Unmasking the VAPING Crisis: 7NEWS SPOTLIGHT exposes growing addiction among youth

Under the light of a grave health concern plaguing Australia’s youth, 7NEWS Spotlight brings a comprehensive investigation into vaping’s dark side. This six-month long, nationwide study reveals the deeply concerning strategy geared towards making children addicted to nicotine - some alarmingly as young as five. Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart unmasks the harrowing effects vaping is imposing on our younger generation and the secretive information manufacturers intend to keep hidden about the harmful substances our children are inhaling.
Engaging in undercover exploration among the fresh victims of big tobacco, 7NEWS Spotlight navigates through Canberra’s political maze and converses with leading medical experts. The experts elucidate the horrifying ramifications of this ostensibly harmless habit. The accumulated evidence will indeed shock you.

my dad got lung cancer 15 years after he quit smoking. He didn't vape or anything else. Hypocritical to make vaping illegal without making cigarettes illegal. Importing vape product from China is crazy. They need to regulate/police the manufacturing process and allow Adults to choose for themselves. And shutdown anyone found supplying children.

Just bcs one bad thing is legal, dosen't mean we have to allow new also bad things just bcs.. In that case alcohol should be banned and also every type of medication.. We have to adjust to new info when we get it.. we have to go with science & evidence, not feelings & what may seem "hypocritical". You can thank the US & their fully legal lobbyism for cigarettes still being legal..

I'm 56 this year and started smoking when I was twelve as all my friends did. I tried everything over the years to quit but always ended up smoking again and it was typically thirty and up to fifty per day. I tried vaping five years ago and it's overly complex and didn't continue. Six months later after a ton of research I tried again and weaned myself off cigarettes over 30 days. I planned to wait 3 days before a purchased another pack of cigarettes and just never got around to it. Within three months my cough had gone, and my breathing had cleared up. I purchased my juice with added nicotine from either the USA, NZ or the UK and was through Australian sites. These same sites gave me updates on all the changes in the laws as they changed. I use a proper Mod and haven't ever tried and disposable device as I consider it wasteful. I now buy all the raw ingredients and mix my own tobacco flavor and I struggle to understand the point of all the fruity flavors. For two years now I have had the government required prescription to do this which is supported by my doctor. I have been slowly reducing the nicotine in my juice and then it will be time to stop completely. I am an advicate for vaping as it works for me. Do I encourage kids to vape is the same as do I encourage kids to smoke cigaretts. NO NO NO. Taking up smoking all those years ago was the single dumbest thing I've ever done. There is a lot of negative press like this one that wants to ban it completely but isn't the answer. There is already a thriving black market in Australia, and around the world, but these are only in countries that impose bans. Legalize but regulate is the only way forward.

Thank you. The answer is easy. If you smoke change to vape. If you don't smoke don't ever vape. So police the laws to get rid of illegal imports and sales to minors. Then ensure smokers can get access to vapes.

I’m in my early 60’s and a smoker since 13 years old. Since the federal government started to hike up the price by increment to the present $32 per 20 pack of cigarettes, I noticed that vapes were being heavily advertised and endorsed as a means to quit smoking. And I thought, what perfect timing..🤨 Someone developed a diabolical idea into being, and is reaping wealth off the backs of those who fell for their profoundly deceptive and deceitful advertising campaigns (even children were targeted in those campaigns). And I remember seeing and hearing ads on TV, radio, at the cinemas, huge posters everywhere, everywhere we looked, for cigarettes when I was younger… And it’s clearly the *same* campaign. (History repeating itself)😔

But vaping is over 90% less harmful than regular cigarettes. In the States we have no flavors (except some states have menthol). That’s too bad for all of smokers trying to stop. I agree vaping certainly isn’t good for you, however, there’s nothing worse than smoking. Vaping is not for children, or any non smoker for that matter. But for the people that have been smoking cigarettes for 15-20 years like myself, vaping is a life saver and a far safer alternative. Vaping saw me quit smoking overnight after 15 years of smoking. Banning vaping products is only making it more difficult for the people who actually need it. I have a prescription for vape products but I buy my own imported products because the prescribed vapes and juices from the pharmacy are extremely expensive and low quality devices. A huge part of why I started vaping in the first place was to reduce costs, so to see vape products at pharmacies costing just as much per week as cigarettes, it’s a no go for me. You’re also limited to a single brand with script vapes. Typical government bureaucracy. This isn’t about the health affects of vaping, it’s about the billions of dollars in tax revenue that the government is missing out on after they discovered vaping has become a multi trillion dollar industry while simultaneously reducing the profits of big tobacco as people switch over, the government wants their slice of the pie and big tobacco is lobbying behind them.

I managed to quit smoking thanks to vaping. You've got to actively work at it though. I slowly reduced the nicotine content over 6 months or so. When I got to zero it seemed worthless so I stopped. It took planning (mixing liquids to get lower decent but increasingly lower doses of nicotine etc). You also have to want to stop. Without vaping I believe I would never have stopped smoking.

Surely it's all the other substances in vapes that do the damage - nicotine is extremely addictive of course; but it's not as harmful as all the other chemicals in either cigarettes or vapes that are inhaled into the lungs. If vapes contained nothing but nicotine, they'd be less dangerous for sure.

I have smoked and drank beer on and off for most of my life and quit again two months ago and will never do either for the rest of my life which I hope for goodness sake is a long one being 66 at present. As far as being addicted to something yes I AM, food for nutrients and vitamins, air for oxygen, clothes to not embarrass anyone, shelter to keep me out of the rain, heat, etc... water to bless my body that is made mostly of it and it needs to replenish it and that's about it. If you are addicted to anything that is bad for continuing your life it is not that hard to stop it unless it is Heroin or Alcohol because it is possible to die from alcohol abuse if you are a very heavy drinker then it might be good to do it in a hospital. Other than that good old-fashioned willpower that everyone has can work to stop anything. I did it two months ago on beer and cigarettes so anyone who is a human who can read my words can unless you insane or are blind and can't read this. Ha ha

If they weren't vaping they'd be smoking cigarettes. My generation smoked cigarettes as kids, in fact I started at 12 years old. We were the generation that caused stores to put hard plastic up between the customer and cigarettes, or to lock them up, bc we were always stealing whatever packs of smokes we could get our hands on, EASILY! We're also the generation that caused laws to change, where if you were caught smoking under age 18, then you'd get fined. Even if you had a cigarette butt on you, not even smoking it, you'd get a ticket. Cigarettes will eventually be a thing of the past now that the younger generation chooses vaping over smoking I truly believe that. I quit smoking by vaping, in fact, I have no desire to quit either, but ppl keep sticking their nose where it doesn't belong, making it difficult for ADULTS to make their own choices! Vaping is over regulated now and they've made it harder for even adults to buy what we want. They also took away certain flavors of JUUL, while leaving others alone, obviously picking on that brand. Sorry the kids are buying this stuff, but they'd just replace it with something else if someone succeeded at getting vape products banned!

How pathetic is this report? After 35 minutes we have two cases of people dying from vaping. I feel sorry for the families of these people and wish them all the best but I have a comments about what the report omitted: 1. What was in those vapes which caused these deaths? Was it only a flavour, Vegetable Glycerine and Propylene Glycol or did it have dangerous additives like Diacetyl which is known to cause popcorn lung? By the way Diacetyl was used in flavoured popcorn as a flavour enhancer and workers in those factories were getting popcorn lung and they banned it from being used before Vaping! 2. How much did they vape on a daily basis? Was it 300 puffs a day or more? Surely the frequency would have some impact! 3. They estimate over a million people vape but yet don’t tell us ever since it became mainstream hospital admissions to treat vaping related illnesses has dramatically increased in comparison to smoking! 4. No mention of Cancer rates in Vapers compared to Smokers! 5. No mention of Vaping being over 20 years old with patents first filed in 1930 to 2003 when it was successfully fully developed by a Chinese Chemist. They did not mention that no clinical trial in all of that time has been conducted to assess the impacts of groups of people who we could compare between Smokers, Vapers and the control group of non-smoker/vaper - no proof of long term side effects! 6. Propylene Glycol is commonly used in smoke machines, ventolin and other sprayable aerosols in your mouth - no harm from this chemical! 7. This hate toward nicotine is unfounded, it does not cause cancer and is a therapeutic at low dose concentrations relieving stress! This whole thing is a joke, Butler is going to compound this problem by forcing people like me who want the flavours, have prescriptions and want to order their own liquids by the personal importation scheme to enjoy recreationally! Pushing good people to the unregulated black market which will just go further underground like illegal drugs! An by the way, the kids were not vaping as much when we could import eliquids freely but after the prescription model from Greg Hunt the illegal devices and kids using it exploded! If you want to reduce this problem, you have to treat it like tobacco, sold under licence, produced to high quality standards and not sold to under 18’s! It won’t eliminate all the kids doing it but they are experimenting and often stop! The gateway drug effect is a myth, I don’t understand how people can move on from fruity flavoured vaping to disgusting flavoured smoking an then there is the price difference between the two! Lastly Mark Butler’s health advisers have said “the Media have over exaggerated the health effects of Vaping” as just one example - he knows he will not win this! He knows that he will spend money and the problem will not go away! An what is the worst, he won’t admit he is wrong and actually start regulating for money, new industries with jobs and export opportunities overseas to NZ, UK & Canada to name a few countries! I can’t wait for Butler to be humiliated by his failure!

I would however be interested in an interview that will have a doctor declaring that they state their reputation on the line with claims that they personally witnessed someone dying from vaping. To my knowledge nobody has died from vaping. There was a time that some people got very sick and one did die from black market thc cartridges. Dr. Peters gave a stern warning of what could happen, but he did not even say he personally knew of cases of death from vaping. I would be extremely interested in seeing the autopsy report of Mr. Hansen. If there is an actual claim that the cause of death was mealy vaping I would be so curious to see that for sure. That would be the first documented death from vaping I have ever seen.

As for what is in bottles of eliquid (not salt nic) this is what is in them. 4 Ingredients. Not 7000 chemicals as in cigarettes. Vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) comprise the vast majority of what’s in any bottle of vape juice and make up about 90 percent - or even more in some cases - of the vapor you inhale and exhale. We cover VG and PG extensively elsewhere in this blog, but we’ll also provide some quick information here in case you’re short on time. So, what is vegetable glycerin? It’s an extremely useful product of the soapmaking industry. Soap, as you may know, comes from fat. The fat can be animal or vegetable in origin. We use the term “vegetable glycerin” in the vaping industry to clarify the fact that animal-based glycerin isn’t used for vape juice. Soap is created in a chemical process called saponification, which is what happens when you add lye to fat. You get two products as a result of that process, and those products are soap and glycerin. Glycerin is an effective moisturizer for the skin, so it’s sometimes added back in to create a mild soap that doesn’t dry the skin. In everyday consumer products, glycerin is used to: Add moisturizing properties to soaps, lotions, haircare products and cosmetics. Prevent shelf-stable foods from drying out or spoiling due to microbial growth. Add sweetness to low-sugar foods and snacks. Almost all vape juice contains both VG and PG. The two liquids differ in their properties, though, and that’s why e-liquid makers put the VG/PG ratios of their products on the bottles. In an e-liquid with a higher VG/PG ratio, the properties of VG will be more evident. The properties of PG will be more evident in an e-liquid with a lower VG/PG ratio. A VG/PG ratio of 70/30, for instance, indicates that the e-liquid’s base is 70-percent VG and 30-percent PG. An e-liquid with a higher VG/PG ratio will have these properties: It’ll generate bigger vapor clouds and will have a fuller mouth feel because VG is much thicker than PG. It’ll have a sweeter overall flavor because the flavor of VG is somewhat sweet. It’ll provide a smoother vaping experience because VG is very low in throat hit. Propylene Glycol Propylene glycol is a liquid that’s synthesized in laboratories from a variety of natural and artificial base compounds. Some of the compounds that can be used for the creation of PG include corn, soy, petroleum and even glycerin. PG has a variety of both human and industrial uses. Since petroleum-derived PG isn’t considered food grade, it’s used for industrial purposes rather than for consumable products like vape juice. In everyday consumer products, propylene glycol is used to: Carry flavors and medicines because it is an effective solvent. Enhance the effectiveness of products such as deodorants and air fresheners because it kills many types of microbes. Provide emulsifying properties in liquid products such as lotions, cosmetics, haircare products, liquid medications and some consumable products such as drink mixes. For a very small percentage of the population, the VG/PG ratio of vape juice is extremely important because those people are allergic to PG. We have to note here that a PG allergy is most likely something that you don’t need to worry about because you probably come into contact with PG every day when you use your lotion, deodorant and shampoo. If you had a PG allergy, you'd probably already know. If those products give you itchy hives, though, the potential for a PG allergy is something that you might want to consider. People who are allergic or sensitive to PG generally prefer to buy vape juice made with 100-percent vegetable glycerin. An e-liquid with a lower VG/PG ratio will have these properties: It’ll generate smaller vapor clouds and will offer more consistent performance with the smallest vaping devices because PG is much thinner than VG. It’ll have a clearer and more defined flavor because PG isn’t sweet and doesn’t have a noticeable flavor of its own. That’s why PG is commonly used as a flavor carrier. It’ll have a stronger throat hit because PG vapor produces a slightly scratchy sensation in the throat. Food-Grade Natural and Artificial Flavors The flavor of a vape juice is incredibly important - it’s the primary reason why you like an e-liquid or not. Vape juice makers work unbelievably hard to develop flavor profiles that will resonate with the vaping community, and the flavor profile of a given e-liquid may come from as many as a dozen or more individual flavoring compounds. Not to sell to kids but because adults like flavors.

None of it is just water vapor. t's all PG/VG, (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine) in different ratios with other ingredients mixed in - color, flavor, nicotine, water. These things can cause lipoid pneumonia or EVALI in some users. Why it happens to some & not others is not known. Then you have the shady ones with Vitamin E acetate, though that was mostly the cannabis ones from China. These lipids (VG) are safe when swallowed but when inhaled into the lungs you can get lipoid pneumonia as stated already. It's akin to putting vegetable oil in your mouth & sucking it down the wrong pipe accidentally.

Moving back to the tried and trusted Nicorette Inhalator where you don't inhale/exhale any smoke/vapour. Someone in the comments said smoking is a weak state of mind and I have to agree. The habit is 100% psychological. I know this because after using the Nicorette Inhalator for 2 weeks when I was hit with a crave all I had to do was touch the thing sitting in my pocket without using it and I felt at ease. Either way, whatever you use, none of it is any good. My advice. Do not start any product in the first place. Your lungs and wallet will thank you.

Alcohol is an addictive, carcinogenic, hepatotoxic, neurotoxic- omnitoxic chemical added to products to get people hooked. Lol at the statistics, most of the sales of alcohol are to binge drinkers and alcoholics and children get a hold of alcohol frequently and many young people end up with alcohol poisoning. Why is that not a great concern when they think they are just drinking a fruity, pleasant, stingy drink!
