Unsellables | FULL Episode | Condo Competition

Soon-to-be empty nesters, Marco and Maria, are desperate to sell their four-bedroom home so they can travel and move closer to their grown-up kids...But after six weeks on the market, 18 viewings, and no offers, they’re not going anywhere. Billed as a condo alternative just minutes from downtown, the home is in a great location. And, although the owners insist there’s nothing wrong with it, the home’s overstuffed, cluttered interiors, religious art, fake flowers, ramshackle mudroom, and astro-turfed backyard are seriously turning buyers off.
In order to compete with the area’s modern luxury condos, Sofie comes up with plans for a radical overhaul. And while Anthony and the team declutter, reveal the home’s impeccable hardwood floors, and transform the mudroom and backyard, Sofie gives Marco and Maria a lesson in how to present a house for sale.

lol I'm a teacher and I used to teach pre-K. I spoke to the kids slowly, anyhow, because it helps their understanding and patience. We had a new student join the class, and her mother let me know (through a translator) that the little girl's first language was Spanish, and she'd only been hearing/speaking English for about 2 years (she was 5.) I was spending some one-on-one time with her on her first day during free time, helping her label her folders, etc. I was speaking even more slowly than I normally did with the kids until she put her little hand on her hip and said, "You speak TOO SLOW. You need to--" and then snapped her fingers twice. I couldn't help but laugh. lol I did start talking at my normal "kid speed," though!

I felt the husband's frustration of having to do all this work for the sale. He didn't realize that the way people sell houses had changed. He probably doesn't even watch these types of shows. I liked watching him embrace the change and go for it. I agree with other commentors - Sophie handled the family with great respect and understanding in terms of explaining new practices in real estate and the importance of removing personal items so that the potential buyers can really picture themselves and their things in the house. On top of everything, Anthony performed some real wonders here. Great Job Unsellables team!

Lovely couple, and charming home. There's many who don't realize they have to scale down to place emphasis on just the home. We all live in our private spaces so I don't critique one's private space for it's what it is-one's space, although it's a great idea to periodically de-clutter anyway. It would've been nicer to create a storage bench 'w cushions in the so called 'mud-room' though. And again, no mention of the bathrooms.

This is one of my favorite episodes! MY what a change. Which just shows that dated accessories, etc really make a huge difference. To be honest, the outside, which I loved, could have been achieved simply with loads of paint and removing those shingles, which anyone can do. Those plastic adirondac chairs are really cute, and I saw those at Kroger, so it's not like they are hard to find. Where they put the flowers, you could buy ready made benches, put flower boxes (ready made) on top, and paint it all without a contractor. I just LOVE this one. A keeper for sure! @@vaderladyl oh honey, I know what it’s called - I have 1980’s popcorn ceilings in my own home (thankfully soon to be gone with an upcoming renovation). That is not “popcorn” on that particular ceiling - it’s weaponry. The point is - a popcorn ceiling is a sure sign a home hasn’t been renovated in 40 years and it’s the first thing I’d get rid of if I was renovating in order to sell a home. I’m really surprised with all the other work they were doing on this house they did not remedy the ceiling. And, to your last point - yes, it is bad. Very, very bad.

You can call it what you want, it is still popcorn, so I also know what it is and had lived with it too. The fact that there is popcorn ceiling might mean it is not renovated but doesn't mean it is necessarily in bad shape and NO, ,not everybody feels the need or care to remove it as that is only cosmetic, and not structural and NO, not everybody thinks it is a bad thing. They want you to believe that so they can charge you for it.

@@vaderladyl You do realize that back in the ‘80s when popcorn was at its heyday, the REASON it was used was not because it was aesthetically pleasing, it was used because it was a way of covering over shoddy ceiling drywall work. Bottom line, NOBODY would purposefully spray popcorn on a ceiling today, whether a new build or reno. The popcorn on the ceiling in this particular episode was especially horrific - looked like inch-long daggers on the ceiling. Most likely done by the homeowner himself - a lot of Europeans especially liked and used that look back in the day. You’re entirely welcome to your preference for popcorn ceilings. I think they suck, aesthetically speaking. To each their own.

With the weather in Toronto, some sort of vestibule or air lock is pretty much a necessity, and the original building did not have one. When the weather is bitter, -15 C or 0 F, you do not want gale force winds blowing through. In summer, the +33 C or nearly 100 F with 90% humidity, you don't want the hot air blowing in. The sunroom also gives a space for coats and boots to be removed before walking on the hardwood.

Because of the budgets that are set (ahead of time), there is only so much that the staging team can do in 2 or 3 days before the open house is scheduled. That's the point of the show. This isn't Property Brothers where even when the show was starting out ("Buying and Selling") the budgets were $10,000! I wouldn't spend that kind of money to "fix" my house in order to sell for its best dollar, even if I could afford it, LOL! The ceilings were awful, but the labor alone to remove the drywall - replacing it would be the easiest option - would be more than most buyers would be willing to pay. Covering over with new drywall would have lowered the ceilings too much, not an option. That isn't the typical popcorn finish of the 1980s-2000s that can be wet down and scraped off! That looked like actual plaster. It would cost a fortune to redo it unless it was torn out. Even during the time this show ran the cost of labor was going up, up and up, you can see the different just between the start of Season 1 costs for staging and the Season 2 costs for staging.

This is an old house, I'd say 1950s or earlier. My daughter had just such a house, the refrigerator had its own little alcove and the pantry did as well, with the back door in the middle. When they renovated, they moved the fridge back in the kitchen and extended the back of the house a few feet and created a deck.

The brown exterior colors and first floor finish material is problematic. That parquet floor is awful when you wear spike heels. Should have changed out the sofas and the reupholstered the dining chairs. The living room carpet is the wrong size, would have arranged the sofas in an L shape. The kitchen was the only truly nicely redone room, but decluttering did help.
