I’m kinda disappointed this didn’t make it in in some form, maybe just as a normal story event and not as his awakening. Him talking about how he missed his revenge was interesting, I feel this conversation would’ve fleshed out Akechi a bit more during the third semester, and show why he despised Maruki so much, since he reminded him of Shido. Also really interesting that they voiced this as well.

That's honestly something I don't quite understand. Akechi thinks Dr. Maruki is the same as Shido, but Shido's intentions were to hurt anybody and everybody to get what he wanted, while Dr. Maruki only wanted to put an end to everyone's hurting by creating a new reality. I must be missing something because I see no real similarities between Shido and Maruki here. They both look and act just as different as day and night.

@@oldchannelforayoungstupidf2649 The similarity between the two is that, like Shido, Maruki wants to change the world on a grand scale HIS way, regardless of how other people might feel. The only real difference between them is what their end goals were. Maruki's goals, on the surface, seem a lot more altruistic than Shido's, but if you stop and look at the ways that both Maruki and Shido went about trying to achieve these goals, and the mindset that they have when faced with opposition, you can kinda see how they're similar. With both characters, there's no consideration (at least from what I was able to gleam when playing) for the consequences of their actions, and how it affects the people around them. Shido manipulated people around him (ie. Akechi, the SIU director, etc.) through threats and promises of power. Maruki manipulates literally everyone in Japan after he awakens to his Persona, and even before that, he manipulates Sumire by using his power on her to make her think that she's her dead sister, and manipulates Joker into assisting him with his research by playing dumb about him being able to use the Metaverse. Also, when Joker, Akechi and Sumire enter his palace for the first time in the third semester, he intentionally re-traumatizes Sumire by showing her a memory (that he made her repress using his powers btw) of her sister dying in front of her, in an attempt to get her on his side. I think the actions he takes with Sumire are particularly striking examples of the similarity, because you can clearly see that Maruki has no problem doing it as long as he believes that it will help him achieve "total happiness". In essence, both characters don't have any consideration for the consequences of HOW they try to achieve their goals. It's their way or the highway, and they'll do whatever they need to to get it. Hopefully this helps clear some stuff up

Or even using Sumire, a suicidally depressed teenager, while validating her feelings of worthlessness and convincing her no one truly cared about her. For good reasons or not, those acts are reprehensible. I’d argue that Maruki is up there with Shido and Yaldabaoth in capacity for atrocious acts.

I presume this was meant to have taken place after first visiting Maruki's Palace due to the lack of note regarding the other Phantom Thieves and at this stage it fits in with Akechi's demeanor towards the player. I can only assume the reason they cut this version is because is MASSIVELY gives away the reason Maruki bought Akechi.

Specifically because Joker had huge regrets for how their final encounter ended. However, the 25th anniversary interviews massively hinted at the fact Akechi did actually survive.

But he doesn't care "Are you saying I'm being illogical with this? I'm well awere'' ''But, it's how i feel, so there's nothing I can do about it'' This lines really make me admire Akechi's determination and honesty to stick to his ideals, even if they costs him his life (Like later with Maruki in 2/2). And I love how much he trusts Joker with this personal stuff. It really shows how much his friendship/rivalry with Joker matters to him. GOD THIS ONE IS SO GOOD TOO??? Like, okay, yes, original is good and angsty and it did it's job of making me feel very empathetic towards him. But this one???? It's good in the sense that they actually feel like they're friends! Or rivals. He actually gets somewhat of a conclusion in regards to Shido's downfall outside of the thieves den, and that he actually knows that he's being stupid and emotional when he gets jealous of Joker for beating Shido It feels more like a last (albeit very sassy and JEALOUS) farewell in Akechi's favourite jazz club rather than a sort of "oh hey I'm boutta leave leblanc but lemme unload all my anger about this reality before i go". I imagine that they got rid of this because they probably wanted to make Akechi's awakening automatic and they probably couldn't wiggle in a trip to the jazz club into the story. I just think this one fits more to Akechi's character, personally. (Also, can I just say 0:19, 1:03 and 2:17 ARE SO GOOD? Robbie, you're killing me with your voice acting MY LORD. We love Joker and Akechi rival dynamics in this household.)

I think the part I love best about this scene is just how... HONEST Akechi is being about his feelings here. He's not afraid to address his history with the protagonist, he's not afraid to thank him, and he's not afraid to admit that he's still bitter about some things (even though he'd much rather not be). Similar to the scene we got in the final version, it feels like I can truly respect and trust his integrity here.. for the first time. In fact, he's being even more explicit about how he feels here compared to his talk with Joker in Leblanc, even if it's all still there through subtext (for example, he says outright here that Maruki is no different than Shido in his eyes, but it's only heavily implied that this is how he feels in the final version). _"Nostalgic, eh? _*_*chuckles*_*_ You very well could be right. I'm remembering things that are a bit too bitter for me though..."_ _"Boy you are honest to a fault, aren't you?"_ _"Sorry, but I don't see it as a favor to me. If anything it's the exact opposite. After all, I lost my one shot at revenge."_ I love how Akechi's apology here is a genuine one. He wants to be wholly grateful to Joker for keeping his promise, but he can't control his jealousy and bitterness for not being the one take down Shido himself, even if it doesn't make total sense for him to still be hung up over it now. As he says: _"Are you saying I'm being illogical with this? I'm well aware."_ _"I know this isn't the reaction I'd usually have. But it's how I feel, so there's nothing I can do about it."_ This line in particular really sums up the scene best for me. One major change from the original comes toward the end: _"You're straightforwardness is quite aggressive. Actually it's to the point of irritation. I genuinely cannot comprehend how you live your life like that.. After speaking with you here though, I've come to a realization. I will never accept this form of reality. I'm done being manipulated. "_ Unlike in the final version, where Akechi is shown to already be unwavering and "aggressive" with his own resolve from the start (showing that he learned to stay true to his most honest principles during his last moments on Shido's ship, and thus tries his best to convince the protagonist not to abandon his ideals either), here it seems like he was inspired through their conversation after witnessing _Jokers_ conviction and straightforward mindset against Maruki's reality, rather than the other way around. In that sense, it's much more in-line with the other Phantom Thieves' third awakenings. Either way, he ends the conversation firmly declaring that his days of being a pawn are over. Very much an echo of his final words on Shido's ship (especially when looking at the original japanese diologue of that moment). "So, my final enemy is the puppet that I used to be. Not bad.."

That’s why honestly while this is good, the one they went with is so much better. Back in Persona 3, the SEES’s casts 3rd awakenings all came as a result of the plot and their own development rather than the protagonist being the one who does it by arbitrarily by reaching Rank 10 in their Social Links or Confidants and all the next persona awakenings. It makes the characters feel so much more alive and real when they can develop and grow outside of the protags influence, obviously there is influence even in 3, but less so that it makes it feel everyone is dependent on the protag. Akechi having this firmly rooted desire in his heart to stay true to his convictions to no longer be manipulated and have his free will be stripped away by living in a fantasy world concocted by someone else being alive due to outside influence rather than being alive because of his own decisions… It makes that resonate so much stronger than Joker inspiring Akechi to resolve himself to that. It feels much more organic and makes Akechi seem much more alive for it. Honestly this has a lot of great ideas in it, things they should’ve taken and kept, but overall in its current form this unused awakening was definitely better off unused since it feels to me to hurt his character more than it added. Even with the great bits of speaking of his revenge against Shido, him feeling bitter because of it even if he doesn’t want to, his serious respect for Joker, speaking of the confidant they added that that had the glove being thrown moment. It’s a great culmination of their relationship but at the same time harms a bit more because it boils down to ‘Joker causes final development in character’ that’s been rehashed since Persona 4 and makes it feel the characters are just dependent on him

I think this would have worked better if it wasn’t his third awakening, and took place shortly before the real infiltration of Maruki’s Palace with the team. Having reconciliation with Joker and Akechi, while he talks about his feelings regarding Shido is great, but it’s only tangentially related to this arc, and doesn’t really work for a third awakening because there isn’t really a big event that causes it, it feels like Akechi just decides to get another Persona just... because. So, if I was making this game, I would keep the first half of this scene and put it earlier, but keep the final version of Akechi’s third awakening as is.

  • @axios4702

To be honest, I like more his awakening at 2/2 right after talking with Maruki. I wasn't expecting him to have a 3rd form for his Persona, so seeing him suddenly evolve after making my choice to face the final palace no matter the cost hit extremely hard. It made me realise... Akechi was scared. He harbored doubts like all the others, but just hid it. He needed someone to support his decision, to tell him rejecting Maruki's offer and giving up his life was the right choice and he asked Joker to be that person. And when he was reassured and embraced the sacrifice he was about to make, he had his 3rd awakening. I love his 3rd persona too. It looks dark like Loki, but its heroic like Robin Hood, it is an anti-hero and it reflects Akechi finally finding his own justice. With your help, which I'm sure would piss him off if he realised it.

some people would say that him not being grateful for Joker doing his "favor" means that he's still ungrateful for Joker. Which is a lie. It's completely logical to think that you would've massively preferred to do the thing you've been planning from 3 years without wavering your conviction than a new opportunity given to you out of nowhere, sure, you wouldn't say that aloud, but I'm sure that no one would be grateful for someone doing what you've been trying to do for the last 3 years, even if you asked them to do so. You wouldn't feel exactly satisfied. Akechi's very straightforward and doesn't mince his feelings, so it's only logical he wouldn't mince that part of his feelings, he knows it's illogical but he can't do anything about it, which is true for many of our thoughts as humans. And Akechi is still grateful for Joker, I mean here he says that talking with him gives him great resolve and insight, it infuriates him but it also intrigues him. Joker's a great person for Akechi, who is his antithesis yet is willing to hear the thesis without any hatred or ill-will. PS: AHHH HE REMEMBERED THE GLOVE YESSSS.

Joker and Crow are my favorite anime rivals because it feels like a mix of the best parts of other anime rivals from Sasuke's desire for revenge and for Naruto to understand his pain, Kaiba's promise to defeat Yugi in a dual, Vegeta's pride and respect for Kakarot, Light and L's mental game of Chess, and Bakugo's irritation of Deku's ability to be surpass him. But what makes Akechi my favorite is because the ships are actually justified. Ok but in all seriousness it's also because of how Akechi always wanted to be a hero which is what his false atire represented and that he knew what he was doing was wrong but he believed that there was no turning back and if he met Ren years earlier maybe they wouldn't be forced to fight each other. Honestly every time I see Akechi in the 3rd semester I wish they had made P5R canon and Akechi lives so we could have his sass throughout Strikers. It would’ve been sweet/hilarious to watch him heal and grow with the PTs and to watch the welcome home scene when Protag(Ren) comes back to Leblanc and watch him unenthusiastically use a party popper and be like “why did I let you all talk me into this?” Not to mention we’d get more “everyday (ruthless) Akechi” in the jails. I would’ve loved to watch him rip into Zeinkichi too. You know he’d diss him nonstop lol.

@@naos8116 Agreed. Royal felt like the game Atlus wanted to make to begin with but ran out of time or resources to do so before the original release. In fact, I don't know of any reason to play the original P5 anymore. P5R is better in pretty much every way conceivable. What's more likely is that they started development on Strikers around the same time as Royal. They likely wanted to release both games back to back (which they pretty much did) to cash in on P5's success. So Omega Force likely had no idea what Atlus were planning to do with Akechi in Royal. In fact, I doubt they had much say in the story of P5S at all since it's an Atlus IP. So I don't think the story of P5S is indicative of what is and isn't canon. If they started development of Stikers after P5R, I think Akechi, Sumire, and Maruki would at least be mentioned in the game. TLDR: Omega Force couldn't make Strikers follow a story from a game that hadn't even been released yet so they followed the original P5 instead. That doesn't necessarily mean Royal isn't canon.

Ok, it's definitely an unused AWAKENING but this scene is definitely in the game. I took Akechi on a date to the jazz club after we secured the route to Maruki's treasure, and that's how I got it. I secured the route on 1/23, and after getting a massage from Kawakami so that I could wander around, I invited Akechi to the jazz club because I wanted to work on maxing his stats (in preparation for final Mementos grinding everyone to level 99). I got this exact scene, minus the awakening near the end. I stumbled upon it because I was trying to get his third awakening, so I went to the spot he hangout in Kichijoji to see if the opportunity would come up (I didn't know it would automatically happen later). I literally finished P5R early this morning (woo cryin' over P5R at 3am), and in watching this "unused" scene my first thought was "wait, I just saw this in game," and I've been playing super spoiler free and this was my first play through. The scene actually caught me off guard because I wasn't expecting a voiced dialog scene. He also leveled up and got 20 HP so it HAD to be 1/23 based on the drink selection that night. I took him on two additional dates after (1/26 and 1/27) to see if I'd get another voiced scene, but didn't.

I'm of a mind with Akechi concerning Maruki's actualization. Even if he's not as malevolent as Shido or Yaldabaoth, what he's doing isn't much different from them: dictating how people live their lives simply because the world "chose" him to do it. What worth is there living in a world like that, even if it works out in your favor? I'd also say none. To use myself as an anecdote, standing up to Maruki was a bit personal for me because in my first run of the game, I actually considered accepting the god of control's offer to alter the world at the cost of humanity's autonomy. I was weak then, so I couldn't take the easy way out again. Plus, his actualization of Sumire made things personal too (Beyond the fact I've romanced her in all my Royal playthroughs). Seeing her go berserk really cemented in my mind what Maruki wants won't really help anyone. Because of it, Sumire's pain was left to fester inside of her for nearly a year when it could've actually been healed until it boiled over with her trying to kill me. Some of this may be hard to rationalize, but to quote Akechi, "it's how I feel, so there's nothing I can do about it."

@@Allthingsasian Considering how Royal true ending is a cliffhanger and Scramble display/suggest more researchers attempting to pry into/gain access to the cognition/Shadow Worlds, it might take a while before the next mainline enters. Scramble events kind of matches Maruki's actions, considering Royal true final arc is the basis of EMMA storyline. It also tackles the theme of escapism, in a similar manner as Surime's denial and granting wishes/desires at a cost of being brainwashed. It also matches Jose's statements of more beings watching humankind and "they" can't leave humans be. Jose might be refering to the past generations battles (also post trails like the Answer, Arena and LMB Fest), including future battles that the Phantom Thieves can't avoid, like the EMMA case, plus the Velvet assistants are viable even in post trails. It can be assumed that Jose is a resident of the Velvet Room, but assigned with a different task in the main campaign until the next P5 story, which is when he plays a major role. Plus Atlus also prepard more P5 domains beforehand. They might bound to be used, possibly announce next year 25th anniversary. I can see them revealing a new girl in the next story, with her Arcana being Charity to complete the theological virtues. It's seem to be a pattern in the neo-era stories that another Wild Card is found by Igor after the main campaign within the same generation; Aigis due to inheritance and Abyss of Time, Sho accept after Minazuki personality left him. It can be assumed the same thing might happen, but occur during the period of the Phantom Thieves investigation on EMMA, like a midquel; occurs at the same time but different story and perspective, which explains his absence though Lavenza hinted he's still present. Possibly Akechi's trail under the real Igor will be similar to Aigis, since both have many similarities; being the deteragonists of their respective generations.

I don't hate this or anything, but I'm pretty glad it goes unused. It feels a little underwhelming for his awakening honestly, the one used in the real game feels much more fitting to me. It shows that even if he hasn't become "a good guy", he is true to his ideals even if it costs him his own life. He isn't a backstabbing coward, and he isn't evil for the sake of being evil; his evilness developed as a result of his mistreatment and abuse during his upbringing, it can seem his character is too cartoonishly evil when he's telling you things like "Friends? Don't patronise me with that bullshit!", but when you really stop and think about it and realise that the only people who ever treated him well were strangers that didn't even know the real him it makes sense. The idea of friends probably does sound like bullshit if you've been mistreat by everyone who truly knows you, and the only people who treat you well only do so because of the shallow and insincerely polite facade you put up, to Akechi the idea of love or friendship is just people trying to make themselves look good so they can say they're better than him. When you look at it like that, his utter hatred for Joker makes so much sense, as he is the epitamy of that idea to Akechi.

this one is good but I feel like it's far less like a struggle like in this version Akechi was suppose to have left Shido's palace alive that Akechi's struggle would have been one of only manipulation instead of one of I WANT MY FREE WILL NO MATTER WHAT and boy is one far more powerful than the other because one brought me to fuckin tears the other is a touching moment but nothing more

I like this, but the scene that was ended up being used it's much better honestly, it kinda lose impact some sense once you see the post credit scene, but other than that, I stay with the one that was used for his 3rd awakening.

I think the dialogue here is great and made me understand how Joker and Akechi had similar motivations but Akechi was more desperate to get Shido. But I think the scene they put in the official game would work better cuz if this is at the jazz club, I’m not sure how it would would happen since it happening out of the blue would be odd.
