Just had a quick Google (UK) of ferrule - first thing that comes up is an electrical wire crimp connector. Such a versatile word - it’s a rubber end to go on the bottom of a walking stick, binds end of rope together.. ….basically it’s used for fastening, joining, sealing or reinforcing! Sadly in the UK we call it an olive - and that’s the correct name, it’s not slang

B&Q. They did a cheap and effective olive cutter. You have a bar that drops into the pipe, attached to this is a cutter that is wound into the olive from the side. Great for operating on restricted space items where time is of the essence. I don't think that you had the nut 'tight' like when you do not want something to leak. If so, the olive will be sunk into the copper tube. Like a ring on a man who has become old and fat and can't get the ring off. When I find such, and need to remove the olive, then I cut the copper tube just in front of the olive and file smooth the end. Then I try to slide it off. Or, I cut it on both ends and peel the copper out from inside the harder brass. Like all things, you lose sometimes and win other times.

Next place some plain steel washers inside the stop end not too many as you want to screw the stop end into the nut, tighten nut and stop end together and you'll feel the olive being pulled off the pipe, when you run out of movement remove stopend and add more washers and repete till the olive pulls off. This method works in the same way as an olive puller ,at a fraction of the cost, and can be used in tight places provided you can get access for two wrenches . First example of removing an olive using the 'knock it with an adjustable spanner. Do that in a confined space - say an airing cupboard. Then spend the next half hour looking for the compression nut that has flown off under the floorboards ! I always shove a little peice of cloth or hook some solder wire into open end of the pipe. This cloth or solder wire will prevent the compression nut flying off into the abyss. Second were you used the hack saw. You cut through the olive and into the pipe ! Leaving a scar ! You need to cut trying to follow the shape of the pipe through the olive - ie in a curve so as not to cut all the way through the olive. Not easy to do but you get the hang of it. Then use a flat screwdrive to split open the olive.

The title of this clip should be " How to remove an olive with pipe clamped in a vise". In real world it is a wishful thinking, the pipe moves freely when any force is applied to the end of it, when one is replacing a faucet and having a garbage disposer + a T-junction for drain inside of a kitchen cabinet, a hacksaw option is a pure fantasy( not to mention the first method of knocking the olive out). I count myself lucky if I can fully disconnect the line, with connection not touched in 15 years and enough room to turn the spanner around without getting a black eye or a tooth knocked out.But then I'm not familiar with vanities/cabinets in England, there might enough space to use a vise.
