I agree. If I was looking to buy, what they had done is exactly what I'd want to see: more of the house and very little furnishings. The kitchen is the only drawback and it's a big one. All the money should have gone into the kitchen.

Hate the dining room .. it is totally wrong for that house

I like the charm of "cup" drawer pulls, but not when they're put on swinging doors -- it's wrongness.

The only thing I see as a bad choice in the makeover was putting library pulls sideways on the kitchen cabinets. They aren’t meant to go sideways and look bizarre.

I would have left the original dining room table and light fixture there and just dressed it up the table with place settings, flowers, etc to make it cozy. The new ultra-modern one so does not go with that style of house and sticks out like a sore thumb.

I agree. I would also have used both top and bottom of the hutch. That is what the original cabinets would have been, and some show pieces of china would have warmed the space beautifully.

@@jdee4956 I really liked it, especially in the house. The new one is pretty but more generic and common, and I appreciate things that don’t look like everyone else’s that came from a big box store.

I appreciate that, as painting, staging, etc. progresses, Sophie both states and shows clearly why it isn't enough 2 have a pleasant room color.. The necessity of having flow, as well as a charming visible appeal will help 2 'carry the day' when staging 2 sell! Even on such a relatively small budget, Sophie & team managed 2 do just that. Really fun 2 see!! 🙂 Also, she never said the room color was dull, only that the house lacked warmth & charm, and--she hit the nail on the head!

What they have done to the dining room (placing a glass top modern table matching nothing in this house) and the kitchen ( back splash in grey and cheap looking coutertops) is NOT money well spent...

The $4,400 renovation money should have all been used in the kitchen. That "upgrade" was cheap. Kitchens sell homes, not pricey metallic drapes in living rooms!

I agree except the dining room and bedroom desperately needed those new modern light fixtures.. as for the kitchen, new good hard surface counter tops plus the new backsplash is all it really needed... or all that could be done without ripping everything out... if they had the money, I would have taken out the wall between the sunroom and kitchen and expanded the kitchen all along the back wall..

I agree. Also, the kitchen was not helped by an awkward layout. Layout is very important in a house, particularly in the kitchen & bathroom. If the kitchen is pokey, it can be a deal breaker.

An effective change, but I still think the big, darkwood oriental cupboard was left too close to the angled fireplace for comfort. It detracted from the period feature and was a small but telling obstruction, throwing the balance out.

I agree. Way too tall for a loungeroom this tiny, and out of place next to the sunburst mirror. and what is it with these lounges in Canada, being so often placed with their back to the window and turned away from the view? so student-y! the lounge needs to be against the far wall where the cupboard is currently.

It’s funny she moans about how dull the colours are but Sophie normally uses them 🤣

I think there is a difference between giving a room A personality and giving it YOUR personality. The rooms were beyond bland.

So, their house sold for 24,000 less than asking price, plus 4,400 for the redesign. That doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

It wasn't selling at all and the people were paying two mortgages. They could have held out for a better price but the point was to unload the house, which they did.

I've always assumed that the programs comp the renovation costs for the use of their homes for the programs.

I didn't think the black and white tile in the kitchen went well with the backsplash and counter tops. It just seemed to clash to me

This couple did the team's work for them - and did it much better! Minimal staging, and admirable restraint. Well done, and could be a future template for the team.

The kitchen would be a total turn off. It is just plain lousy.

Lovely re-design! I am so glad their house sold for practically top dollar, and they can move closer to his daughter. Good for them!!!

LOL, I love sitting in a sun room and seeing the trash bins.

The dining room furniture in this one looks terrible in the finished look. That tale and chairs do not belong in that house and is not cohesive with the house or the cabinet.

What!? Wrong on every level. Metallic curtains? Seriously? Why? Who are the brains behind these design disasters?

I hate to see beds crammed against one wall or the headboard against the window. That means the rooms are two small.

Completely messed up the dining room. The original light fixture and table went well with the stained glass window. The room just needed a suitable wooden storage unit and a bit of colour - maybe in the upholstery in the seats of the chairs and some small knick-knacks on the table & storage unit. The 'modern' table looks hideous in that space.

Mandira Chatterjee I usually like what she does but pretty much agree with you on this dining room. While I did like the update of the light over the table, I would have left the tables and chairs. A bowl with red apples on the table would pick up the red in the window. The hutch painted a different color, with a bit of red decor on it would have worked.

The entire back of that house needs to have the dividing walls knocked down from three distinct places (scullery, cooking, sitting) into one large, well-laid-out kitchen running through the whole space.

How amazing never seen a house too decluttered yet?

I don't get it.....light neutral colors are what she preaches but when she finds it it's still not right. The living room, dining room and master bedroom just needed some decor. The little girl's room was perfect. How she can talk about period features in the presence of that hideous dining room table is an insult. And the coffee table......ugh.

That was the original back wall of the house. What I would do is knock down the wall between sun porch an the back end of the kitchen, then run a new kitchen across the back of the house. The flow of the existing kitchen is terrible and totally inadequate for cooking a large meal

Charming smaller dwelling! What I will never understand is why people trying to sell a house, leave obvious defects; i.e. the chipped tile in the kitchen. I for one would NOT purchase a home where that attention to detail had been overlooked. I'd be left to wonder what was hidden from view, since they did NOT care to fix what was in view.

Why worry about cosmetic things? As a buyer, it's an easy way to add value. Get proper inspections and you should not miss anything noncosmetic. Some trivial chips on the tile are not worth throwing away a whole house for. Perhaps they just didn't care about things that don't impede function.

I think you're exactly one of those buyers who wouldn't look at a perfectly stable yet a bit run down home twice but would be ready to throw hundreds of thousands at it once the walls are repainted. I think that's the wrong approach when buying a house. Don't look at all the cosmetic things too hard, because they can easily be fixed or changed. Of course buyers like houses that do not need any work at all, because it's convenient. I think it's smarter to look at the potential a house has and to put that extra bit of money and work into it to make it your home. Since most buyers seem to be concentrating on small flaws you could probably get a great house for decent money and invest a few thousands yourself rather than competing with other people for a picture perfect newly renovated house. I'm sure you could save tens of thousands that way.

That house is great! She has nothing to say... It's clean, it's not cluttered. Just what she wants????

The outdoor porch and the sun room were already goos and I love the renovations to make it all cohesive

This house just needed a few pictures to brighten up the walls. Awful kitchen.

Missed in the kitchen. What is that little wall all about? The floor is all wrong. Dining Table is way too sleek and square? Looks weird. Just sayin’... Even so, this show is fun to watch. 👍 Did it sell?

Beautiful home, the hardwood floors are fab.

I thought the house looked really good, as far as the kitchen I get they wanted to make more prep space, however it's just how the kitchen was designed, surprised sofie didn't like the light color paint, I don't care how the furniture is arranged as long as I can see the floors and walls and they are in good condition, no wild paint colors, I'd be good with that

I was particularly turned off by the black and white huge tiles in the kitchen...they simply did not work with the upgrades.

I love the master bedroom, kitchen, living room..well everything is a wow transformation

At least these two know their house is on the market...

I don't like the dining room or the kitchen before or after. The kitchen is a nightmare and needs to be completely torn out and reconfigured. The dining room looks just terrible even after

The kitchen is terrible. The floor tiles are too busy for that space and the cabinet handles were not installed correctly. The dining room table was the wrong size and dimension for the room. Horrible.

Just rewatched this and would like to add that the homeowners did a great job decluttering, (no one really cares about gratuitous candles or centrepieces.).They had also reduced the price which probably had more to do with the sale than the pathetic upgrades in the kitchen. They sold for 8% less than the asking price plus the cost of the renovations, what a shame.

$580 for drapes??? I don't think so

'This is a nice living room. All the furniture matches.' WHY THE HELL ARE BUYERS EVEN CARING ABOUT MATCHING FURNITURE??? They're buying the freaking house, not the furniture or decor! Are people actually that stupid? It's the BIGGEST FINANCIAL DECISION OF THEIR LIVES and they're making it based on whether the former owner's furniture matches and what's the color of the walls????

+Teddy 97 What you say makes perfectly good sense. Notwithstanding, several years ago I temporarily put my house up for sale and I kid you not, EVERY person who came to look at it was hounding me to buy my furniture and decor; even people who had no actual interest in buying the house itself.

Believe it or not I stage my house to the nines and was able to move into my other house. It's sold in one day to the first person. I had several backup offers. It was an older house with pink tile bathrooms . I did paint the kitchen cabinets and put in brand new stainless steel appliances. After years of watching HGTV I knew what to do. Even the realtor said the staging did it according to the new buyers. Go figure!

I watch lots of these and every time the real estate agent seems to know what is stopping the house from selling. I do wonder what they are doing for the fee is they cannot make the seller see how improvements can be made.

The furniture was all stuff they bought for the new house. She made it work best she could.

After watching three seasons' worth of episodes, I realize the houses are pretty much all alike, and they aren't sellable initially for any one of the same three reasons. Time to move on...

This was a really good makeover. My only surprise was that Sophie didn't change the flooring in the kitchen to make it look bigger. Those black and white tiles dominated the space.

Terrible coffee table. You should hVe left the light fixture in the dining room.

I think they misunderstood the need to de-personalize. It isn't the owners' personalities Sophie is talking about here. A house has its OWN character, and that's what buyers look for.

This is probably the only episode where I didn't like the makeover. The Master bedroom was nice but everything else was a let down. That coffee table with those curtains 🤢

This house was so pretty with the stained glass and all but tiny . Living room just big enough for a love seat . The dining room was also tiny. Kitchen was like two separate rooms. Maybe ok for just one person.

They have no pictures on the walls in their bedrooms or dining room, that is super dull.

Yuck--those outdated colors and tiles in the kitchen. I know this is from 2008 though. Things have certainly changed a lot during the past 10 years.

That’s a portable dishwasher. So you’re talking about installing a dishwasher which would involve doing plumbing work and removing a much needed cabinet. I’m sure that’s outside their budget. Plus, from the looks of the cabinet beside the sink, I don’t there there is the room for a dishwasher beside the sink. At least not a standard dishwasher.

This house had a certain deja vu sense, as if I'd seen it before--the cowhide rug in the living room and the armoires on either side of the bed, but with room for side tables. Maybe I need to take a break.

Literally just needs a kitchen reno. The new buyers are STILL going to have to rip all that "new" stuff and replace it with a better plan anyway!

Oh, honestly!! In nearly every episode of this stupid show, Sophie criticized the homeowners for having cluttered rooms, too much color, out of date decor, and/or many things that needed repair. This particular house was clean, neat, in excellent repair, and was painted all neutral colors, with the furniture being primarily simple and neutral---and she still managed to find fault with it! No wonder it went off the air more than a decade ago, and no more episodes have been filmed!!

Don’t understand that dining room at all. Might have fit better with the previous sitting room decor.

To me, the new kitchen looks more like a bathroom. I think it might be the lack of a view from a window (we don't see the window) and no textiles.

Interesting episode, I think their main focus was appealing to young professionals and young families which explains some of their decor choices. My only real gripe was the molding on the armoires, it made them bow from the wall too much for me.

The walls in this house were uneven.

I am surprised they left the Terminator checkerboard floor in the kitchen. And the new kitchen cabinets look underwhelming tbh. The bottom cabinets are just too narrow, there is not enough prep space. 800 bucks on metallic drapery and 425 dollars on a marble coffee table, that is more than 25% of the entire renovation budget, wtf. The Bedroom looks much better though

The kitchen is the problem no matter how you dress it. Knocking walls out would help. Actually rebuilding it would help.

Not a fan of black/white tiles ...but the couple have already redone a lot to sell ...you want it to appeal to everyone But this is bland !

The before was very well done. The kitchen needs the wall knocked down.

Prep space 10 ft from stove, should be adjacent or opposite stove. Fail. Dining table placed in wrong direction, rookie mistake.

She always uses the lime green everywhere... That's not a calming color choice.

The kitchen now just looks cheap, and the master bedroom looks like it's straight out of the '80s with those cabinets flanking the bed. All it needs to complete the '80s look is for the area above the bed, between the cabinets, to be fully mirrored. I don't like what Unsellables did at all. The '80s is one of my LEAST favorite design eras.

Pink master...not doing it.

I think the home has more character than the host. This series is difficult to watch.

The hutch is nice but color is horrible and tge table and chairs and lamp cheapens the look and isn't period appropriate. She spent way too many ch on drapery,. A fraction of that could have been spent. But it's not her $$. Bringing back so.efurniture, headboard a couple of night stands I think would have been cheaper. The built in look for the kitchen and bedroom wes nice. Buyers are so take, scripted.
