it’s easy to say “geo-engineering” like it is a foregone conclusion… but the reality is that that is NOT likely to happen. Why? Because with the trajectory the planet is on right now, even if the entire planet immediately started building climate change solutions tomorrow, the climate is not going to magically stabilize WITHIN OUR LIFETIME. Seriously, understand that. The ENTIRE OCEAN has absorbed so much heat, that there is just not enough time in our lifetime to reflect enough of the sun’s radiation away from the planet, fast enough for the planet to cool in our lifetime. Think about that. Even if the planet went into a nuclear winter tomorrow, and 90% of the sun’s radiation was reflected back into space, what would happen to all of the heat energy that is currently held in the planet’s oceans? It will continue to race towards equilibrium. All ocean ice will melt. Understand the implications. Do you know how much ice the planet has melted? And is melting FAST. Do you know why it’s heating fast? Because the oceans are HOT. And when the ocean ice is gone, that heat will still exist. And when the poles can no longer cool the planet’s temperatures……. The heat has nowhere to go. Please don’t just assume someone is fixing something because they aren’t.

Though ironically there is a parallel between what the 'lord giveth' and what he taketh away, in as far as atoms ultimately get recycled. Five aeons hence, the sun will become a red giant as it continues to consume the last of its hydrogen fuel, ultimately likely becoming a 'Brown Dwarf'... The Earth will have long since been consumed in the process... So, here neither the Earth (Mercury/Venus), the moon or the sun itself are 'eternal'. It's been said if we stopped it all today it would take 200 years of rest to bring it down 1 degree and if volcanic activities continue it will make zero difference as those volcano emissions historically swing the earth into an ice age without any human emissions. Basically you are just along for the ride and we don't actually have any control at all. Sure we can try but it will never stop the earth going through its long cycles.

Syntropic Agriculture is based on utilizing trees etc., to help create Microclimates where all your plants and trees have purpose beyond just food. I have a Fig tree that I'm putting in just outside the garden to help shade it until the Bamboo matures. Single row gardening is getting harder to do because of the changes that are happening, the plants just can't withstand current conditions.

    - We live in the same climate as it was 5 million years ago - I have an explanation regarding the cause of the climate change and global warming, it is the travel of the universe to the deep past since May 10, 2010. Each day starting May 10, 2010 takes us one thousand years to the past of the universe. Today April 11, 2024 the state of our universe is the same as it was 5 million and 85 thousand years ago. On october 13, 2026 the state of our universe will be at the point 6 million years in the past. On june 04, 2051 the state of our universe will be at the point 15 million in the past. On june 28, 2092 the state of our universe will be at the point 30 million years in the past. On april 02, 2147 the state of our universe will be at the point 50 million years in the past. The result is that the universe is heading back to the point where it started and today we live in the same climate as it was 5 million years ago. Mohamed BOUHAMIDA.
