I'm just DIY, so not too experienced with soldering - I thought the heat mat I'd bought was a duff until you've just mentioned that here! I've only had to use it a couple of times, but wondered why it appeared to set on fire when it was meant to be heatproof!

I don't use a heat mat. I use some 4mm thick aluminium plates. They take the heat away by reflecting and acting as a heat sink slowly heating up evenly. You can slide one behind a pipe in a corner against another at 90° so it protects all round and a U shaped cutout on one edge can slide over a pipe for when you don't want heat going further along past the joint for pipes going through partitions etc. Works brilliantly and is indestructible.

I am a diy'er. Just soldered in the taps and toilet in the bathroom with Yorkshire fittings for the first time. Loved it and no leaks. Looking for the the Brasso now. Great tip. Thank you.

I found a gas meter installation recently with pipes joined using green flux only and nothing else! Some guy had forgotten to solder the pipes he had prepared and fluxed, amazing. But it was actually gas tight believe it or not.

never underestimate the power of flux,... I once forgot to solder a 54mm mains incomer that was at about 4 bar, and it didn't even weep...🤣 The brass munsin rings helped hold it together too...

Love watching your videos mate and has given me confidence in at least trying out the smaller plumbing jobs around the home. One thing if I can ask, what brand of soldering wire would you suggest using, I've tried looking through your Amazon store and can't seem to find any you recommend. Thanks anyways and take care 👍

Oi oi alright James, thanks for the content you provide I love it and it has helped me no end both in college and on little plumbing jobs I have done for people. Watching you previous video content I picked up the technique you shared for soldering vertical straight coupler joints, by the feeding solder in from the top and allowing it to run to the bottom which is banging my vertical joints look a lot better now. I am not being a Karen I am just curious and I wanted to know your thoughts about this, I am currently doing the Plumbing science module of my Lvl 2 course and noticed that solder in a fitting can cause additional turbulence, do you think using this technique on a end feed tee fitting could increase turbulence in the fitting due to the size of the X dimension it has compared to a straight coupler? A bit geeky I know ☺ but I am still learning so please don't take my query the wrong way, I've watched pretty much all of your content and love it.

Instead of a burn mat I use a piece of 6mm or 12mm cement board which I had kicking around in the garage

Mapp gas burns at like 2000c right? Most geat mats are rated for like 1200c some are even 600c so many plumbers are probably just ignoring that part of the equation

I remember being awful at soldering in school. Solder just used to fly all over the place. Never understood how the solder tracks around the pipe so easily. Is that becasue the flux controls where the solder runs

Me too. And i thought need to move and apply the solder around the pipe circumference for a good seal.

Does the flux 'pull' the solder around to the back of the pipe as well (near the wall) as it's difficult to reach otherwise.

Been a plumber for 40 years , everyone works differently, I don’t see the point of the coupling, if you had measured properly you would have only one fitting to solder , secondly I don’t care if there is runs , as long as it doesn’t leak that’s all I’m worried about. Too many narcissists , vloggers ruining the trade , how many plumbers these days would be able to carry a cast iron bath up a flight of stairs on their own? Not many , how many can wipe a copper joint ? It’s all plastic shit and press , anyone can be a plumber now it’s not a trade anymore.

Get a pro press and throw all that soldering stuff in the bin !

@@TheTW11 exactly at the end of the day press and push fit is based of the o ring sealing it. which after a while I would have thought anyways would wear down. I also think that I can get soldered fitting to look much neater than press to big and bulky personally but everything has it uses.

@@DavesKoiPond haha yea that's going to be fun another issue with them is that you cant take them off once there on. soldered you can unsweat them and go from there. Press fit you cant solder close to them so by the time I have found somewhere to join on I might as well renew the entire place 🤣
