Fix a Sticking Noisy Spare Tire Carrier on the Full Size Bronco w/ Oilite Bronze from McMaster-Carr

Hello and Welcome Back to the Channel!
This week I’m tackling an issue all too familiar for #FullSizeBronco owners; the dreaded noisy tire carrier. And it’s actually quite easy to fix!
Below, find a list of parts used in this video.
Thank You For Watching!
Cheers,

***IMPORTANT UPDATE as I’ve had a few comments about these. 2 sets are required, but they are also used on the transfer case shift rod. Slight modification is necessary. Find the bushing in the kit with the correct ID, and then carve a little cross-shaped relief in the tapered end (eXacto knife or razor blade) to allow it “snap” into place. You may have to run a drill bit through after to ream the ID back into shape. Viewer also suggested that McMaster part number 6389K627 will also work with slight modification (removing about a 1/32 from the flange height), and may be a less expensive option.

    That's an awesome tip! I've never had a Bronco, but one of my first cars was an 87 GMC Jimmy with a rear tire carrier, and it had a similar issue. Granted I was 17 and had no idea how to fix it. Wish I knew about this all those years ago! Good work, keep em coming.

    @@crazycaseyscustoms Hi, I bought the shift bushings, but none of them fit. Did you turn them on a lathe? I ended up buying 6389K627 Nylon Sleeve Bearings from McMaster Carr. They worked after taking a 1/32 off the flange height.

    @@michaelwagstaff1870 that’s good to know about the McMaster option. I’m going to need to update my description to include more detail on the modification I did to the shifter bushings, because you’re the second person to comment you’ve had trouble. Basically, I found the bushing in the kit with the correct ID, and then I carved a little cross-shaped relief in the end that presses in to allow it sort of snap in place. Once in, I may or may not have ran a drill bit through it to regain my ID (I don’t remember if it squished or not).

    @@crazycaseyscustoms that makes sense. Yes, once you cut an x in them, they will press into the handle. I was making it too complex.

    I do that all the time, @@michaelwagstaff1870. To be fair, I had a tiny bit of my old bushings left, and they had a similar relief in them. That’s what guided me.

    Thanks Smackey! My folks had an early 90’s F-150 that I drove sometimes in highschool, so I’ve always had a soft spot for this body style of Ford, but the Bronco is SO cool! Hopefully this last round of work will have it reliably on the road so that we can finally enjoy it. 😊

    Hope you still check on comments......I need the striker bushing that is on the tailgate side that you machined out of aluminum. Could you elaborate on how you made that piece? Are special tools required?

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    Жыл бұрын

    I made it on the lathe out of a chunk of 6061 aluminum, and I don’t recall the outside diameter, but I still had a little bit of the original piece to take the measurements from. You could probably find a suitable aluminum (or maybe even bronze) spacer at Ace Hardware, or any other hardware store with a really good selection of bolts and fasteners, you’d probably have to stick a couple pieces together and cut/file them to length.

    When you machined the aluminum collar how did you remove the bolt through the center? Mine has a torque head on one side and a 15mm nut opposite. Is that 15mm nut welded or will it come off? Wanted to check with you before applying heat. Thanks

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    Honestly. I don’t remember. I think the nut *may* have been welded, and mine was a rusty mess. I would apply heat to the nut, and try to only turn the head. Worst case scenario, you end up welding a new nut back on…good luck!

    When you replaced the bushing that supports the tire rack (see at time stamp 2:48) how do you get that on there? I see that I can order a replacement from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard but I don't see how you get it on there as it is a closed cylinder and I don't see a way to get it on there. Any help would be much appreciated! And great video too!!!

    Hey, not sure if you do Amazon, but I have links in my description to every part used in this video, and I earn 3% on anything you buy through those links. 😊 And that bushing is only $5.99 shipped right now. It’s got a split in it, so it installs super easy. I want to say it has a little dog leg in the split that helps it stay together, but regardless, I had ZERO issues with that part. The other bushings are a little more fiddly, though, so please be forewarned.

    Great video. I have a question about the bushings in the handle. I purchased 14041 - Dorman Pedal and Shift Linkage Bushing Kit* and you said that it needed , slight modification necessary. I noticed the bushings didn't fit in the handle bolt holes. Did you drill out the handle to make them fit?

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    Жыл бұрын

    Gosh, honestly, I don’t remember what exactly I did. Probably so. I’d start by measuring the diameter of the bushing, and the handle hole. The bushings compress a little bit, but not a ton.

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    Жыл бұрын

    Actually, @campdisney, I slept on it, and remembered what I did. The minor diameter of the small bushing is correct, but I had to cut a little cross in the leading edge so that it would push through the hole. I don’t know if you had any of the stock bushing left when you disassembled your handle, BUT, I just tried to replicate that shape. Hope that helps!! 😊

    Casey, this solution does not work for the earlier Bronco 1980 to 1986. The pin is 5/8 and not metric. I am working on finding a bushing that will work, but the frame needs to be drilled to 3/4. It is the same solution as what you suggest, but I do not see anything on full size bronco forum or video suggesting a solution for the earlier carrier.

    YES! That’s my understanding, anyway, as I didn’t personally try it. The only reason I replaced my pins is because they got destroyed coming out. Everything I read online (which is where I got the idea) made no mention of replacing the pins at all…

    @@crazycaseyscustoms OK thanks I bought a 5/8” x 3” bolt at Home Depot but it is a tiny bit loose but the length is perfect with the nut. I wonder if McMaster Carr has a 3 inch bolt 16 mm. Thank you again for responding.

    3” = 75mm, @@dirtyeric2. I went with the 100mm because I wanted the extra shank length. Google “properly shanked bolt”, if you’re not familiar with the idea. Realistically, it probably doesn’t REALLY matter, but, that’s why I bought long and shortened,

    How do u get pins out? I took off retainer clip on bottom. Pound pin up?

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    Жыл бұрын

    Sometimes they come easy, but you gotta be careful because it’s really easy to mushroom the end that holds the clip. I used a balljoint press (basically a big C-clamp with a socket on the end) and heat, and that worked for one of my two that was stuck, but the other one was stuck so bad I had to drill it out. Hopefully yours will come fairly easy.

    If it isn’t too rusty, @@dirtyeric2, then yes, it should “tap” right up and out. If you have to “pound” on it, you might mushroom the tip, and that opens a can of worms. Keep an eye on the tip, as you “tap” the bottom of the pin with a hammer (preferably one with a soft face like brass). If you see it start to deform, better to try and use some kind of pressing tool.
