Unofficial Addendum to Gettin Junk Done BW 1356 Transfer Case Rebuild; Don’t Let the Lock Ring Win!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello and Welcome Back to the Channel!
This is an unofficial addendum to Joey ‪@GettinJunkDone‬ ‘s Borg Warner 1356
Transfer Case Rebuild Series.
First of all, if you haven’t checked out the You Tube Channel “Gettin’ Junk Done”, head over there now and have a look. I really wouldn’t have even known where to start if it weren’t for Joey’s BW-1356 tear down video, but it bummed me out that he got stuck on the planetary lock ring, and couldn’t get the case fully apart.
I decided to have a go at it, with the correct tools, and developed a technique to facility removal of these lock rings with a really sturdy pair of slightly modified lock ring pliers.
I also delve a little deeper and address a couple of the misconceptions that I have found in the forums when it comes to rebuilding these cases.
Again, this is just an addendum to Joey’s video series, with a little discussion on proper technique, and tools to get the job done. I hope some of you find it informative and useful. And let me know in the comments if you want to see me do a video on the case’s reassembly.
Thank You For Watching!
Cheers,
Casey

Thanks for this, I can confirm the needle bearing and bushing in the planetary carrier come out by tapping it out from the back. It was scary, but easier than I thought. They also push back in easily with a piece of wood.

Hey Bud! Thanks for the shoutout and the follow up video on my series that I made a while back! I really appreciate your input and it has forced me to look into buying the pliers that you recommended. You got a sub from me! Good work and keep it up. In the meantime, I've gone pretty crazy with the truck and have decided to take it all the way down to the frame. Hopefully you can check it out.

They make a straight narrow nose version of those pliers. If anyone is doing lots of gear work, they usually have both pliers.

Interesting and thanks for the tip. This specific part number was recommended on a document I found detailing this rebuild process, but maybe they got the part number wrong. Either way, I had waited quite a while to receive these, and I wasn’t going to let it stop me, so I modified them and got it done. If you can provide me the correct part number for the straight narrow version, I’ll update the video description…not that anybody reads the descriptions anyway. 😊

For anyone else doing this, my local oreiley’s had a cheap set of lock ring pliers made by performance tool that needed no modifications and got that difficult ring out on the very first attempt. Best $18 I’ve ever spent!

Model w88001. They look cheap but they work perfect for this job. I used them again today to take a good planetary out of a different 1356 for spare parts. Thanks for the tip about unloading the lock ring!

If I want to change my shift shaft seal without taking the case apart, will removing it cause internal parts to go “sproing”? Or can I change the seal out no problem? Mine is like in the video with a set screw. Thanks, Mike

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

That’s a good question. I’m pretty sure it would go sproing. And that quadrant wouldn’t have to move much, to make reassembly next to impossible. If you’re prepared to take it down anyway, it might be worth giving it a shot, since you wouldn’t have anything to lose. That said, if your seal is toast, chances are that pump arm has dug into the side of the case, and you’d benefit from tearing into it, regardless. Let me know what you find out! -Casey

Did it go sproing??? No… but. I removed the shaft and took the seal out. I put the shaft back in and wiggled it a little and it went home. Got a seal ( wrong size ) and removed the shaft again. When the seal wouldn’t fit I went to put the shaft back in and it wouldn’t go to home. Since the T-case was open a pushed the triangle wedge inward and the shaft went home. So it’s iffy at best.
