Theory: The first two of these were the devs experimenting with how you would exit WMotR, since both featuring him entering from the skylight. The third *could* be an initial idea from getting the key off of BitDW, before that gained a nice animation. Fourth was either just a test for what would happen with that animation at ground level, *or* just how the game's beginning state was before they made a warp that made him stand by default.
@hubguy
Жыл бұрын
Probably wrong but to me the third is current BitFS but the only difference being spawning you right outside the door to do the animation. Your first thought when beating BitDW is to use the key on the upper floor doors only to realize it worked for the basement. Once you beat BitFS you know for sure where that key goes and it’s a longer distance from BitFS to the door, so you’re taken right to the door to finally achieve what you wanted to do since BitDW. Almost like a “ok we’re getting close to the end now” kind of deal I guess lol
@holdingpattern245

could just be things put in there for the convenience of programmers and testers, like the test levels hidden in the code of Mario games, and the triggers were removed for the game release but not the warps themselves
@Gardivanyth
Жыл бұрын
Quick correction, the skylight stage is the Wing Cap stage, not WMotR (that one is on the third floor of the castle & falling off puts you on the castle grounds). But yeah, extremely likely they were to be used in the event of Mario losing a life in the cap stage. Maybe they thought it was too punishing for new players & hence you don't lose lives in the stage.

I'm still somewhat convinced that Wing Mario Over The Rainbow was one of the early developed courses and it was supposed to take place outside, and also if Mario fell, spawn him back at the castle grounds. Why do I think it was early dev? It also contains some of the obscure Hangable Ceilings, which also appear in BBB and the castle grounds. All later hangable ceilings only appear as clearly demarcated grates and trellises.

@AjaxGb

I believe the game only contains one uncolored coin texture which is shared by all coin types (yellow, red, and blue) and is tinted by each using vertex colors. I'd guess they all use the same rendering code and each passes in a different color value, so Pannen can just tell the warp entity to use the same code but with a different color.

If i had to guess: The 2 in the middle of the foyer are likely unused fail-states for the wing-cap switch stage. The one at the key door might have something to do with the first bowser stage? And the one outside might be some way for developers to quickly spawn into the game without having to use the opening cutscene. That being said, im not an expert by any means, but these just make the most sense to me.

They couldn't decide where or how he should spawn, so they programmed everything, picked one, and didn't take the rest of the code out. I do wonder...were they thinking "No one will know, this is easier" or "People will be so confused in the future" 😂

I swear the first two you pointed out I’ve seen used: When you fall into the sky in the Tower of the Wing Cap (just above you, where you hit the big red button to activate the wing cap), it spits you out on your cheeks with no HP loss When you drown in The Secret Aquarium (just outside Jolly Roger Bay), you technically already drowned, so it spits you out with 1 “additional” HP in the center room, which seems to drain you to 1 HP if you go from full health. Maybe there are part of the other 99 minus what you listed, but I’m curious! Do you think that those hex codes are potentially referenced in the code, but not directly? Maybe they’re doing something sketchy and excessively proprietary, as Nintendo loves to do 😂 - just the first sketchy possibility that comes to my head is concatenating two string characters together then treating the result as a hex value - this wouldn’t work to do a reverse lookup on the codebase for those values, but would still allow usage of them.

@hubguy
Almost like a “ok we’re getting close to the end now” kind of deal I guess lol

could just be things put in there for the convenience of programmers and testers, like the test levels hidden in the code of Mario games, and the triggers were removed for the game release but not the warps themselves

The ones in the foyer were likely for the Wing Cap stage, so it makes sense. I can't really explain the one at the locked door, maybe for testing, but I think the one on the castle grounds might be there because someone accidentally set it to a stage entrance and forgot to delete it

The second unused warp is more common in ROM hacks (Star Revenge as the example for its usage) but I've never knew what they exactly were and their functions in Toad's Tool 64 and Quad64. What a missed opportunity to have them scrapped.
Imagine a SM64 randomizer that randomizes not only the warps, but randomized the position of the warp. Like, you start a level from where the flight cap in the first level. You die, and warp from a one up on the final Bowser level, etc.

I wonder how many shorts it will take until we finally go through every single little factoid about the game. maybe we'll get one about the wing cap tower
I wish everyone, even non gamers, could understand how far ahead of its time this game was..it was a brilliant masterpiece of code created with such few technological resources relative today's games. In my several years studying coding and realizing the challenge of creating just basic games like basic tower defense, here is Nintendo putting out a 3d open world game in the fuggin 90's. Wild

Fun fact: in sm64excoop, a SM64 online game made by fans with a sm64 rom, the last warp is used when a player lost all of his lifes, because there is no Game Over screen
These shorts are awesome, man! Very entertaining plus a cool way to get smaller bits of content out without having to pour a taxing amount of energy into a full video.
It can be assumed that before the stairs existed, developers created warp points to get from the first floor to the next upper floor.

I am so happy we're back to commentated
my guesses = wing cap tower and mario wings over the rainbow were onc mless forgiving and took a life when you fall. In the final game you fall unharmed, from warps very close to these. they probablymdidnt bother removing the old warp animations when they did that, and instead simply reassigned the levels andmleft the old data.
Even lesser known fact is mario is a powerful psyker and can open new warps whenever he wants.
I really like your SM64 shorts!
Seems likely to me, at least for the first two, that you were originally intended to lose a life if you failed Wing Cap Tower or Secret Slide but Nintendo probably saw it as too harsh of a punishment and removed them
i wouldent be suprised if the first or second one would of been an earlier version of returning from the wing cap coutse via falling
I would have never imagined they left these in.

Is the sprite for the pink coin built into the game, or is it a modification? Or is the color of the coin determined using code that you can alter yourself? It definitely makes a convenient marker.
@AjaxGb

Never heard Foyer pronounced like that and then so many times in a row 😂
Some of these are actually used as teleports for when you lose in levels like the one that gets rid of a life and regenerates your health
Instead of asking technical questions they won't give af about. I'd like to see what they think of kaze emuar and this guy and how far they push and look into the game. I wonder if theyd be impressed how much people love and look into their old 30 year old code
The first one could be the secret warp zone they found while working on the drain.
why is this content so interesting
the whole game was within a painting the whole time
Thank you. My life is better now knowing this
I think can imagine what the first two warps were for.
The fourth warp outside looks like it gets used when you start a save file up.
that unused spawn in the castle is from a game over menu
I feel that unused warp shown at 0:28 that spawns Mario in the foyer in backwards air knockback action should've been used when you die in The Princess's Secret Slide and Tower Of Wing Cap when falling down the bottomless pit and while taking a life with it, it would've made since. I don't know what the point was of dying in those two levels and not losing a life and just spawning back into the castle like nothing happened.
Love me some pannenkoek shorts
Loving all these commentated videos!
The 2nd one where there's no knock back is probably the only one I knew.cuz of all the rom hacks I played
the first one would be actually pretty cool, if it were used with the "Mario over the Wing cap" course
I'm guessing these warps were meant to be an unused way to go back to Peach's Castle.
I feel like I have seen a couple of them in SM64DS.

What about the spawn where he just appears in the sun in the foyer? There's no action, no no elaborate entry, he's just there.
At least 3 of those are used in the game…the start of the game spawn, and I’ve been spit out of the other 2 the bowser door idk. But they just because they don’t have index’s doesn’t mean they aren’t used
I can't say for sure, because i haven't played sm64 in ... literally over a decade... but i do specifically remember getting the 'knocked back' into the foyer animation at some point... but it's not like i have any proof, i never even owned the game... so i'm probably just full of it, unless there's another animation that's similar?
Is everything a fkn object 😂 Jesus
I think if you look at the sm64 beta footage those unused spawns will be found like the unused peach castle in one of the game's pics mario was standing in front of the star door that has been changed to the key door and the losing the life in middle of the castle I think was scraped that I think was when mario falls of peach's secret slide (not secret anymore) instead of him landing in the castle just fine he was supposed to lose a life like any other level
@sdg4diamondking740
9 ай бұрын
And I also think they used them to position mario in the game to take the screenshots
The first 2 seem like unused warps for maybe dieing in the wing cap area
Pannen, can you or someone more well-versed answer a question? In CCM, why is there no “exiting the CCM slide” warp? It is there for other courses with sub-areas that can be entered/exited, like SL, TTM, and THI.
Maybe they’re doing something sketchy and excessively proprietary, as Nintendo loves to do 😂 - just the first sketchy possibility that comes to my head is concatenating two string characters together then treating the result as a hex value - this wouldn’t work to do a reverse lookup on the codebase for those values, but would still allow usage of them.
he's back fr fr
I’m just here wondering whether or not the fourth floor exists
I feel like I have seen these used. I think it was the idle start screen when they preview gameplay before starting the game. I could be wrong tho.
I'm honestly glad they changed their minds about the player losing a life for failing the wing cap tower stage.
US pronunciation of foyer is wild
